Hawaii

Naval Base at Pearl Harbor

Following several days of hot weather, a sudden chill morning grips the islands of Hawaii. Moisture in the air has condensed into a thick fog, wrapping Oahu in a cloudy blanket. Petty Officer Barnes swirls coffee in his mug, glancing over the screens of his radar station. The Chief should be in soon for the morning muster, then business as usual.

When a fuzzy contact appears on his scope, Barnes leans forward to gauge the range and size, his free hand scribbling numbers into the log. Small, on the surface. Probably a small boat or windsurfer. Some of those rigs have just enough metal to show up. As he scribbles down the coordinate and contact data, a second sweep reveals two more near the first. Barnes frowns slightly, shifting to a new line and adding the new data.

When the next sweep reveals dozens more contacts behind the first three, Barnes drops his pen. Jumping to his feet, he dashes to the window of his radar station, pushing it open and leaning out. In the fog, he can't see anything on the water below. He squints his eyes, peering through the mist. And that's when he hears it.

The dull, echoing sound of metal striking metal, a steady rhythm that echoes across the waves. Barnes grits his teeth, groping for the red-painted emergency phone on his station, just as he starts to make out a human silhouette striding across the water.
