In a San Diego bar, two pilots returned from Operation Volcano share drinks and stories.
"It got crazy fast," Captain Daniels muttered, "No sooner did I have visual of the island, when my F18 was swarmed with these nasty white balls, or ghosts I guess. All teeth and guns, tore my wings off before I could do anything." He grins wryly, "They left me alone when I ejected, though."
"I hated those damn things," Lieutenant Madison nods once, gesturing with her beer, "Spent more time picking them off my wingman than anything else, but there's so freakin' many of them, it's like picking fleas off a dog with tweezers." Glancing down, she frowns, "The weirdest thing happened, though... When those angry ping-pong balls came my way, they got jumped by something else. Looked almost like toy planes?"
"You think that's weird?" Daniels glances aside, "I think I met an angel. After I ejected, riding the 'chutes down to sea level, right? I never hit the water. Someone caught me. Someone caught the whole damn chair. She told me to hang on, sweetest voice I ever heard, and then threw me-- Actually freakin' threw me-- back to the Stennis. I went down damn near ten miles away from it, and thanks to her, wound up just a hundred yards off the side!" Shaking his head, he lifts his drink, "Never saw her face, just a glimpse, some blonde floating there..."
"An angel, huh?" Madison winks, "You always were lucky, must be your guardian at work."
