Pokemon Battle! Yuuma vs Joy!
Date of Scene: 25 August 2014
Location: Pokemon Islands - Hoenn
Synopsis: Yuuma and Nurse Joy have a Pokemon battle. Voltorb vs. Magikarp!
Cast of Characters: 21, 553

Nurse Joy (553) has posed:
Welcome to the World of Pokemon!

Nurse Joy is, currently, at the beach of Slateport City. She is in her nurse outfit, which is actually somewhat unusual for when she's at the beach. This particular Nurse Joy tends to wear a diving suit at the beach, because she's usually going from island to island in the ocean, looking for injured wild Pokemon to help.

Today, though, she just got of work at a shift at the Pacifidlog Pokemon Center, and decided to come over here, hence her still in her work clothes. She's sort of just lounging by the beach, at the moment, on a nice little bench.

Earlier, though, she put out a little call for Pokemon Trainers. It's been some time since she has had an actual Pokemon Battle, so she figures, she may as well have one.

She smiles, looking at the kids playing on the beach, and looking at the various water Pokemon playing with them.

She sure hopes someone takes up the battle offer, though.

Yuuma Nakano (21) has posed:
Battle on the beach, eh? Well, Yuuma's not exactly a Water-type trainer. And he doesn't like open water all that much. Kind of comes with the territory of being electrokinetic /and/ gravitating towards Electric types. But it occurs to him that he's never really fought with his Pokemon in a legitimate Pokemon battle. He generally tended to fight with Juru and Denka as extensions of himself.

To that end, he heads on down to that beach! He's forgone his hoodie and cap this time, and his pink hair is obvious. He wears knee-length shorts and sandals instead of long pants and sneakers. He is, however, still carrying his backpack. His Pokemon are actually not in Pokeballs; there is a Joltik clinging to his shirt and a Voltorb in nestled in the crook of one arm.

He stops, looking around. There are a lot of people on the beach today! So where is the one who wanted to battle? The Joltik speaks up, "<Sounded like Nurse Joy! So look for one!>" The pink-haired young man nods, looking around the beach for a Nurse Joy.

Nurse Joy (553) has posed:
As Yuuma comes along, Nurse Joy is actually a little surprised. It's not often that people walk around with two Pokemon out and about. Especially Voltorb. Though Voltorb aren't as dangerous as their reputation lend people to believe, it's still not a Pokemon most people would keep out of its ball.

But she smiles, hearing the Joltik speak up. Yeah, the reputation of Nurse Joy spreads far and wide. She stands up from her bench, smiling, and walking along. Unlike most Nurse Joy, she sort of seems a lot more casual. Her arms loosely hanging at the side, instead of held in front of her as most of them would. She still has the normal pleasant demeanor, though. A smile as her face, as (most) Nurse Joys usually have.

"Excuse me, but you're looking for Nurse Joy? Were you the one who decided to respond for my request for a battle?"

She assumes as such from what she heard, but it is good to ask. They could be looking for a different Nurse Joy, after all.

Yuuma Nakano (21) has posed:
Yyyyyeah. That Voltorb is probably making people give him a wide berth there on the beach. And probably getting him some weird looks! But he doesn't pay them much mind. Or at least, that's what he's trying to make himself believe. In actuality he's hunkering down and trying to disappear. Nonetheless, the Joltik's words give him something to concentrate on! Which may have been the idea.

Yuuma almost jumps as he hears Joy speak. But he turns to look at her, pulling a flat, tablet computer out of his backpack. <<That's right,>> he confirms. Though it's not him who speaks, it's the tablet. The pink-haired kid's lips don't move. The voice is an electronic-sounding one, very much artificial. In fact it's a common voice for assisted communication devices. Sometimes called 'Perfect Paul'. <<My name is Yuuma.>>

Nurse Joy (553) has posed:
As a Nurse, Joy is honestly no stranger to encountering people with special needs. She smiles, and simply acts as she would to anyone else. She gives a little bit of a nod, as she considers him.

"It's nice to meet you, Yuuma. My name is Joy, and I'm a Pokemon Nurse. And, well... I'm glad to be battling you. You're from the Syndicate as well, I believe? It's good to meet a fellow member of the organization."

     She smiles wider.

"I think... How about either a one on one, or two on two, Pokemon battle. Would that work for you?"

Yuuma Nakano (21) has posed:
Yuuma smiles in greeting. <<Pleased to meet you,>> he offers through his tablet, bowing politely. Notably, he's not actually typing anything. It's like the tablet just responds. Looking to the Joltik, <<This is Juru.>> And then to the Voltorb. <<And Denka.>>

"<Hiii!>" Juru chirps with a happy wave of one forefoot. Denka adds, "<A pleasure, Nurse Joy.>" One benefit to being named the same as the rest of your famous family. Everyone knows your name!

Though the suggestion has Yuuma giving a thoughtful look. <<I'm not sure which would be better. I've never fought with them normally. Usually we all sort of, I don't know, team up for one attack. I'll send electricity Denka produces down strands of webbing Juru spins.>>

Nurse Joy (553) has posed:
Nurse Joy bows a bit, only after Yuuma does. She sometimes forgets her manners. She simply doesn't think about it. She smiles at Juru and Denka, rather cheerfuly.

"It's nice to meet both of you too, Juru, Denka."

Nurse Joy ponders a bit, though. She had heard of people who use Pokemon as tools for their own fighting skills. It's not super common, though she even has some relatives who do it, she thinks. But it does give her a bit of an edge, in a fair battle.

"...Hrm. If it's your first battle with just Pokemon fighting Pokemon, how about this? One on one. Your strongest Pokemon, versus mine. Would that work for you?"

She seems rather excited for this idea. It should work out pretty well. Help teach a newbie the ropes.

Yuuma Nakano (21) has posed:
Yuuma nods. <<I've watched others battle before, just never joined.>> So he knows a little about how Pokemon battles work, it seems. Just not a whole lot.

In the meantime, the two Pokemon are deciding who's going to go up against Joy. "<Oooh! Match you for it!>" Juru says happily. He stretches out a forefoot at Denka. "<Jan-ken-pon?>"

Denka sends Juru a flat stare. "<...I have no hands, genius.>"

Juru pauses, lowers his forefoot. "<...Oh. Right. I knew that. Just... wanted to see if you were paying attention. Yeah.>"

Yuuma shakes his head. <<Juru, you're still a baby yet, and haven't really battled all that much. Denka? Will you go?>>

Denka rocks forward, as if nodding. "<I will.>"

Nurse Joy (553) has posed:
Nurse Joy nods, "Yes, fighting with baby Pokemon isn't really quite the best idea. So, Denka, I'll be fighting you, then? Well... In that case..."

And suddenly, Nurse Joy goes into action. The people on the beach have already somewhat backed up. The signs of a Pokemon Battle about to occur are very obvious, usually. The eyes of two trainers, meeting. And Nurse Joy smiles, looking straight into Yuuma's eyes.

She suddenly bursts backwards, sort of sliding back across the sand, to put some distance between the two of them. Sand is flying along her path. It's actually fairly amazing how quick she can be. She reaches into a pocket of her apron, grabbing out a Pokeball, and throwing it casually up in the air.

     "MAGIKARP! I choose you!"

The ball opens, and a Magikarp flops down onto the sand.

And by flop, I mean 'create a small crater'. For this is the Pacifidlog Nurse Joy's strongest Pokemon, and in fact, her starter Pokemon.

And this Magikarp is the size of a car.

Nurse Joy smiles, waiting for Denka to move forward.

Yuuma Nakano (21) has posed:
Yuuma knows the eye contact rule! Shown when he does just that, meeting Joy's gaze. That takes a /lot/ of courage for him to do, making eye contact with anybody is scary for him. But then suddenly there is a sound similar to a fish the size of a car dropping onto the beach. Which, coincidentally, is exactly what it is, Yuuma sees. It's a positiviely MASSIVE Magikarp.

Yuuma, Juru, and Denka all three are wide-eyed and rather nonplussed. There's a long moment of silence before Denka finally hops off of Yuuma's arm. "<...If I do not come back, send a pack of Double-A batteries after me.>" Yuuma snickers.

Nurse Joy (553) has posed:
Joy points forward, smiling. Well, Denka is a /bit/ freaked out, but that's not surprising. Even she is aware that this is quite an unusual Magikarp. They usually don't get anywhere near this big. Still, it always gives her the element of surprise in some way.

She points forward, quite dramatically. There is a /small/ crowd kind of watching. Not that many, but still a number.

"Alright, Magikarp. We can do this! Use Tackle!"

The Magikarp is not the most agile on the land, but still, for its species, it is surprisingly competent. It flings its body forward, moving to slam itself into Denka's body. It takes a couple of floppy jumps to get close enough to even hit, but still, when it does move forward? It packs a punch like a car.

"Magikarp!" <Don't think you've won just because you're an electric type!>

Joy smiles, rather relaxed looking, despite actually being rather tense and excited right now.

"Don't worry, my Magikarp knows his own strength. You'll be alright after this."

Yuuma Nakano (21) has posed:
Yuuma nods to Joy's words. He actually looks pretty nervous. Though that's not much of a change, he always looks nervous to some degree. As for Denka, it's a round thing, and doesn't have much in the way of mobility itself unless it rolls around. The tackle slams into it and sends it rolling back with a dizzy look for a moment. Then it shakes itself and recovers.

The young man directs Denka as the Voltorb recovers, <<Be careful. Don't underestimate him, but don't overdo it. Return fire-- use Tackle.>> Denka rolls in a circle to gain momentum and then tries to keep that momentum going as it aims itself at the Magikarp.

Nurse Joy (553) has posed:
The Voltorb slams into the Magikarp. With the size of the thing, it doesn't get pushed all that far by the tackle. A dent appears in its side, though, and it becomes slightly bruised due to the tackle.

"Good job enduring it, Magikarp! Now, use Bounce!"

The Magikarp flops up a bit. Then again. And finally, it bounces up incredibly high, until it is far in the air.

It then plummets through the air, towards the Voltorb. A dark shadow somewhat shows where it is going to fall to.

Yuuma Nakano (21) has posed:
There's rather too much fish for Denka to roll completely out of the massive Magikarp's way. To its credit, it does try, though. Even if it doesn't quite work. Yuuma winces a bit, but Denka manages to get itself out from under the large Water type's body. Even if it does look a little flatter. Or that could be Denka's imagination.

<<Get some space, Denka!>> Yuuma calls out. <<Use Sonic Boom.>> Once the Voltorb can right itself again, it produces a wave of sound that it aims in the Magikarp's direction.

Nurse Joy (553) has posed:
The Sonic Boom comes in, and strikes the Magikarp again. Already, the thing is looking a little bit beaten up. Good thing it seems /really/ capable of handling pain, though it's obviously wincing as it falls over to its side again, against the sand. Clouds of sand burst up as he hits.

"Magikarp! Flop right over to him and land on him!"

And Magikarp somewhat just rolls over a few times, trying to get close enough to just sort of flop its body right onto the voltorb.

Nurse Joy smiles, looking at Yuuma.

"For your first time in a normal Pokemon Battle, you're doing very well! Keep it up."

Yuuma Nakano (21) has posed:
<<Thank you, Nurse Joy.>> Yuuma replies. <<Most of it is Denka, though. It knows what it's doing better than I do.>> Speaking of Denka? Oof! Landed on again! Nurse Joy's Magikarp seems to have gotten the hang of the pros of being its size!

Yuuma then directs, <<Denka! Shock your way out!>> Suddenly the Voltorb is surrounded by electricity! And if the Magikarp is still on top of Denka? It's probably not going to feel real great!

Nurse Joy (553) has posed:
The electrity covers the Magikarp. What's more, despite the amount of damage done, it looks like this has caused it the most pain of any attack. Yeah, it's still a water Pokemon. So of course Electricity is going to cause it some problems.

Despite its flailing due to the electricity, though? It's still going to be causing a bit of a problem. In fact, as it flails, it's trying to flail in the general direction of Denka. Just kind of flopping. Not a full out fall-on-the-enemy flop, but more of just striking.

Joy smiles, as she speaks to Yuuma again, "Look, when you're battling, it is you and your Pokemon fighting together, even if you aren't landing any strikes yourself. Your Pokemon believes in you, and you believe in it. So you should believe in yourself, too!"

Yuuma Nakano (21) has posed:
Something that big flailing around is going to cause more than a little damage. One of the flailings strikes Denka and sends it flying back towards Yuuma. Perhaps in an unintentional demonstration of that very bond Joy's talking about, Yuuma places himself where he can catch Denka. Thankfully the Magikarp does indeed know its strength, otherwise that would have hurt Yuuma. Would have been like taking a fastball to the stomach. "<I am all right. Not ready to quit yet,>" Denka replies, hopping from Yuuma's hands to the ground again.

Yuuma nods, both to Denka's words and to Joy's. <<If Denka and I didn't believe in each other, it wouldn't keep fighting,>> he surmises. These 'belief' and 'trust' things are important things!

"<Me too!>" Juru pipes up. "<You can do it! Both of you!>"

Yuuma chuckles, though it's soundless, more just a shaking of his shoulders. <<Want to try again, Denka? Keep at range-- use Sonic Boom!>> Incoming soundwaves! But Denka is trying to stay on the move now, hoping to strafe around the large Magikarp and hit from sides or behind while staying out of melee range.

Nurse Joy (553) has posed:
Nurse Joy smiles a bit. Well, at the least, these three have in fact managed to form a bond. Not everyone can actually manage that. So Joy smiles. AT least they have that going.

But, she finally does have one bit of criticism.

"I will note, if you ever enter an official battle... While it is heartwarming for you to catch the Pokemon, that could count as direct interference by a trainer, and get you disqualified. Don't worry about it for this fight, though. Though most League arenas would have you in a spot where such would be hard to do anyways..."

The Sonic Boom hits, once again. The powerful sound blast pushes Magikarp back along the beach's sand, leaving a trail in his wake. Joy, for her part, is keeping up the facade of cheerfulness to hide her real intensity. But she is, notably, moving around the battlefield rapidly. She has a bit of a 'cute' run, but she is running around the edge, trying to get better views at all times. And she's watching how Yuuma is acting about as much as the Pokemon. Trying to judge his next move, what he's seeing, stuff like that.

But, she figures she should try a trick with Magikarp, now.

"Magikarp, go for it! Use Dragon Rage!"

The Magikarp rights itself, and suddenly lets out a /bellowing/ roar. From its mouth, a /gigantic/ twister is bursting forth, flying towards Denka's position. It's not /super/ tough of a move, but it's a fairly reliable one, regardless.

Yuuma Nakano (21) has posed:
Yuuma looks a little sheepish when he's called out for catching Denka. <<Sorry about that,>> he responds. <<Force of habit.>> He doesn't see himself entering an official battle anyway, but it's something to take into account!

Juru has an explanation though! "<That's from the training for our 'Super Amazing Yo-Yo Boom' special technique!>" Juru 'Tiks happily. Yuuma just... facepalms.

But when he hears 'Dragon rage', Yuuma's eyes go wide and he peeks through his fingers. A Magikarp that knows Dragon Rage? That's surprising! And actually pretty darn impressive! Denka shuts its eyes, weathering the twister as best as it can. Yuuma gets his attention back on the fight then. <<Try the type advantage again, Denka! And use Charge!>>

Denka lights up with electricity again... and pauses. The electricity crackles even brighter! And this time, when it's released, it's much stronger!

Nurse Joy (553) has posed:
Again, electricity filles the Magikarp. This time, though, despite the /significantly/ increased damage from it? It manages to hold its ground all the better. Yes, its skin is incredibly charred. Yes, it is in /intense/ pain. And yes, this is probably the most damage it took in a single attack.

But it has a point to make.

     Type advantage isn't always everything.

Nurse Joy can sense something from her Magikarp, from just the way it is acting... Yes. It's time. He wants to use that move. No, this is not a psychic bond between trainer and Pokemon. This is, simply, Trainer and Pokemon knowing eachother well enough to read eachother's hearts anyways.

Joy points forward. Dramaticly. She smiles, shouting aloud.

     "Magikarp, use Hydro Pump!"

"MAGIKARP!" <There is a reason why Magikarp are considered Legendary Fish. LET ME SHOW YOU.>

And from its mouth, a massive column of water bursts out, to strike straight into Denka.

Yuuma Nakano (21) has posed:
This is why Yuuma never underestimates the Magikarp. If it can turn into a Gyarados, the power and spirit of the Gyarados must already be within it. Yuuma is quite sympathetic to the Magikarp's case here. He winces at seeing the damage to the Water Pokemon, hoping it doesn't turn out to be too bad.

Damaged or not, though, it's clear the Magikarp's fighting spirit is still at full strength. This is clear when SUDDENLY HYDRO PUMP! More surprise, and Denka only barely manages to get out of the way to avoid getting full-on nailed by a high-speed water column! It clips the edge of the Voltorb's round form, spinning it around fast enough to dig a small pit in the sand.

"<Goodness! No doubt of that,>" Denka comments as it hops out of that pit in the sand and squares itself again. One gets the feeling that it's smiling, not to ridicule, but in praise and encouragement for its opponent's fighting strength. Though it's hard to tell because... well, it only has eyes. There are plenty of scratches and dents in its exterior at this point.

Yuuma seems to hesitate here. He doesn't seem to know what to do. The practical part of him wants to have Denka use his electricity again, since that seems to work. But he doesn't want to cause the Magikarp any unnecessary pain. Not to mention the reaction to the Water Pokemon getting shocked is usually flailing and that might hurt Denka if it's too close.

On the other hand, Denka's still sparking. And is also soaked from the Hydro Pump. The water will conduct the electricity for a few moments more, and will give a weaker attack a little bit of oomph. Not enough to hurt the Magikarp, though. So... <<Denka! Quick, before your charge fades, Tackle!>> It should function as a bit of an electrical touch attack. The Voltorb, sparking with the last of its charge, rolls right at the massive Magikarp!

Nurse Joy (553) has posed:
The electric tackle is a good choice. It deals blunt damage, and also makes sure the electricty strikes closer to home. The problem is, this is putting Denka right into position for another powerful attack from Magikarp.

Joy smiles again, pointing forward. Yeah, this is quite a thrilling battle, no matter who wins! But she wants to /win/.

"MAGIKARP! Use Flail, TO THE MAX!"

And so, Magikarp starts flailing its body at the Voltorb. Over and over again, it is repeatedly trying to slam its fin into the small ball. It is packing an /incredible/ punch with each hit. And, if a hit misses, it'll probably cause a large hole in the ground where it ends up striking.

That poor beach, what did it ever do to the magikarp?

Yuuma Nakano (21) has posed:
Fins and whiskers. Everywhere. Denka is slapped, whipped, slammed by sheer bodymass as the massive fish flails about, leaving craters in the sand. Eventually the Voltorb can find its way out of the whirlwind of fish-slaps. One can almost swear its eyes are spinning in different directions. Ow. Yuuma winces again. He's thinking about calling it there, not wanting either of the Pokemon to get hurt.

But then Juru pulls on his shirt to get his attention. "<Not yet,>" he 'Tiks quietly. "<If you quit now, it's disrespect to the Magikarp because you didn't fight your best. And it'd be doubting Denka too, because you didn't let it fight its best, either. So... let Denka finish this, however it goes.>"

Yuuma bites his lip. He's concerned for the Pokemons' safety, but... Juru has a point. So... he takes a breath. <<Denka, give it all the charge you've got!>> And in response, Denka suddenly sparks up. It's quite the lightshow! And once its gathered, that lightshow's aimed right at the Magikarp!

Nurse Joy (553) has posed:
The massive electric lightshow illuminates the entire beach, and the Magikarp. The Magikarp's skeletal system is visible. It powers on, though. Just a bit more, just a /little/ bit more.

It powers on against the electricity, moving towards Denka. It's running out of steam, and fast at that. But, it has enough energy for one last gambit.

It simply tries to flop over upon Denka, without Joy even saying anything. She was about to shout an attack, but it just does /this/ instead.

Yuuma Nakano (21) has posed:
And that seems to be what does the trick! Denka, exhausted from the massive jolt, couldn't quite move in time to avoid ending up underneath the massive creature's flop! The Magikarp might feel a bit of squirming around before the Voltorb stills. Yuuma is clearly worried for them both, and starts forward when it looks like the battle's over.

<<Are you both okay?>> Yuuma inquires. He's not sure what it'll take to get Denka out from under the huge fish.

However, he's relieved when he hears Denka's voice, muffled as it is, say, "<I am fine. Just... resting.>" Juru actually snickers. Yuuma, on the other hand, looks to Nurse Joy with concern as he starts, ahem, 'fishing' under the Magikarp for Denka. He hopes neither of the Pokemon got hurt. He does note, though, <<Your Magikarp is stronger than any I've ever seen. How did you two manage that?>> By 'you two', he means Joy and the Magikarp.

Nurse Joy (553) has posed:
Magikarp, to make things easier, sort of just rolls back off of Denka. Yeah, it's weight is massive, but it's obviously not using the full amount of its strength. This is just a casual battle, after all!

"...Magikarp." <I'll let you explain, Joy. I'm a bit exhausted from that battle.>

Joy smiles, "You've done well, so get plenty of rest, okay?"

     And she recalls her Magikarp.

"Well... I met him when I was just a child. It was my first trip to the beach in Pallet Town. I found him washed up on shore and injured, so I took him home, and helped him get healthier. It's kind of what made me want to be a Pokemon Nurse in the first place."

"But, I let him go in the wild, but he kept coming back to me. Eventually I took him as my first Pokemon. He just kept getting really big, though. It's unusual, but not unheard of, for some magikarp to reach this size if cared for really wel..."

She smiles a bit, and goes towards Denka. She's pulling out a number of minor medical tools. A small device that seems to transmit electricity, some bandages, whatnot. She goes to work recharging the voltorb, as long as he doesn't fight it.

"I don't have a lot of tools here, so I can't help you /too/ much... But, at the least, I can help stabilize you. You should be fine, though! This wasn't too dangerous of a battle, Denka, but you still fought well anyways!"

She is acting really pleasant, as per usual.

Yuuma Nakano (21) has posed:
Yuuma listens to the story, offering a nod in response. <<Both of these were adopted rather than caught. I found Juru chewing on a power cord of a machine in a Pokemon center. Denka was being used by some evil group to power a machine.>>

Speaking of power, Denka's not fighting the recharge. In fact, it turns to look at Nurse Joy with a smile. "<Thank you,>" it says gratefully.

Then Yuuma seems to remember something. <<Oh that's right. You don't have to have a lot of tools. I can recharge Denka as long as there's a source. That's why I have only Electric types-- because I can manipulate electricity. So if you have a battery, I can transfer the charge.>>

Nurse Joy (553) has posed:
Now this surprises Nurse Joy. She has heard of some humans with psychic powers, but manipulation of electricity is a bit different than normal. But at the same time, it's sure to help with raising electric Pokemon.

She stands, and smiles, "Well, that's wonderful. It's a great way to make sure your Pokemon are fighting fit! But, if that's the case... I should probably run back to my Pokemon Center, to tend to Magikarp. He's fine, but you still did a number on him. You're a fairly good Pokemon Trainer, you know that?"

     Smile, smile.

Yuuma Nakano (21) has posed:
Yuuma seems embarrassed at the compliment. <<Thank you. That means a lot, coming from you.>> He stands, with Denka held in his free hand. Juru crawls back on the young man's shirt, to the backpack, and retrieves a 9V battery. That won't fix it all, but it'll make Denka feel better until Yuuma can tend to him properly.

Denka speaks up, "<That works two ways, Nurse Joy. You raised a wonderful partner. Thank you both for the battle. It is rare when I can battle as I did before Dark Industry found me.>"

Yuuma nods in agreement. <<Yes. Thank you, it was really fun. Both of you take care!>>

Juru? He points a forefoot at Joy. "<I'll come say hi when I'm bigger! Maybe I can go a few rounds with your Magikarp then!>"

Nurse Joy (553) has posed:
Joy nods to all of them, as she prepares to leave.

To Denka, she smiles, patting him on the head just slightly. "Don't worry, you'll have lots of opportunity for peaceful battle. And be sure not to eat too much electricity, and be sure to get plenty of exercise!"

To Yumma, a nod, "You take care as well. And even if you're using electrical powers to help heal your Pokemon, make sure they get frequent trips to the Pokemon Center, too."

And to Juru, she smiles. Joltik are just such small Pokemon, but... "When Magikarp was younger, he was actually incredibly tiny for his species. So you'll be able to grow big and strong just like him one day, I'm sure! ..Well, maybe not /quite/ as big, but you'll get big and strong at least! Keep training well, and listen to your master."

A final wave to all of them, "And, I'll see you all later."

She runs off, towards the water. A kayak is parked near a dock, and she hops into it, untieing the rope.

And then she paddles off at a speed that would take a motorboat to match. IE, her average paddling speed.
