Ghost in the Shell: SAC-1
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is the TV series based upon the manga by Masamune Shirow. The series takes place in the year 2030 in a cyberpunk setting where cybernetic prosthetics and man-machine interfaces have become commonplace in the wake of two world wars that radically altered the landscape of the world - geographically and politically. Almost everyone exhibits a cybernetically modified brain and many have cybernetic senses and other limbs - some people even have completely prosthetic bodies. However, with advanced technology comes an ever-evolving criminal problem and new crimes such as 'eye stealing,' 'ghost hacking' and 'cyberbrain hijacking' have become some of the new insidious threats alongside old staples such as corporate espionage, political intrigue, civil wars and acts of terrorism.
Much of the series concerns the activities of Public Security Section 9, a Japanese special operations/counter-terrorism task force made up of ex-police detectives and ex-soldiers, alongside mercenaries and other experts. Under the command of Chief Daisuke Aramaki and Major Motoko Kusanagi, Section 9 deals with many threats - both foreign and domestic - that relate to cybercrime. This frequently brings them into conflict with gangsters, terrorists, rogue machines and even corrupt elements of the government, but it is all in a day's work for the expert team of Section 9.
Much of Section 9's activities tend to be focused around the Japanese city of Niihama. This setting is set during the events of the first season - although it will progress - and the Stand Alone Complex anime is considered primary canon - although elements from the manga and films can be utilised if they do not contradict the anime series itself.
