"The Grid. A digital frontier. I tried to picture clusters of information as they moved through the computer. What did they look like? Ships? Motorcycles? Were the circuits like freeways? I kept dreaming of a world I thought I'd never see. And then, one day...I got in."
In 1982, Kevin Flynn discovered there was a world connected to his own. One born of the human race's use of computers. Accidentally transported inside the computer realm, he was lost in an alien world but survived thanks to the aid of several Programs he befriended. He aided them in stopping the Master Control Program in its goal to rule both the digital and material world. After returning to the non-digital world, he worked his way up to CEO of the up and coming ENCOM Software Company, and continued to work upon his own private projects. The most notable one was the Grid: a sealed system on a high end server located in the basement of his arcade. There he spent several years directly working to develop a digital utopia. He imported a small handful of programs, such as his friend TRON, and he programmed other helpers such as Clu. From his viewpoint, this took years, but on the Grid time went much faster. To Flynn's shock, one day from the sea of simulation came the ISOs, or Isomorphic Algorithms. He had not programmed them; they were a new form of life, spontaneously generated. While some Programs were okay with them, many were terrified of flat out hated these strange beings and their lack of a defined purpose.
Flynn saw the ISOs as nothing short of a miracle; but Clu saw them as an unpredictable blight on the perfect world he had been programmed to help create and maintain. He went rogue, engineering a virus known as Abraxas. The crisis allowed Clu to pin the problem upon the ISOs, turning more of the Programs against them. Until finally? Clu turned the second in command of system security against Flynn, a system monitor named Dyson. With Dyson's aid? Clu betrayed Flynn, seemingly killing TRON and forcing him into hiding. Shortly after that the purge of the ISOs began. Some Programs fought in their defence, but they were out-numbered and out-gunned. The ISO cities fell to the onslaught of Clu's armies. One security Program by the name of Aynon fought on even during this madness and went missing during the chaos. Those few ISOs that survived went to ground and hid as best they could from Clu, who turned his attention to perfecting the system.
The port city of Argon has recently fallen under the direct control of Clu. With General Tessler's successful occupation of the city, control was quickly secured; however, a strange thing started happening. A Program clad in TRON's combat armour would appear and resist them. They earned the name of the Renegade. Still it has inspired other Programs to rise up, and they wonder if TRON lives.
