Malcolm Reynolds (Scenesys ID: 273)
"You know what the first rule of flying is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take a boat in the air you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps her in the air when she oughta' fall down, tells you she's hurtin' 'fore she keens. Makes her a home."

He's the hero who's everything that a hero is not. Captain of the Firefly-class transport Serenity, Malcolm Reynolds, or Mal, was a soldier for the Independents during the Unification War. After the Alliance's victory, Mal acquired Serenity, and took up work as a smuggler, taking whatever jobs presented themselves. His ship serves as a means of providing work in a now Alliance-run universe, even if the jobs are frequently of questionable legality. He travels with no destination in mind, rather flying where the job takes him, and where new work can be found for him and his crew. Serenity is Mal's only true home now, and the home of all those who crew it. A man of compassion and a strong sense of nobility, Mal is not above petty theft, smuggling, or even killing, so long as the work aligns with his own internal moral compass, which doesn't give much credence to the laws of the Alliance. He's wary in his dealings, but places faith in the fundamental goodness of people, and their ability to do the right thing. The type to shoot first, and skip the question altogether, Mal is extremely protective of his own, and fiercely loyal to his cause and to his crew. Once you're one of his, you're one of his for life.

Terrible Luck: Luck is one thing that Captain Reynolds simply does not have. No matter what the job is, whether it's swiping some medical supplies from an Alliance hospital, or boosting a small herd of cattle on a Rim planet, things never, ever go smoothly for the captain and his crew. There's always a wrench thrown into the mix.

Pride: Mal has a very hard time backing down from a challenge if he perceives his honor, or someone else's, to be in question. This has gotten him into trouble on more than one occasion, and makes business deals a bit trickier on occasion when you're simultaneously trying to sneak cargo past Alliance patrols and also keep your honor at the same time.

Religious Avoidance: Ever since the Independent's defeat at Serenity Valley, Mal has not only abandoned his religious beliefs, but has developed a strong avoidance to anything related to religion. Having Book, a shepherd, on board Serenity doesn't exactly help with this, and it's gotten the two into several mostly-friendly arguments on the subject. Otherwise, Mal avoids religious influence at all cost, and displays a strong aversion to it.

Prejudice: Perhaps Mal's defining trait, his extraordinary sense of anti-oppression is manifested in his decision to captain Serenity in order to try and stay outside the growing reach of the Alliance. He's resolutely against anything that gets in a man's way, believing government to do just that. Naturally, this puts him at constant odds with the law, and makes him inherently suspicious and mistrusting of any sort of large organization.

Kaylee Frye
Mal's mechanic, and one of the crew members that he's closest with, personally. Kaylee's kept Serenity afloat through explosions, "exciting" atmospheric entries, and some fancy flying. She's dependable, pleasant, and helps keep a lighter mood around the ship. Even though it seems like she's whining at Mal to replace some buffer panels that were supposed to last another week (six months ago), Mal wouldn't trade his mechanic for anyone. Best in the 'Verse.
Hoban Washburne
Mal's pilot. And a damn good one at that. Wash came to the crew with a list of reccomendations as long as the captain's leg, and has proved time and time again to be one of the best pilots in his corner of the 'Verse. He's dependable, funny, and calm to a fault. During his employ as Serenity's driver, he wound up hitched to Zoe, Mal's second-in-command, and probably the best fighter on the ship. Funny how things work out.
Their meeting was an odd one. Mal and the crew were in the middle of a job over on New Vegas, and wouldn't you believe it, someone started shooting. All of a sudden, about half of the guys dropped with swords sticking out of their chests, and the rest quickly fled from the young, teenaged girl in the hood. She needed a ride over to the next planet, but ended up sticking around a bit longer after that, and then a bit longer after that. Now, she's sort of been adopted as part of the crew. She helps provide security and recon during jobs, and has saved Mal's skin personally on more than one occasion. She gets along great with River, and so long as she don't lose track of one of those swords in someplace that everyone's favorite crazy teenager can find it, Mal's got no problem with her sticking around.
Courier Six
Mal met Johnny over on New Vegas while responding to an inquiry for a ship that could get some cargo off-planet without attracting undo attention. Ended up getting into a sizeable firefight with some of the denizens of the city, and Mal learned how handy Johnny can be with a stick of dynamite. He likes the man, and is happy to take up jobs from him as they come up. Likes the town, too. Always got good booze there. And plenty of it.

The Alliance. All of those meddlin' crooks. Surprisingly, Mal's been able to keep his head above water in the Multiverse so far, and hasn't gotten busted by the Union for smuggling, or pissed off the Confederacy for helping the Union transport goods. Yet.
