Cast of Characters: 253, 638

Psyber (253) has posed:
Just yesterday, Beatrice had requested a meeting with Psyber after hearing about what he did for a living! Psyber always tries to accommodate meetings where he can, and the girl seemed nice and well-meaning enough. Psyber's schedule was busy in December, though. The Pagan origin of the holiday's core celebration meant he had a lot of field mission to counter seasonal cults. Not to mention finals over at Miskatonic being rough as he was getting done with his first semester as a teacher. He also, pretty simply, wanted to show off what he meant for Beatrice a little.

And that's why he chose Boston Harbor for the meeting place. Despite the chill in the air and the cold winter weather, Boston is still a gorgeous city and its harbor is no different. A light falling of snow is starting to dust the ground and the piers and boardwalks, but it doesn't stop people from going about their business. Numerous ships are coming and going from the harbor and the streets are pretty crowded. Which is a good chance to see what Psyber meant by cohabitation: There are lots of humans, and in fact the population is dominantly human, but none of them seem to bat an eye at the occasional demon in a business suit, or a werewolf working on street construction, or even a giant that's helping to move steel girders up a building while the crane-operator is out to lunch. About one in every dozen or so inhabitants is a non-human, but they seem integrated into society and working alongside the people of Boston.

Psyber himself is standing on the edge of the docks, sitting on a safety rail and watching people go by as he sips on a steaming cup of black coffee, stretching out a bit and waiting for the girl to arrive. He's dressed in his pretty standard attire: A long black duster, slacks, and boots. A splash of red is around his neck today in the form of a bright scarf that sometimes flutters in the ocean breeze.

Beatrice Marshal (638) has posed:
Beatrice is right on time, as always. The girl is dressed in light blue and pink clothes - a warm vest, under a jacket, and long stockings under her skirt. Which she still insists on wearing even though pants would probably be more sensible. Oh well. She doesn't appear to be cold, anyway.

On her head she's wearing a hairband with a pair of bunny-like ears and a Moogle pom-pom attached to it. The pom itself is pink. She also has a cat-ear umbrella over her head.

She seems to have had time for some shopping, given the bags she's carrying in her other hand. The sort of bags you get at very expensive boutiques - as well as places trying to imitate them. There's a teddy bear poking out of one of the bags.

Psyber (253) has posed:
Part of the advantage of Psyber's seated and elevated position, as well as his natural height, is that it's easy to play 'spot the non-Bostonian'. Beatrice, particularly in the outfit she's wearing, sticks out enough that he figures 'That is probably the girl from the radio', and so he lifts a hand to wave to her.

"Yo! Beatrice Marshal, right?" He shouts across whatever distance is between the two of them. He hops off the rail he was seated on and puts his free hand in his pocket, sipping his cofee with the other one as he strolls his way over towards her, "Interesting outfit. That all the fashion rage for kids at your Academy?" He asks in a mixture of teasing and curiosity.

"Welcome to Boston. I'm Psyber," He adds a moment later, smiling in a cordial manner and giving her a polite nod of his head, "I hope you found the city alright after you were done shopping around. Holiday Presents?"

Beatrice Marshal (638) has posed:
The girl stops dead in her tracks as Psyber calls over to her. She doesn't need to look around to find the source of that voice, though, looking towards Psyber immediately. She reaches up to give a sort of half-wave with her bag-toting hand, which she self-consciously turns into brushing aside a bang halfway through the motion.

"I, um," she stammers, shyly. "...No. It's just... something I felt like wearing. I figured it would be cold, so..." She looks down at her bags. "Oh! Um. Yes. The Day of Victory is less than a month away, and I like to get my gift shopping done early..."

Psyber (253) has posed:
"It's kinda cutesy fashionable chic. I like it, it's like one of the animes where you want all the sempais to notice you," Psyber says with a grin and a thumbs up towards her. His office employs a lot of japanese teenagers, but his personal grasp on the anime genre is suspect at best. He twirls around a bit as a gag, tossing his coffee cup in a trash can, "I tend to trend towards the Gritty Noir Detective look," At least he's making fun of himself, too, stopping after his little twirl and saying in a fake and gravelly voice, "I like my coffee black and my whiskey neat." He laughs after this.

"I need to get my own Christmas shopping done. I have a ton of people to buy presents for," He notes, nodding a bit to himself, "Ah, but anyway. It's really nice to meet you!"

Beatrice Marshal (638) has posed:
Beatrice looks totally baffled! "Wh-what? What are... animes...?" She peers at him dubiously as he spins around. Then, she giggles in unison with his laughter, instantly set at-ease by his antics. Apparently.

Beatrice looks at her hands for a moment, then stoops down to set down her bags. She then stands and holds out her now-free hand. "Pleased to meet you as well, Mister Psyber," she says. "I've... noticed there are a lot of, um. Different. People around here."

Psyber (253) has posed:
"It's a japanese style of cartoon. They're all the rage these days with the 15-25 crowd," Psyber says in a shrugging motion, "Please, though. You can just call me Psyber. I only like Sir or Mister when I'm in the field or on Union missions. I like to be relaxed and informal."

He looks around at her comment about the city, "Yeah. This city is pretty much the most progressive place on my world for Natural-Supernatural cohabitation. Years, decades of my work. I'm pretty proud of it. It's what I was talking about when I told you that I think monsters can live alongside humans sometimes."

"You seemed interested in the concept, so I wanted you to see for yourself."

Beatrice Marshal (638) has posed:
"I-I don't watch cartoons!" Beatrice says - a little too quickly. And for that matter, Psyber never insinuated she did! Someone's a little defensive. She then catches ehrself, and blushes deeply. "I-I... prefer to, um..." Fidget. "My father is a Marquis, you see. So I try to be... formal, most of the time. I-it's probably a bad habit..."

She sort of trails off, then looks around - eyeing one of the clearly nonhuman Bostonians. "...It's a strange concept. These people... wouldn't be called 'monsters' in Galianda. Monsters are the spawn of Chaos. But, they're... obviously not Humes, either." Pause. "Well, some of them could pass as new subraces, I suppose. Carbuncle knows Odynari look kinda weird."

Psyber (253) has posed:
"You do not watch cartoons! I'll remember that for the future," Psyber says in mock seriousness, tapping his temple a few times and then giving her a wink, "But if it makes you feel better to use Mister, I guess I can learn to live it with. It'd be one of the less weird things people called me."

He seems interested in her take on the city, though, "Well these are the more humanoid monsters. Obviously there are some that are less so. Dragons that live in caves in the hills and wooded areas and other more bestial-inspired magical creatures." He wags his hand a bit, "In this world, most people consider them monsters due to permeating legends and mistaken lore. Or, in the simplest explanation, a few bad ones a couple centuries back ruined the reputation of their entire species."

Beatrice Marshal (638) has posed:
"Oh! Dragons. Dragons are a thing." She hmms. "...Dragons appear to be a universal constant. Huh. The Dragoons will be thrilled." She pauses for a moment. "Or... possibly horrified. I'm not entirely sure." She giggles a little bit.

Psyber's explanation for why they're called 'monsters' stops her giggling in short order, though. "...Oh. An entire species branded as evil just because of a few bad apples? That's... sad."

Psyber (253) has posed:
"It's how society works before the advent of social communication like it is these days," Psyber explains calmly, hands in his pockets, "A series of grisly murders, a couple bad werewolves behind it, suddenly all werewolves are hunted and evil. And it sparks an animosity that lasts generations until people forget what started it." He uses an off-hand example.

"The world is basically a high-school rumor mill at its core." He grins a bit and then says, "So someone has to counteract that. You open up a dialogue and its amazing how many misunderstandings just..." He takes his hand out of his pocket and snaps his fingers, "Poof. Disappear."

"So what are you in school for, anyway?"

Beatrice Marshal (638) has posed:
Beatrice frowns. "...I suppose I can understand how that would happen, although... It's also kinda hard to picture it? I guess because we have a unified enemy we don't really need to create targets to focus our hate on..." She shrugs her shoulders.

"Oh? Um. Well. Alexander Academy is primarily an institution devoted to giving us the tools to make ourselves productive members of society. So we're taught, you know, regular subjects like history, mathematics, literature... and also how to excel at our Jobs." Psyber can almost -hear- that capital J.

Psyber (253) has posed:
"You already have a job?" Psyber asks curiously with a tilt of his head, looking pretty curious to hear that, "I mean, the rest sounds like a pretty normal school, but the job thing is new. Unless it's some part of your world and we're mish-mashing meanings or something." He adds as a cautionary note.

"Overall, sound fun, though. You enjoy it there?"

Beatrice Marshal (638) has posed:
"Jobs... oh -man- it is so -weird- how many worlds don't even have those. Okay uh." Pause. "Yes, I do enjoy it there." She coughs. "So! Jobs. Um. Legend states that when the world was young, Humes were given power by the Divines to fight the forces of Chaos. We were given Jobs, which are... basically areas of expertise. The original six were Fighter, Black Belt, Thief, Black Mage, White Mage and Red Mage."

She shrugs her shoulders. "Apparently Jobs are what allow us to become stronger simply by fighting monsters? I dunno, it's hard to imagine a world where they -isn't- what naturally happens."

Psyber (253) has posed:
"OH! Is that like how Cecil Harvey's Magic Mountain Ghost Dad made me a Holy Knight after vision quest into my fucked up trauma and really pissed off Faruja by circumventing years of training and restriction?" Psyber says-slash-rambles, the parallel between her description of a job and his strangely bestowed power clicking together at the same time, "Okay! Now I'm on board with what you're saying. That's pretty cool that it's a standard thing on your world."

Beatrice Marshal (638) has posed:
Beatrice giggles a little bit as Psyber rambles. "I guess there -are- parallels in other worlds..." She smiles up at him. "Um. My Jobs are Arcanist and Time Mage." Pause. "M-most people only have -one- Job. Having two is seriously rare. Which... I guess is what makes me Elite...?"

Psyber (253) has posed:
"Ooooh, two jobs. Fancy. Arcanist and Time Mage. That second one is pretty self-explanatory, I know a lot of people that do time stuff. But what does an Arcanist do?" He wonders aloud, also passively asking her for an explanation.

"So you give any thought to what you wanna do after you graduate?"

Beatrice Marshal (638) has posed:
"--Time Mage may not be as self-explanatory as it sounds at first blush. Time Mages practice Time and Space Magic... usually abbreviated to Time Magic..." She looks down for a moment, then back up. "Arcanists! Um, we Arcanists study Arcanima - the, um, mathematical patterns that define reality? By channeling MP through them we can... well, theoretically we can do -anything-, but a lot of things are much easier to do with a more traditional magical discipline. S-so we tend to focus on, um, more obscure stuff... like diseases."

She doesn't give that any chance to sink in. "After graduation? Well, um. My parents want me to be a lawyer, or a magistrate, or something. I'm not totally sure what I want, though." She gets a little quiet. "I-I -kinda- want to be a superhero, but that's... kinda childish..."

Psyber (253) has posed:
Psyber nods his head as he listens to the explanation of both jobs, "I see, I see. Time and Space, like I said, I know a lot of people that work with that. It's pretty crazy to see what it can do at high levels, though. And Arcanima sounds pretty cool. Pretty intense, though." He pauses, "So it's like magical calculus or something? Instead of just doing the simple equations for effects, you have to do the more complex ones for the same stuff. But you get a wider array of utility, right?"

He seems to think over her desires post graduation, "You should do what you think is best for you. Don't take too much pressure from people around you. Your fate is yours to make." He smiles, "I proooobably can't help you be a superhero, but I can help you network with people who can teach you lots of stuff. You should consider interning at my business on-and-off. I don't mind freelancers."

Beatrice Marshal (638) has posed:
Beatrice nods her head slowly. "That sounds about right. Calculus." She laughs. "Man, I suck at calculus. Why'd I have to get lumbered with the magical equivalent of it?" she jokes, mildly, smiling.

"Ah..! m. I-if you think it wouldn't be too much trouble for your friends..." Pause. "Um. Interning..? At your business? But, I'm. I'm only fifteen. I don't think I'd be any good."

Psyber (253) has posed:
Psyber shakes his head, "You'd be surprised. It's not about age in the Multiverse. It's dedication, skill and how good at your job you are." Psyber says seriously, looking at Beatrice, "Age is pretty much just a number. Whether you're thirteen or thirteen hundred won't make a difference to the people I work with, just so long as you have their back and treat them well."

He does warn her, "SOME of them can be a bit crass." His mind turns to Arthur and Vruasa in particular, "But overall they're a good lot. If you want in, I'm not opposed to taking you on as a free agent."

Beatrice Marshal (638) has posed:
Beatrice looks down, then shrugs. "...Eh. A lot of my classmates can be a bit crass. I mean. They're boys." She grins a little bit... then looks dreadfully shy again. "If you... think it would be a good idea. I guess I can try. I-I promise to do my best!"

Pause. Paauuse. "...What does your business actually do...?"

Psyber (253) has posed:
Almost as if reading a rehearsed line, "Investigate threats around the Multiverse and participate in numerous peacekeeping activities with a particular focus on issues originated in monsters, paranormal activity, or occult leanings." He smiles at her, "In short, people work on whatever issues affect them personally or whatever they wanna work on, and the office helps you network with other people that can help you. It's kind of like a Faction Lite. I employ a lot of people. A lot of them like helping."

Beatrice Marshal (638) has posed:
Beatrice cants her head to one side. "...You've said that a lot before, haven't you," she comments idly. "...Mmh. Well, that... does sound like a good group of people to get to know, if that isn't all propaganda..."

She coughs. "U-um. Sorry. I know it isn't. That was a joke."

Psyber (253) has posed:
"It's part of my sales pitch. I DO run the biggest Paranormal Investigation business in the Multiverse." He smiles slightly and then notes, "But it's something I really believe in. And they're all a legit group of people. We do have a Confederate, though, so be careful what you say."

"I'll see about getting you frequencies and accesses to my group and their resources."

Beatrice Marshal (638) has posed:
Beatrice nods her head, slowly. "I... appreciate it. Um." She looks up at the sky. "...Oh. Pressure drop. It's going to start snowing a bit more heavily. Maybe we should head inside somewhere..."

Psyber (253) has posed:
Psyber looks upward when she points out that it's going to start snowing more heavily, "Is it? I hope they salt the streets a bit more this year. It's always a pain to do car chases in this weather." He shrugs, "Sure, I know a cafe near by where we can get some coffee."
