Profile

Once an ordinary child growing up in the Shinto district of Fuyuki City, Shirou lost everything in a great fire triggered by the Fourth Holy Grail War's catastrophic end. A timely rescue and adoption by the magus Emiya Kiritsugu gave him a new life, but some would say his soul died that day. Bereft of all personal wishes, obsessed with his savior's smiling face and noble ideals, and wracked by deep survivor's guilt, Shirou promised to carry out the dying Kiritsugu's ridiculous dream of becoming a hero. He's currently more a hero of housework, but Shirou's determination knows no limits, easily compensating for his lack of normal mystic talent no matter how much blood he loses in the effort. Emiya Shirou is just as fair-minded, introspective, and trusting as he is dense, stubborn, hot-blooded, and impulsive, a sure-fire recipe for disaster now that he walks the Multiverse. It might work in his favor though, for his true talent lies in the reproduction of legendary weapons and armaments via his Reality Marble, Unlimited Blade Works.

TRULY SELFLESS: Survivor's guilt has burned away Shirou's sense of self. His body may have survived the fire, but some might say his soul died that day. Unable to so much as grasp the idea of living for himself, he instead lives for others. This mindset can be very bad for his health, for danger doesn't phase him and he sees the very act of helping others to be its own reward. He is broken inside in a fashion few will notice until it's too late.

STUBBORN: Few words describe Emiya Shirou better than 'determinator.' When he sets his mind on something, almost nothing can sway him from his course... no matter how impossible, distant, extreme, or costly it is. For some facets of life, this is a good quality. But when combined with his aberrant selflessness and supernatural dangers, it's guaranteed to get him in trouble.

CRAPPY MAGUS: Shirou lacks most advantages of coming from an established magus family, like high-quality Magic Circuits from breeding or an inherited Magic Crest full of easy-to-use magic refined over centuries. He also currently lacks the knowledge and control needed to draw in ambient mana, limiting him to just his body's own od (life force) as mystic fuel to use as prana. Beyond this, he has no talent with most Magecraft.

ONLY HUMAN: Despite his spectacular abilities, Shirou's only human. Even with enhanced durability, Reinforcement magic, and Avalon's regeneration, pushing his magic to the point where he can compete with Elites is costly, exacting a mighty toll in blood, excruciating pain, and terrific self-injury.

LIMITED BLADE WORKS: While undoubtedly his most powerful ability, Shirou's Reality Marble has some clear limits:

  • SPECIALIZED: Swords are easiest to Project, followed by other melee weapons (spears, hammers, axes, etc) and lastly defensive implements (like shields and armor.) The last category tends to be ephemeral and very short-lived. Projectile weapons other than bows cannot be managed at all.
  • EARTHLY MATERIALS: Unlimited Blade Works only has the resources needed to create Earthly weapons, mundane or fantastic. Extremely aberrant, alien, or extra-dimensional armaments are beyond his reach.
  • TRANSIENCE: Magical energy outside a body dissipates naturally, and his Earth's will ('Gaia') crushes Projections and deployed Reality Marbles as irregularities. Projected weapons inevitably crumble into free mana in minutes to hours, and Shirou can only maintain Unlimited Blade Works' boundary field for a few minutes before it collapses. The deployed Reality Marble is also somewhat fragile, and cannot withstand spectacular amounts of magic used within or nearby.
  • PRANA COST: Using just od, Shirou can only project about a dozen weapons, and Unlimited Blade Works is completely undeployable. This supply is also rarely sufficient to power an implement's special abilities, if it demands energy from him.
  • QUALITY LOSS: As human senses cannot fully capture something's existence Shirou's Projections are forever inferior to the original, though enough practice can get them pretty close. Especially grand weapons beyond mortal comprehension - such as the greatest of Holy Swords - take the biggest quality hit; challenging that limit is suicidal.
  • UNPOLISHED: Shirou's tracing is an imperfect art; great care is needed to refine production efficiency, longevity, and quality. His understanding of Unlimited Blade Works is still basic, and he lacks fine control. Consequently, his weapons often shatter inopportunely, and his defensive reinforcements can... uncomfortably backfire through his flesh.

Traced Armory

Projection Library for Unlimited Blade Works

KATANA: A two-handed zanbato-like weapon with armor-piercing qualities.
Source: Auron

SHIRATORI-MARU: Or, White Bird. An enormous katana wielded by Musyamon. Can enhance its strikes with flame.
Source: Musyamon (Dr. Violet Hunter)

MAN-SERPENT GREATSWORD: A great, thick cleaver with a somewhat curved blade wielded by serpent soldiers from Sen's Fortress, favored by the serpent soldiers who patrol Sen's Fortress in Lordran. Source: Serpent Soldier (Priscilla)

UCHIGATANA: A lengthy katana with a fine but fragile edge. Inflicts nasty cuts.
Source: Indra (Priscilla)

ESTOC: A large thrusting sword for piercing armor. Double-edged, tapering tip.
Source: Sebastian (Priscilla)

PARRYING DAGGER: A dagger with long, upswept guard prongs. Very good at snagging weapons.
Source: Sebastian (Priscilla)

TOWER SHIELD: Big as a man, easily as heavy.
Source: Great Knight (Priscilla)

GREATSWORD: Paired with the tower shield. Shirou needs both hands to wield it.
Source: Great Knight (Priscilla)

'ANIMA' JIAN: A traditional chinese longsword. Modified with anima circuitry to channel it.
Fighting Style: Chinese swordsmanship. Dizzying, flowing and sweeping blows to expose openings and mighty strikes to take advantage of them.
Source: Wuyin Tsai

KUSANAGI NO TSURUGI: Or, the Grass-Cutting Sword. A legendary holy sword ranking among the greatest of Earth mythology. It has the power to manipulate wind and, through it, fire. The wind enhances strikes and can be unleashed as a distance slash.
Type: Anti-Army
Rank: A+
Source: Saber of Silver

CLARENT: An ornate, dazzling white-silver holy sword intended to denote the right of succesion. Its stolen status degrades its true potential, however.
Title: Radiant and Brilliant Royal Sword
Type: Anti-Unit
Rank: C
Source: Saber of Red (Mordred)

DRAGONSLAYER SPEAR: A hefty and long spear wielded by Dragonslayer Ornstein, Guardian of Anor Londo. This ornate, golden weapon is longer than Shirou is tall, and bears a potent lightning enchantment that enhances strikes and can be launched as a bolt. The weapon is quite effective against dragons.

ZANTETSUKEN: The Iron-Cutting Sword of Odin, Elder Primal of Hydaelyn. Capable of slicing through most materials with ease using a war god's furious berserker style. The style is too strenuous for Shirou's body, and he suffers 4 damage with each attack. Its ultimate attack charges the blade with tremendous aether, resulting in a display of crimson lightning and mighty 'slash wave' cleaving everything in its way, but the strain auto-KO's Shirou.
Source: Gaius Van Baelsar (Odin NPC, FF14 TP)

LIFEHUNT WEAPONRRY: Priscilla's personal dragonscale dagger and scythe, which are capable of channeling the Lifehunt - an affliction that causes catastrophic internal injury and spiritual ravaging regardless of the victim's nature. The effect is weak since Shirou does not possess the Lifehunt, and harming enemies with it causes some backlash onto him.
Source: Priscilla

KINUGIRI: An exceptional katana forged by Hagane-Aoi, the demon swordsmith. Bears a blessing against demons, and is sharp enough to cleave through most materials with little effort. Can teleport to owner's hand at will if disarmed, and is an excellent conduit for elemental magics.
Source: Kirika

KILLER NIGHTMARE: An enigmatic weapon that shifts form into whatever kind of melee weapon the target finds most frightening - a knife, chainsaw, or giant shears, for instance. No matter the appearance it takes, Killer Nightmare is always an effective weapon.
Title: The Horror Tale Panoply
Type: Anti-Unit
Rank: E
Source: Horror Assassin (Aoko Aozaki)

AERODYNAMIC ROCKET SHOCKSPEAR: One of Vruasa Telash's earliest weapons, this spear is durable and has a low-grade electric stun feature similar to a tazer. Rocket thrusters add to the piercing power and make it a suitable, if unconventional vehicle.
Source: Vruasa Telash

EXCALIBUR GALATINE: The sister sword of King Arthur's fabled Excalibur given to Gawain by the Lady of the Lake. A mighty holy sword, Excalibur Galatine contains a 'pseudo-sun' in its hilt and can imbue its already exceptional edge with searing flame for decisive strikes. When activated as a Noble Phantasm, the weapon conjures a miniature sun via an instantly generated magical circle, and gathers the light into the blade for a long-distance slash as far as the user can visualize (several kilometers.) The burning horizontal slash pierces through enemies and erupts as a spectacular fireball.
Title: The Resurrected Sword of Victory
Type: Anti-Army
Rank: A+
Source: Sir Gawain

THANATOS: The Scythe of the Grim Reaper is not much of a weapon, despite its ominous appearance. While damage from its fine edge is real, the weapon's touch brings release and comfort to its victims, dulling the pain and anxiety of human existence. Those slain by it end their lives in a serene state of mind, and so theoretically will not linger as wraiths or apparitions. The weapon has a dark side, inverting this effect to instead haunt people with the griefs, pains, and regrets of their lives and inflicting agony with its touch, but this side only shows when paired with the Grim Reaper's other Noble Phantasm, 'Memento Mori,' so Shirou cannot access it.
Title: The Moments of Life Fall like Scattered Grains
Type: Anti-Unit
Rank: C
Source: Assassin (Death)

WISHBLADE: Possibly the highest quality polearm in all of Tellius. The Wishblade's technically a halberd given its axe-like features near the business end, though a lengthy pointed tip lends well to being wielded as a spear.
Source: Amalthea

HRUNTING: A blade passed from Unferth to Beowulf for the cause of slaying Grendel. As its previous wielder disgraced it, Hrunting's many wondrous powers have greatly diminished and it will not last for many more battles. Even so, so long as the blade's aimed generally towards a target and the wielder stays focused the weapon homes in on them until it lands a blow.
Title: Hound of the Red Plains
Type: Anti-Unit
Rank: C
Source: Berserker of White (Beowulf, Sir Gawain plot NPC)

NAEGLING: A fine sword wielded by Beowulf. No known special abilities, but a very effective sword.
Title: Ancient Gleaming Blade
Type: Anti-Unit
Rank: B
Source: Berserker of White (Beowulf, Sir Gawain plot NPC)

KANSHOU AND BAKUYA: Paired short swords crafted by Gan Jiang out of the Essence of Five Mountains and the Metal of Six Heroes at the sacrifice of his beloved wife, Mo Ye. Stylized after the Yin Yang symbol, Bakuya is black with a faint crimson hexagon pattern, while the white Kanshou has no ornamentation whatsoever. They have great ritual significance, and as enchanted blades can even withstand and repel weak magic assaults. The twin swords attract one another, allowing them to be used in a manner resembling boomerangs, and when wielded together their overall ability improves significantly.
Title: Gan Jiang and Mo Ye
Type: Anti-Unit
Rank: C-

NAMELESS AXE-SWORD: Crudely carved from the foundations of a temple to Heracles by the Einzberns, this weapon is not a Noble Phantasm but was wielded by Heracles during the 5th Grail War and has inherited his legendary skill and strength. The weapon's tremendous weight and great size makes it unwieldy to Shirou for most purposes, but that size and density simultaneously makes it a great impromptu 'shield.' The skill of Heracles, his trusty killing technique 'Nine Lives' can also be drawn from it and employed. Nine Lives, the Hundred Shooting Heads, is a technique that can theoretically apply to any weapon, involving 9 powerful yet precise strikes executed so swiftly they seemingly overlap.
Source: Chloe von Einzbern

MURASAME: The ancestral weapon passed down through the Murasame family through countless generations, the katana has learned to enjoy the taste of blood and hungers endlessly for it. Any blood it draws is absorbed to feed it, and some of the life it feasts on is tithed to the wielder. If unleashed, the hungry spirit lashes out to rend victims apart and feast on their life.
Title: The Hungry Blade
Source: Souji Murasame

EXCALIBUR: The legendary sword the Lady of the Lake gifted the Once and Future King, Excalibur is a Last Phantasm, the very greatest Holy Sword of the Earth, and is the crystallized dreams of victory held by all of humanity. Though unnaturally sharp and superbly durable thanks to its divine qualities, Excalibur's true ability is converting prana into destructive golden light. The planet's holy light can be used for energized slashes capable of cleaving through nearly anything, but when used to its full potential Excalibur launches a devastating slash wave large and potent enough to engulf towering monsters, castles, and everything else in its way. In its wake, only smoldering trenches are left. Excalibur is so far beyond Shirou's comprehension that any attempt to trace it results in a heavily degraded version. While such copies are still useful, particularly from inheriting Saber's masterful swordsmanship, he hasn't the prana to use it to its full potential.
Title: Sword of Promised Victory
Type: Anti-Fortress
Rank: A++
Source: Saber Alter (scene run by Chloe von Einzbern)

GAE BOLG: An ominous crimson spear made by Scathach from the bones of a sea monster and given to Cu Chulainn. The weapon's barbs bear a curse that aggravates all wounds it causes, making them harder to heal so long as the spear exists. (So this ability's use is quite limited as a projected weapon.) As an Anti-Unit Noble Phantasm, Gae Bolg reverses causality to launch a heart-piercing blow of unmatched precision - supposedly impossible to dodge or parry. (Cause: The Heart was Pierced, so Effect: The strike makes contact.) The only 'normal' defense against this is luck, so Elites tend to get off with just a deep aggravated wound at worst. As a thrown weapon and Anti-Army Noble Phantasm, Gae Bolg unleashes an explosion on impact powerful to decimate whole armies, but this is extremely prana-intensive.
Title: Barbed Spear that Pierces with Death/Soaring Spear that Strikes with Death
Type: Anti-Unit/Anti-Army
Rank: B
Source: Illya von Einzbern (as Lancer Card)

BOW OF EMIYA: The bow used by Heroic Spirit EMIYA, Blacksmith Hero, most known for transforming swords into arrow-bombs with magic and firing them from kilometers away. The material comprising this longbow is a highly-advanced synthetic material not available in Emiya Shirou's time that's capable of bearing enormous strain - particularly the strain of mounting Noble Phantasms for arrows and firing them with gale force.
Source: Chloe von Einzbern

BAKUZAN: The dark-colored katana wielded by Satsuki Kiryuin. Unlike many katana, Bakuzan features a pronged crossguard. The edge is razor sharp and dices through steel with little effort.
Source: Satsuki Kiryuin

MONOHOSHI ZAO: An exceptionally lengthy katana wielded by Sasaki Kojirou. While of excellent craftsmanship, the weapon itself is not a Noble Phantasm. However a high-quality Projection allows Emiya Shirou to draw on Sasaki Kojirou's swordsmanship and execute a degraded form of the Noble Phantasm-grade technique, Tsubame Gaeshi. The true Tsubame Gaeshi utilizes dimensional refraction to make three overlapping simultaneous strikes, but all Shirou can manage is a lesser version from an earlier stage in its refinement where the slashes are simply incredibly speedy consecutive ones.
Source: Fake Avenger (Sasaki Kojirou)

JOYEUSE: The ornate and wondrous sword of Charlemagne, said to contain the Lance of Longinus within its pommel. By itself, the weapon is of top quality and durability, a fine melee weapon. When activated as a Noble Phantasm Joyeuse converts an enormous amount of the wielder's prana into a devastating rainbow light-wave in a wide spread.
Title: The Glorious Blade That Shines A Thousand Colors
Type: Anti-Army
Rank: A+
Source: Charlemagne/Saber (Sir Gawain NPC)

FROBERGE: A blade seemingly of fairy construction, Froberge was awarded to Renaud by the magician Maugris. In its normal state it is simply a fine blade with a strangely cracked appearance, but when activated as a Noble Phantasm the blade shatters explosively and reforges itself out of pure mystic flame. The flame-blade passes through most attempts to parry or block - it can only be intercepted by enchanted armaments of equal or greater rank or other forms of divine protection.
Title: The Shattered Flame
Type: Anti-Unit
Rank: C
Source: Renaud de Montauban/Rider (Sir Gawain NPC)

MONTAUBAN: The fabled castle of Renaud is, in truth, also his armor. In its normal state, the armor offers immense protection (even able to withstand several blows from epic strikes), but its encumbrance slows even the mightiest hero. Activated as a Noble Phantasm, the armor shatters and can become a castle - the walls appear at the user's will in whatever configuration they wish. These walls normally last 24 hours, can withstand incredible damage from personal-scale weapons, can be made to relocate (although they lose defensive integrity while mobile), and will even blunt the impact of larger-scale weapons if combined, though they are unlikely to survive such beatings. Shirou has trouble projecting Montauban given that it's armor, and it tends to manifest as a filmy white wall, an incomplete manifestation that's still capable of enduring quite a barrage.
Title: Castle of White Marble
Type: Anti-Army
Rank: B
Source: Renaud de Montauban/Rider (Sir Gawain NPC)

FAITH: A one-handed longsword with enough grip space for two hands that was reforged time and time again while in the service of the Robot Unicorn Knight, Amalthea. These experiences evolved the seemingly straightforward weapon into a transcendant holy sword that has slain that which could not be slain and will do so again in a time of need. Its blade never dulls, but it has been known to break when used unjustly. Contrarily, it gives its all in the hands of a righteous wielder. Lastly, the embedded Kindness Rune increases its strength proportionate to the number of the wielder's friends.
