Tonight, Homura clings to her pillow harder as she sleeps.

Two girls lie down amidst the ruins of what must have be a city district, in two inches of rain water. One black-haired, in pigtails, and the other pink-haired, each holding a pulsing object in their palm, purple and pink tainted black by shadows. The pink-haired girl suddenly moves over and taps another object on the black-haired one's, and it starts shining brighter until the taint is gone, darkening the new one instead. They are both crying.

"W-Why?! Why did you use it on me?"

"Because... I want to ask you something only you can do. Homura... you can go back in time, right? Change history so an end like this can't happen?"

"Y-Yes..."

"Then... can you go back, and save stupid me before I get tricked by Kyubey?"

"I... I swear it! I promise I'll save you! No matter how many times I have to go back and try, I swear I'll protect you!"

"Thank you..."

The pink-haired girl suddenly writhes in pain.

"C-Can I ask you... one more thing?"

The black-haired girl's answer is a wordless, tearful nod.

"I... I don't want to become a Witch. There are awful, sad things in this world... but... there's a lot of things... worth protecting too..."

"Madoka!"

"Homura... you... finally called me by my first name... I'm... happy..."

The pink-haired girl lifts her hand up, barely, holding out the blackened round crystal. The black-haired girl's outfit changes after much hesitation, and she produces a large pistol that she aims at it.

She starts bawling loud enough to completely cover the sound of the gunshot.
