The Book of Darkness, a powerful artifact of a forgotten age, was at first owned by and then defeated by Hayate Yagami, with the help of Nanoha Takamachi and Fate Testarossa. The Defense Program, however, managed to create artificial beings from the imprints of these three mages. As the imprint of the former Master Hayate, Material-D ostensibly has the greatest control over the powers of the Book. She is still its servant, bound to it and compelled to search out Linker Cores or other sources of magic and knowledge. To do this, she uses her phenomenal magical powers, which include an array of powerful area-effect spells and general magics. While required to protect and feed the Book of Darkness, D has a large amount of free will within that restriction, and an even larger ego about it. She is arrogant and demanding, always speaking in the Royal We when referring to herself, demanding attention and obedience both in and out of battle. With the other Material sisters, she now seeks out the required energies to maintain the Book of Darkness in an 'active' state, but also has the silent desire to free herself from it, so that she may continue to exist in a state beyond a simple collection of magical code.

  • Material Fragment: All Material Fragments are maintained by the Book of Darkness itself. Their existence requires a certain amount of mana from the Book, and if the Book decides they are no longer a worthwhile investment, they will be deleted. Powerful anti-magic attacks may also injure them, if the spell is constructed properly, but this is not a given. Materials will also cease to exist if the Book is destroyed, although this is said to be impossible.
  • Servant of the Book of Darkness: As each Material exists only to provide energy for the Book of Darkness, their free will is only tolerated as a means to an end, as it is generally more successful with creative servants than without. The Book of Darkness only allows each Material to keep as much knowledge or power as is convenient, and any Material may be stripped of knowledge or even have their personalities or memories completely rewritten, should they grow too independent and rebellious. Their free will is an illusion, as well, since each one has a deeply-set directive to protect and serve the artifact.
  • Megalomania: Unlike Hayate's modest and kind personality, Material-D is arrogant to the point of ridiculousness. She firmly believes she is royalty, and treats everyone around her like servants. While she is usually smart enough not to aggravate anyone stronger than her, this can be quite an abrasive personality. Entitlement is central to her personality, and those who defy her draw her instant ire, whether or not it's a good idea.
  • Mobile Artillery: Material-D has massive power and excellent support skills, but is relatively fragile otherwise. She also has pretty bad aim, so relies on wide-area spells and the aid of spotter allies, requiring either help from others or massive collateral damage to get the job done in combat. The only time this flaw does not apply is when she is merged with the Book of Darkness as the Defense Program, and in that case she runs the risk of losing herself. Not the greatest trade.
