VATOL HALFTAIL would have you believe he is a wielder of powerful magicks and an innovator of great renown, and he would only be half right. Born to be a prophet of the vile Horned Rat, Vatol's clan was butchered shortly after his birth, and he himself was secluded by one of the victors as a sort of experiment: to see if a Skaven who would be a Seer could instead be taught to be a loyal servant. The experiment only partly succeeded, giving him a hint of humanity when removed from the teeming hordes of the Under-Empire... a trait that sent the Warlock-Engineer who had begun the experiment into a fit of violent paranoia before the experiment's conclusion. Following the death of his would-be master (and the experiment's ultimate failure), Vatol struck out into the world, claiming the now-deceased Skaven's place among Clan Skryre's many Warlock Engineers with a purpose of his own: to use his band of warriors to discover the secrets of his world and many others, and to build something that proves his greatness in the process.
DANGEROUS TECHNOLOGY: Vatol's inventions all share several flaws that are simply a result of how they were designed. For one, his inventions are powered by warpstone, a material that is mutative and poisonous in its raw state, and the inclusion of which gives each device a weak point to exploit once it's been discovered. The devices themselves are also rarely made with the safety of the operator in mind, making them almost inevitably as dangerous to the user and his surroundings as they are to their targets.
COWARDLY: Every Skaven knows the most honorable position for a commander is in the rearmost rank of his army. Vatol is not particularly brave, only being willing to risk his own life when there are others along with him to "volunteer" for the dangerous parts first. He will display reckless bravery while surrounded by a mob of Skaven, but will just as quickly turn tail if things start to look south. In a one-on-one fight, Vatol is most likely to cheat or run, having no desire for anything like a fair fight, and will only stick around if retreat isn't an option. You know what they say about cornered rats...
LIFE IS CHEAP-CHEAP: Vatol thinks that this "Pyrrhic" guy has got the right idea. Vatol is unconcerned with the possibility of sustaining massive casualties during his operations, something that makes him difficult to work with when his allies actually care about the cost in lives. It also makes it hard to find good help. He rarely has more than one exceptional individual under his command, and otherwise must typically make do with fodder.MOSTLY AMORAL: Vatol ascribes to the ruthless Skaven way of life in most respects. He stabs people in the back without a second thought, sends dozens to their deaths without batting an eye, uses poison, disease and assassination and utterly lacks the concepts of honor or fair play. However, his unique upbringing has left him with a hint of something like humanity, making him somewhat less crazed than most Skaven and sometimes in a state none of his fellows can explain. He is occasionally prone to bouts of confusing empathy, something that leaves him vulnerable in times where he should be paranoid, and is oddly altruistic when he should be taking advantage of weakness instead. While this can make him easier to work with, it does not make it easy to get other Skaven to follow him when these moods strike.
