Faruja The Phoenix Shrine has much improved; the crumbling route through the underground cavern is now mostly repaired, complete with devotive statues to Faram and Saint Ajora, marble upon which the molten lava below reflects upon. The local monsters stay far below, their fire-spirit guardian occasionally glimpsed from atop the roadway. It's been extended all the way to the shrine, and guardrails tastefully installed to prevent many an unfortunate death. It's still a very dangerous place, but there's a renewed feeling of calm amongst the cavern depths.

Those sensitive, however, will still feel the lingering corruption when approaching the shrine. It's a taint that's yet to be cleansed from the great, gold-clad Cathedral, emblazened with Ajoran symbols and the great Esper herself.

Two armed guards, likely very miserable at that, stand guard at the entrance to the cavern, demanding entrance papers. Luckily, the presence of a particular Inquisitor makes entry simple enough. Faruja speaks to those assembled before they start the long, fiery trek to the Shrine itself.

"The Esper Phoenix is far more...relaxed, shall we say, than most. She is the embodiment of Holy Resurrection, Healing, and the destruction of Daemons and Undead. Show her a modicum of respect, and she shall be willing to speak. Agreed? Otherwise, speak as ye will. Determining how to cleanse her shrine is paramount, however, she is a gentle soul despite her flames." Faruja looks sharply at all gathered. For a Summoner, this is a very important honor.

Then, he leads them down, past statues, flaming spider-ants, and Bombs. A few even pass by harmlessly.

Then, they arrive within the Shrine itself. Here, it's decidedly empty. Previous statues have been cleared out for replacement. In the center of the round, hot, stone room is a flaming brazier. The fire bursts upwards as a massive phoenix fades into existance. Looking down with yellow eyes, one could almost imagine a smile on her beak as she lands upon the lip of the large brazier. Her voice is serene, and any sparks or feathers from her would seem to ease pain rather than harm.

"Good evening, little ones. Whom enters my domain?" her head cocks curiously, a feather dislodging.

Faruja bows. "Honored Esper Phoenix, thank thee for granting us this audience."

The fire-bird chuckles. "Summoner Faruja! Always so formal." A wing reaches over, and tickles the rodent's nose. Ahh-chooo! He falls over. The Esper laughs.

"Oh, forgive me, little one! One day /you/ need to learn the lesson of relaxing. We are both Children of God, no matter our forms."

Phoenix looks up, a bit of mischief in her eye. It fades, and she nods. "You have brought friends! Almost too much for an old bird~. Welcome, all of you. Please, introduce yourselves."
Ainsley     Ainsley is, in fact, accompanying the party. She does so by floating the entire way. She bobs along through the air, showing a sort of odd weightlessness, the occasional ruffling of air disturbing her robes, or a gentle spark of electricity leaping along her form. She doesn't seem inclined to /walk/ when she can test how long she can fly without needing to rest.
She only lands when the party is inside. She is well aware of etiquette, so she only smiles at Faruja mildly as he explains the approach the party must take. She clasps her hands and begins looking around at the temple interior. Once the Phoenix is done speaking, she gives a curtsey of respect, and then lifts up off the ground to begin floating around and inspecting the architecture. After making sure Faruja is back on his feet, of course, carefully grasping under one of his arms.
Frederica     Frederica can certainly respect that, though she's never had any dealings to speak of with resurrection or with undead. Well, not personally. She had sort of died once or three times and returned to life, but those were alternate selves rather than HER. No matter what that big fat jerk said to get a hug from Frederica's sister!

Without the slightest hesitation, Frederica steps up and bows, Japanese-style, to Phoenix. Then she speaks, her voice abnormally subdued and entirely at odds with her body language. "I don't know if you remember me, Phoenix. I've been here once before. I am Frederica Tenjuin." she introduces herself softly. Their last meeting was pretty significant to the pyro girl after all. The idea of not being remembered, that's a scary one, particularly with the question the Phoenix had asked her that time. "I-I don't know what is needed to cleanse your shrine, but I want to help." she offers, voice gaining some strength.
Procyana Procyana shows her appreciation during the trek down by letting out a low whistle at the redecorating. "You people have really cleaned this place up." Shame between the WMAT tournament and her own 'occupation' she's missed out on some of the more recent events. But she's here now. That's the important part, right?

Wait, the bird IS MADE of fire? She thought the fire thing was just going to be a motiff or something, because phoenix and all that. Being literally fire wasn't quite in the expectations.

No time to loose composure though, so she puts the social graces she's picked up over the years of occasionally having to hobknob with higher socialites to make a sweeping bow to the phoenix-on-fire. She is such a show off sometimes. Or most of the time. "Agent Procyana, a ... covert enforcer, if you will." Now is not the time to try and explain the intricate details of her profession that makes her more than just your typical super spy.
Auron     Auron is smart enough to keep quiet until Faruja gets them past the guards. He doesn't have the clout here that he'd have had in Spira years ago. Mind, if he showed his face there now, he'd cause a panic. He nods his understanding to Faruja's request to show respect to Phoenix, but remains quiet as they're led into the shrine. He's going to keep an eye on those fiends. The concept of fiends not wanting to hurt him is a strange one.

When Phoenix makes her appearance, Auron... actually bows to her. It's more formality than he shows... well /anybody/, really. Though he chuckles as Faruja sneezes himself to the ground. Ainsley seems to have that in hand, though, so he instead turns to the Esper.

"My name is Auron," he offers quietly. Frederica's words get a nod. "I'd like to help too, if there's anything I can do." He doesn't mention the 'Church' thing, or the 'Yevon' thing, or the 'dead' thing. There's a lot of thing's he's not mentioning, in fact.
Finna     Catching wind that Faruja was going to be meeting one of the great spirits of this world and that they needed help, Finna did indeed agree to lend a hand. And for the first time in a while she's come in herself - for she has no intention of playing tricks on the great spirits of other worlds.

So it's as a Child of Luna that she approaches the firebird. The Mark of the Moon glistens upon her forehead... faint, but visible. There's no doubt that Phoenix will easily spot the tail and ears of a fox - in the summer grey-black coat of the arctic adapted varieties - on Finna's body.

And speaking of being used to ARCTIC climates...

"It's... too... hoooooooooot!" She's sweating bullets and drinking excessively from a waterskin.

Faruja sneezing gets her iggling though, and the sound quickly evolves into full-out quiet laughter. "Finna Snowdancer!" Confounded volcanoes, who ever thought this was a good idea? The HEEEAAAAAAAAAAT.
Allyn The large wolf pads along quietly with the other members of the group. He glances around once they have entered the temple and his ears perk up on his head as Phoenix speaks. He gives Phoenix a bow, well as much of a bow as a wolf can give, "Greetings Phoenix, I am Allyn, though I believe I was an eagle that time. It is good to see that you are well." he gives Phoenix a wag of his tail and then pads over to Finna and sits down, "It is a little hot, guess I shouldn't have come in something so furry."
Toph Beifong     Over and over again she finds herself in Ivalice. Why? Who knows. Maybe because she feels that she owes the rat, she muses. He did help her when she was in trouble, but seriously. Espers?

The blind girl stands at the back as they arrive in the shrine, arms crossed. This is spiritual mumbo jumbo, stuff that doesn't interest her. Things she knows nothing or very little about. Show her respect? Well, she can keep her mouth shut, at least. This isn't her field of expertise at all. So she keeps quiet, letting the others greet the firebird as it appears. While she can't see it, she can feel that there is more warmth in the room. Heh, this is right up Frederica's alley, isn't it?

It should be clear that Toph doesn't seem at ease where she stands at the back of the group, her head slightly lowered, her eyes pointed towards the floor.
Marrik Marrik nodded absently as Faruja spoke. He was more interested in the fork the corruption took than his words. He was tempted to reach out with his power to ggive a more thorough examination, but he was in a mental quandrey given he did not want to piss giant flaming bird off. Then at some point while he wasn't paying attention to his surroundings he heard a sneeze.

Then he looked to the sound and made a small 'oh' sound. So. guy that makes zombies. meet the embodyment of life and rebirth. what, no small talk?
Mizuki     Mizuki likes ruins, but not heat. She's always preferred snowy places, honestly; even if she isn't affected that much by temperature, she tends to prefer cold places aesthetically. All else is secondary, I suppose, but this isn't entirely -unpleasant-. Especially considering the company! She had liked the this 'Phoenix' entity the last time she had come here, and she was looking forward to having the opportunity to see them again. Her approach, however, is leisurely, and she takes her sweet time soaring over the lava pools and rocks below to get to her destination. So leisurely, in fact, that she's a little fashionably late!

But that has never gotten her in that much trouble in the past, and she doubts that it will here. She gently alights on the ground outside of the shrine, taking a few small steps to get inside. When there, she approaches the already gathered group silently, tapping Faruja on the shoulder and immediately offering Phoenix a curtsey. "A pleasure to see you again, naturally." Smile~. No introduction beyond that is given, though. Gonna let Faru talk for now.
Faruja Phoenix floats over to Frederica. "Forget you? You helped drive off the one corrupting my Shrine. How could I forget you? Frederica..." She seems to frown slightly, despite the beak, flames flickering.

"You've been through so much. But you have friends. Never forget that. Fear is something that you can overcome, if you rely on your fiery heart, and the warmth of those who care about you."

Faruja winks to his favorite showoff. Indeed, her new form is an endless amusement to the rat, even /if/ it was quite the shock at first.

He stands up with the help of Ainsley, trying to regain his dignity. Excuse him while he gathers the shards.

"Oh! You're...My. You've changed. Welcome, my fellow Spirit. Forgive me, it has been some time since I have seen a reborn spirit. Can you show me your powers?" Asks the phoenix quite curiously.

Looking to Procyana, the great fire bird flaps her wings. "Oh? You are not from this time. Tell me, why do you do what you do? You seem a talented woman." Questions the bird.

Phoenix oh's a bit as she gazes towards Auron. "My...you were once..." She goes quiet, contemplating. Her flames brighten. "Are you satisfied with the existence you've found? Have you grown...weary of it all?" Those sharp eyes bore into Auron's being, though not unkindly.

An ear twitches. Finna gets a peering from Faruja! Blast it.

"Mmm~. Now /what/ are you? You are not a spirit, however..."

Flying over to Allyn, she chuckles. "I remember you! You are one with the world of beasts, moreso than most mortals. Tell me, why do you assist those of civilization? Do they not enroach upon what you treasure?"

Then, phoenix notes Marrik. For a moment, it's fires blaze. "YOU!" It radiates anger...and then halts. Confusion. Then, Marrik is regarded with utter sorrow.

She floats down, and wraps wings about him. "...You poor child. I...the evil of mortals is truly great. What do you intend, now?"

Though silent thus far, Toph soon may feel the heat of her gaze.

"Why so quiet little one? You..." A wing goes to her shoulder.

Her voice is a whisper. "Running...never solves anything. You have a stalwart soul, as strong and enduring as Golem himself. You must stop, and with the help of those who care for you most, must face your fears and pain. They will not think less of you." Faruja's ear perks. Toph would feel a worried gaze upon her.

Mizuki gets Phoenix's attention. "Ahhh! Yet another spirit graces my Shrine. Oh eloquent one...is it a mere mask you wear? Or do you truly see the world as a mere story?"

Then, the Phoenix flies back to her perch.

"...I do not know how the rogue summoner performed her ritual. However, it is not one that has been known in this age. To end this, you must travel deep beneath the land, and to the great ruins of a long-dead time. But be cautious. All that lay beneath slumber not eternally. The End came for a reason. Caution, and Faith, will see you all through. But do you have the bravery and purpose to risk your lives and souls alike?"

Faruja stands firm. "'Tis mine duty, as Inquisitor, and Summoner." faruja looks to the rest. What of them?
Faruja Phoenix looks to Maya. "Mmm? A holy creature? Are you mortal, or spirit? I have not felt such an aura since Alexan..." She looks to Faruja, and cuts herself off.
Procyana Everyone is getting a bit of attention from the fiery avian at least. That's points right there.

Procyana partially folds her arms, using one to support the other upright to tap a claw to her cheek thoughtfully. How to explain this to a being of phenominal power from 'a different time' as Phoenix put it herself.

Finally she lowers the hand and spreads her arms out a bit, tail swaying behind her a few times. "You could say I fight a corruption of different but similar sorts. I make sure large organizations operate for and supporting of the public, instead of trying to oppress and take advantage of them through economic means. And sometimes," she holds one hand up to put a finger to her temple, thumb up as if the cocked hammer of an old fashioned pistol, "that means taking one leak link out of the chain from the shadows to prevent a massive backlash in the public eye."

She's not trying to butter up the fact that she's occasionally paid to kill people to prevent bigger problems from arrising. It's a fact of job and life for her.
Ainsley     Ainsley turns to regard Phoenix with a surprised gaze. "'Spirit'?" she replies, baffled by how she was addressed. "Oh, certainly not." Or is she? She spends a moment pondering what exactly she's become, and resigns the line of thinking. Instead she pivots in the air somewhat aimlessly as she tries to think of a way to show the Phoenix what she can do. Besides, well, flying around like that.
Once she thinks of something she floats over to Phoenix to float near the firebird, and gently reaches out with a hand. A gust of wind and a few sparks protect her hand from the flame as she gently brushes along the side of the Phoenix's neck. And then she backs off and smiles. "I would rather not overuse my magic, mmh? But thank you for your curiosity."
She then takes the opportunity to hover around and check for any symbols or wards that don't match the rest of the temple, attempting to find some sort of link that she can at least suppress. She knows it's likely a futile effort.
Finna     Finna wasn't sure what to expect of the Phoenix, but this is NOT it. Sure, spirits are said to be aware of things they've never seen, never been told, but THIS is on a level she wasn't expecting it. Ordinarily so certain of things around her, her confidence cracks and is replaced with shock and confusion as her gaze follows Phoenix's commentary from person to person.

Some of what she's getting at, Finna can only guess towards...

"Once mortal, but no longer. I was Chosen to Champion the Moon Goddess of a land far from here. Exalted by her blessing. It--..." The mischief she's so fond of evaporates, leaving only a warm, somewhat childish - impish even - smile.

It's also reminiscent of a deer facing headlights.

"It'sanhonortomeetsuchagrandspirit!" She blurts out all at once, composure utterly destroyed through sheer excitement.
Toph Beifong     The blind girl remains silent as the phoenix addresses the others in the party, listening intently however as she speaks to them in turn. Yet... when the phoenix turns her attention on her, the blind girl's eyes widen, and she tenses. At least until the wing goes to her shoulder, and suddenly the earthbender pulls back, her arms uncrossing as she seems a bit tense. And her eyes widen when the Esper speaks.

Instantly her jawline tightens as a frown crosses her features, and she swallows. Whatever the phoenix meant, it seems like Toph isn't taking it very well. At all. "I didn't come here for a lecture," she says as calmly as she can before she crosses her arms across her chest again, pointedly turning her face away from the Esper. No, cleaning shrines is not something she knows anything about. Not to mention things suddenly became more awkward.
Auron     It's a bit awkward to have a spirit of rebirth point out that he was dead once. But at least she has the grace not to out and say it, even if she might as well have. This is one of the times Auron regrets that he no longer wears his high collar; as he ducks his head, he almost seems to be blushing a little.

What can he do but make a jest of it? "...Is my Farplane showing again?" Yes, he totally did just make a joke. He does that occasionally. However, in answer to Phoenix's question, he notes, "'Existence' and 'living' are two different things. I'm glad to be living now." He keeps it short so he doesn't accidentally interrupt anyone else.

He also looks at Ainsley. Hm. She does look a little different. He'd read the report, but he wasn't sure what to expect. Finna's gushing gets a chuckle, but he doesn't speak. He just imagines how she'd have felt facing Anima. Though his smile falls a little at Toph's reaction. He doesn't chastise her for it, that's not his place. And he sort of understands how she feels. But at least Phoenix isn't as malicious as Seymour.
Finna     "You could fix it!" Finna belatedly aims Allyn's way. "Soooooooo could I, but..."
Mizuki     Her response is sharp, and fairly quick. "I often forget or do not know myself, if I'm being earnest," Her arms fold, "but while I view the world as an artistic masterpiece and people as especially radiant extensions of that lovely sonnet, I do not pay it much heed. I firmly believe that the world and its contents only have the meaning that you assign to them, and I assign it very little." A small exhale. "'Meaning' is rare, but that doesn't mean I don't have the capacity to care for other reasons." She follows the Phoenix as she soars between those present, eventually putting a hand to her cheek.

"Quite insightful, aren't you?" Her tone isn't exactly accusatory, but perhaps a bit... prodding. "Either you're able to glean much from very few interactions with others, or your link to fire allows you to see that which resides in one's soul. Either way, you're quite the interesting little bird." She sighs faintly. "I envy that slightly. I've always wanted to appear so sagely and to be able to comfort others that way. But alas, I think what I envy most of all is your -interest- in others." She shuts her eyes slightly. "It isn't so easy sometimes, getting outside of your own head." But she can at least try. Her effort incarnates in the rapt attention she gives the comments Phoenix makes of others. She might learn something important if she listens close, you know?

To the last thing, her answer is rather simple. "I've never cared or been much swayed by the prospect of danger. I don't think many here truly have." She gives a tiny, tiny smile; perhaps a bit more reserved than those she usually makes, but it's there. "But I do love ruins. So artistic. So somber. So quiet and wistful. It will not be bravery on my part -- just a desire to absorb some of the hymns of life that swim in the stagnant air." She glances to Faruja. "And perhaps, to help a few friends."
Frederica     Apparently not at all afraid of Phoenix's flames, Frederica reaches her hand out to brush lightly the esper's feathers. If the Phoenix permits, that is. It's not simply Frederica trusting in her own power to keep herself unburnt. Her power renders her immune to her own fire only, not to the fires of others. She's no more safe from Phoenix than anyone else. This is more an act of faith than anything else, trusting in Phoenix to be gentle and non-destructive.

Frederica turns to look at Toph, surprised at the girl's outburst. A bit dismayed too. Still, it's her choice, and Frederica supposes she can understand not wanting to be looked down on. If she knew how to help, she'd probably offer to help the little earthbender. She doesn't though, so says nothing. Just looks vaguely unhappy.

She turns back to Phoenix. "I choose to fight evil when I find it." she explains. She frowns then, not sure if she said the right thing. "I mean, I'll fight. To protect the innocent." she tries to clarify. "And that includes fighting for healers, and I would like for my fire to be able to cleanse as well as destroy. I-I would..." she pauses, looks around, flushes somewhat, then continues in a lower voice. Still one anyone can hear, but nonetheless it seems something she considers a bit on the private side. "And at some point, I would like some help. If you can..." she admits quietly.
Allyn Allyn seems to smile at the Phoenix and nods his head as she speaks to h him and he ponders her words a few moments, "They do encroch on it somewhat, I suppose, but I help civilization because those I call my friends and those I care about have things they wish to protect. I wish to protect my friends and do what I can to keep the forces of order and chaos in balance."

He nods again "Helping those friends will help in keeping that balance. I suppose all things must evolve eventually, including civilization. Though I suppose I do somewhat fear change, but sometimes change is needed." he shrugs a litle

The peers at Finna, "yeah, that is true, but I don't feel like it right now, either."
Marrik Marrik made no sound, no answer or explaination for the Phoenix. He merely watched, listened, and was surprised at the creature's pause. A part of him had long ago accepted his past would end up being the death of him and outrunning it was at best a futile gesture. Didn't mean who he was had to be who he is.

The rest? He just looked from one to the other to the other. All people that came because the rat needed, It was good to have friends.
Faruja To Procyana, the Phoenix considers her words. A small curtsey. "Yours is a noble goal. Beware, however. You fight corruption, steeped within its glare. As I myself have come to know, it is a lingering thing even when the root is cut out. Take caution, and ensure that you do not become tainted with the same evil that those you fight are possessed of."

Finna gets a chuckle at her outburst.

"Peace, peace, Chosen! I am but a Servant. I offer wisdom, and healing, to those whom prove worthy. Nothing more. Consider me a guide, oh traveller from afar. Tell me. Why is it that you wander and travel? Do you seek something?"

Toph's reaction earns her a little frown. "But it's one you need. Well, you /are/ of the earth. I should expect it to be this way. Just...realize that others care. And to not let pride push them away. Alone? Even the greatest mountain may as well be a mere fleck of rock."

Phoenix chuckles at Maya. Looking at her, she winks conspiratorially. "...Of course. You've been gifted with power, either way. Use it wisely. Mortal, spirit? Power is a great temptation."

As for Auron? A big, fiery wing reaches over and ruffles his hair. "I think they make a spray for that~." Wink! This Esper isn't without humor.

"But I am glad. There are many who dwell in their original forms, and yet are not truly alive. Yours is a rare chance. Do not waste it. Your own wisdom and experience is something to be passed on. We are kindred, in that sense."

Mizuki gets a thoughtful gaze. "Yours is an interesting perspective. My advice? Share it. Your are an author. A text has no meaning if no one reads it. Perhaps the reasons for caring mean nothing. Only that one cares, and shares in experiences with those we care for."

As for her insight. "Oh, come now! Certainly /you/ understand keeping a bit of mystery~. Let's just say there are rules."

Phoenix allows Frederica's pettings, with what one might imagine a bit of a blush to her fire. It's a very strange sight!

The flames grow brighter, warmer, more welcoming. "You wish to defend and save. Admirable. But can you calm your soul enough to do so?" Asks the Phoenix, eyes again boring into her. Then, she softens.

"...Perhaps you need to look more deeply within yourself." A flap of the wing, and a single feather lands atop Fred's head.

"Study it. And study yourself. Will is more important than inborn powers. First, you must desire to save, above destruction, above vengeance, above anything else."

Allyn gets a nod. "Then you shall be the link between the wild, and the civilized. Chaos, and order. You possess a valuable lesson. Sometimes, Order may be a greater threat than Chaos. That is a lesson you may be able to share in this land."

Marrik only gets a smile. "...You will find peace, if you seek it. There shall be many obstacles. Grow. Change."

Then, Ainsley. The wind has her wiggling, a giggle escaping her. "...How gentle. You possess great power, as you've only now come to realize. Use it. But you possess something even greater. Your heart. There are those close to you who have need of that in these coming days more than perhaps you realize."

The shrine seems remarkably empty. The faintest remains of symbols have been cleansed, those who came to clean the place clearly fearful of any remaining symbols added by the rogue summoner. Still. She does find one inverted cross, above the main door. It radiates dark magic. Should her senses be keen enough? She may get the faint impression that there's a twin. But it's not in the building. No, it feels very, very far away, and underground.
Marrik Given his personal feelings and fears Marrik stepped forward anyway. "If I may?" He gestured to the inverted cross. "I do not know what I can do, but one of the few positives of what I know is this sort of problem." He drew on no power or made any sudden movements. This was the phoenix's home after all and he dare not do anything short of breath without her say so.
Toph Beifong     If Toph knew the others felt pity, then she would most likely be reacting even stronger. Pity is something she snorts at. And for others to tell her what she should do? Now that's even more iffy with the stubborn girl. On and on Phoenix prattles, and Toph closes her eyes where she stands, tense and silent.

Pride? She's confident. Such stupid words...

Are the others really buying into this stuff? This thing is only telling them what they want to hear by the sound of it. Part of her wants to ask Faruja some questions since he got them here... but he also told them to be respectful. Which means that Toph keeps her mouth shut, patiently waiting for this all to be over.
Frederica     Frederica's strong not because of her power but because of her will. Her power is essentially limitless. Along that path lies only destruction however. Destruction of everything around her, and most surely destruction of herself.

That she's managed to survive, that she can fight without destroying herself or others, speaks as surely to Frederica's will as anything else. And yet she has her doubts. She reaches up to the red feather, bringing it down to regard it curiously. A bit in awe, she doesn't immediately speak. Study the feather? And ... and study herself. Yes. It sounds like what Shao might say. Shao who has always been her best teacher, her mentor and guide. She already kind of knows what her flaw is, what keeps her from being able to heal properly... but she isn't sure how she can correct it. If Phoenix says to study herself though, she nods. "I will. But... can I return? Whether or not I find the answer?" she asks. She'd add the question of whether or not she helps... but she's already determined she'll do whatever she can. She wouldn't want to give the impression she's trying to make bargains for her aid.
Ainsley     Ainsley pauses when she spots an upside-down cross above the main door. She reaches out with one hand, as if the dark mana feels... close to her affinity in some way. When she touches it, her body sparks. She frowns at it in a way that suggests she understands what the feeling may be, her hand retreating. Her eyes squint at the cross for a while... and then she reaches to rest her whole hand on it.

There's a pause, a strange sense of energy shifting around her.

And then she drops out of the air, flailing her limbs! Someone better catch her, or she's going to hit the floor in a tangle of limbs and startled lizard. She just suddenly lost her ability to fly for some reason! "AAH--!!" she shouts in fear of the upcoming impact. She's had broken bones before and does not want a repeat of the sensation.
Procyana Procyana lifts a hand to brush some stray red-orange locks out of her face and back to the side of her head. It would be a 'tuck behind ear' motion if her ears weren't on top of her head like the animal she resembles. "Trust me Phoenix, I know. I've seen what happens to those that become what they once thought."
Mizuki     "I prefer not to bother the living with my ideas, if I may speak earnestly." Her arms wraps around her back. "People rarely pay them any heed, and if they do, it is usually to criticize or contradict them." She shakes her head. "That's productive for no-one. Instead, I've taken to seeking out those who share my views so that they may live with me, in a place that makes them happy while all of us work toward common goals." Another smile. "Or simply a place to rest while we all drift on and away, into eternity." The last bit gets a giggle, though. "Certainly, certainly. A hint of ominousness here, a detail omitted there..." She puts a fist to her chin, closing her eyes. "Dragging things out and weaving details into strings that appeal to the eyes and the mind are the only ways for me to accrue any kind of interest, really."

"... though I will say," Her tone is a little quieter now, subdued, "my goal as an author isn't to give prevalence to my own ideas any longer. Rather, I exist to ensure that others can be remembered and live on in the annals of time. I am the one who stands just on the periphery of one's vision. She who, in any given story, is omnipresent; watching, but never speaking. From there, I appreciate the beauty of life, and the melancholy. I write down names and events, and see to it that no one is forgotten, and that those worlds that cease to be are encapsulated in the books of my library." She folds her hands. "In that way, I am one of the Multiverse's preeminent time mages." Smirk~. "I pause worlds forever."

Once she's finished, she takes an interest in Phoenix's interactions with Frederica. They almost make her want to giggle. Almost. And then... Ainsley. She flicks a finger, conjuring a stasis field that will allow certain gallant rats plenty of time to save their beloveds.
Auron     Auron does indeed chuckle at the joke from Phoenix. It feels a little strange to have someone ruffle his hair at his age, but he doesn't pull away. He imagines Phoenix is much older than he is, so it must be the same to her. Besides, his hair's already messy so it's not like it'll get messed up any more. Ultimately he merely nods to her statement of experience. He has things he'd like to talk with her about regarding that. But not here. Not now.

Right now he's more interested in how he can help her fix the shrine. Ainsley's sudden distress has him looking in her direction. He's probably not fast enough to get to her in time, but that doesn't mean he won't /try/ to catch her! He also has healing potions just in case she needs them.
Allyn Allyn nods to Phoenix again and wgs his tail a little, "It wont be an easy task I know and some wont wish to learn such a lesson, but I will do my best." At least that is probably how it will go. He looks to Finna for a moment, "But I think there is someone who will help me in such things." At least that's what he got out of a discussion the two shapeshifters had with one another not too long ago.
Finna     "Ooooof... you cut right to the bone." Finna frowns, recoiling away and bunching up her shoulders. "... weeeell.... it boils down to the Multiverse throwing things for a loop! ... My home nation's a land of ice and snow most of the year, and the world it's from is filled to the brim with chaos and suffering... I'm not sure WHAT I seek out here in these worlds, but I'll know when I find it. Something that can bring my people and our cause an advantage! ... okaysoImight'vegottenworkedupandmadeabigvow..."
Toph Beifong     When Ainsley falls to the floor it doesn't escape Toph's notice, and the blind girl blinks, wincing when she belatedly realized that Ainsley was falling, but the others helped out. So she only sighs. How are they going to fix the shrine? Will she use her earthbending or metalbending? Nothing strikes her as needing to be bended though...
Faruja Phoenix goes silent, looking at Marrik. She considers, and nods. "Be very careful, young one. My nature is one of healing. Show me that your powers, involunary or not, can be used responsibly." The man gets a severe look, her flames burning brighter, harsher for one moment.

Maya and Toph alike gets equal looks, but no more words from the Phoenix. A shake of the head. Mortals.

Phoenix brightens again. "You and I are kindred. Return as you like. But remember. At times, even destruction is necessary. Healing and destruction are two sides of the same coin. Faruja?"

The Summoner bows. "It shall be done, Honored Esper."

Even Phoenix seems surprised as Ainsley plummets! Faruja teleports! That stasis field from Mizuki certainly helps as he catches the lizard!

Only one problem. She's gotten bigger! The rat has grabbed to her waist, and given her new size, there might be a squished rat, stasis field or not. Auron would find himself Hasted from the rat! Group-lizard-catch!

Procyana gets a smile. "Your life shall ever be a dangerous one. Be careful." She cautions.

"Such views are rare, particularly in this land. I fear you'll find few who shall. However, in the vastness of the worlds beyond? Perhaps you shall find yourself amongst many who truly belong with you. There are many worlds, and people, who need such remembrance. And they are not always the ones that history records."

To Allyn, she nods. "Good luck. If you truly wish to teach them, then learn of them. Only mutual understanding shall induce change."

Then, there's Finna. The Phoenix slumps a bit. "...Well. I suppose it is the domain of the young to do things without thinking. Do you regret your vow?"

Faruja considers Phoenix's words, likely after disentangling himself from the combined Ainsley and Auron. Cough.

"Underground, hmm? Ainsley, what was that?" A glance to Marrik, then back to Toph.

"Toph. Methinks we shall require your abilities in the future. Tell me. /How/ deep art ye able to descend into the earth?"
Toph Beifong     It's a good thing Toph can't see that shake of Phoenix's head.

Even as Faruja recovers from catching Ainsley, Toph does hear him talking to her, and she arches an eyebrow at the question. "... I should be able to go fairly deep as long as there's air down there to breathe," she states with a slight shrug. "Why?"

My, it seems somebody is slightly distracted today.
Marrik By the time Marrik had noticed anything was out of the ordinary Ainsley was on the ground. He frowned and sighed, letting Arron help patch the girl and all up. No harm. He shrugged out of his coat, revealing a bright red tunic beneath as his attention fixed on the cursed artifact. As his hands moved power gathered at his fingers. "I am going to first attempt to weave a cage around it to try finding how it is connected to everything else," He explained as life wove deft and intricate patterns around the cursed thing. He hadn't much to work on compared to when he fought, but this was intricate work rather than needing the raw sledgehammer summoning an army needed. His motions were practiced and smooth as his body moved along. To someone that only heard of bending they might confuse it for such, but those that had seen the real thing? Looked like someone trying without knowing.

Yet Marrik let the world fall away as he worked and instead focused on where the artifact would push most strongly against his cage. Instead of trying to sever those connections he traced along them, and where those connections met others and on as far as he could. Then, assuming the litterally damned Thing didn't blow the weave apart a final flex of his left thumb would cause his weave, which he hoped wpuld trace the corruption, to glow soft to show everyone else what he saw.
Ainsley     Ainsley, after getting over the embarrassment of the brief spill she just experienced, makes a face of confusion, and discovers that she can't bring herself back up to flight again. She pats Faruja's cheek once, steadying herself but not placing her weight against him. Auron is given a pat on the shoulder. "Thank you," she says, gently. She scrunches her brow, the shift of mana bewildering her.
"That marker," she says, pointing up at the reason for her drop, "It is a beacon for the dark mana corrupting this place. However, it would be best to find the source and the corresponding marker, and purify that location." She shakes her head once, resting a hand to her face. She looks over at Toph, briefly. "We will need a masterful earthbender to help us reach the source of this blight," she tells Toph, "I hope we can rely on your skills." She does sound hopeful, and friendly.

But she puffs a breath, and places her hands on her hips, after that. She looks up at the cross in consternation. She doesn't seem to understand what's wrong.

Those attuned to dark mana might note that her mana affinity made a drastic shift and that's why she can't fly. She seems to be attuned to blood, or life, which is a combination of pure and dark mana. Marrik, in particular, might note how similar it is to blood mages or necromancers. But it's not impure. Phoenix would know the difference instantly.
Auron     Auron's sort of made for tanking hits. Though he /does/ have the combined weight of Ainsely and Faruja impacting with him. It's less that he catches them both and more that he acts as a cushion. Faruja, though, might find it unpleasant though, since he'd essentially be being smushed between Ainsely and Auron if he's not careful.

For his part, Auron would probably get the wind knocked out of him, but he'll stand up when he can. "Are you both all right?" he inquires.
Finna     "....." For a few very protracted moments, Finna's just staring at the Phoenix. The nervousness that consumed her is evaporating, and now she's just left with a disturbing sensation between them... as if Phoenix is far too similar to her mother.

She glances around the room in an exaggerated fashion, sparing Faruja and Allyn the most attention before planting a hand on her hip and sprouting this AMAZINGLY childish grin at Phoenix. "... not yet!"

But by that point, she's zipped behind Allyn and has started tickling him, despite wolf form. She knows all the secret places you can tickle a wolf for best effect!
Allyn Allyn nods to Phoenix as she speaks to him again and he continues to look at Finna, especially when she darts behind him. What does she think that she is doing? using him to hide behind? He's not sure that he'd make a very good hiding spot, well, maybe if he were a little bigger that'd be a little different. But no, it doesn't seem that she is going to use him as a hiding spot.

He yelps in surprised as Finna begins to tickle him, it's not fair, she knows all of those ticklish spots! darn shapeshifters, knowing each others secrets. He squirms and writhes on the ground, trying to get away from her. Ok, well not really trying to get away, he growls playfully at her and wriggles his legs in the air. He then tries to playfully snap at her hands, "I'm going to get you, just you wait!"
Procyana By this point most of the attention is on other people, so Procyana is just hanging out in the background. She's good at doing that, it's kind of part of her job at times. No need to make things even more awkward for certain people.
Mizuki     Mizuki bows her head to Phoenix, closing her eyes. "Such views are seldom heard in most lands, I fear. People have their own problems and things to consider. Distractions that keep them from considering what, if anything, comes when and if 'global peace' has been ascertained." She raises her gaze to her again. "I exist to answer that question. I exist so that, when the necessity of heroes and villains and the notions of right-wrong have all left the world, that there will still be something of value left." Her expression is... rigid.

"But truly? When you look beyond it all, people bore quickly. Adversity is a biological and psychological necessity for living things, and when you take it out of the equation completely, balance is lost. I would like it very much if that balance wasn't necessary, and if I could find a new sort of consciousness, or a broader system of thought that people could use. It is to this end that I dedicate much of my spare time for research." She exhales. "But that's quite enough ranting for one evening."

"Though I very much agree, you know," She nods her head, "that those 'worth remembering' are seldom heard of. My primary focus is on the dreamers, and I have a particularly large place in my heart for the sick and the lonely, and those who appreciate the simpler, finer points of nature. I record their stories, be they interactions with more innocent animals or things so simple as watching the sun fall at dusk. Those are simply the things that appeal to me." She smiles again. "Far more so than wars over petty and inane misunderstandings that repeat themselves incessantly."

Oh, and when she gets a moment, she glances to Aisnley and nods. Not so much a gesture to her so much as it is confirmation for herself that she is alright. She cares sometimes.
Faruja Toph gets a slight glare from the rat, before he remembers it's useless. Ainsley beats him to it.

"Quite. If we art to cleanse the shrine, my dear, we shall need to reach the ruins of the great Calamity that befell this world many, many years ago." A nod. No matter what she's facing, Faruja trusts Toph to get things done. Young or not, she's proven herself to him.

Phoenix watches Marrik work. The ancient Esper gasps, clearly having never seen such a thing. She seems fascinated. The cage works flawlessly. Severing the connection by Marrik only makes it glow brighter, and brighter, Faruja soon falling to his knees and heaving in a corner. Someone's sensitive to this stuff.

To the south and east. It's all Marrik gets. But there's a /very/ strong impression of the direction. Strangely, it may well stay with him, and those either sensitive to, and partially aligned to that particular element, such as Ainsley.

Then, the cage explodes. Phoenix rushes over, and with a wave of her wing, burns away the symbol into dormancy. She gasps.

"...A good attempt." She admits, before settling into her perch. She seems /tired/.

Then, Faruja finally smiles to Ainsley, and then Auron. Squeak! Even being squished is better than being squashed by his lover. He doesn't like that sort of irony.

"Q...quite alright Ser Auron. Mine thanks."

A quick peck on Ainsley's cheek!

As for Finna? Phoenix just chuckles, and winks at her. Oh yes, the great Phoenix likes this one.

Phoenix considers Mizuki's words. "My, someone's quite the philosopher! Comes from being old, I suppose. Peace...Ivalice is no better an example. This land, once 'reset', even now struggles under the weight of strife. Will it end? Or will history repeat itself, all wiped clean? No matter what, continue what you do. Ivalice needs someone to watch over it, and learn of all that is done, both secretly and openly. A tragic play that has yet to be ended. And may never end."

Faruja stands, finally. He looks a bit weak at this point, likely due to the unholy magic about.

"If ye shall excuse me, mine friends. Honored Esper...I..." A gentle wing upon the rat's shoulder.

"Rest, young Summoner. I shall see to your friends." With a bow to all, the rat makes his way out, decidedly weakly.
Toph Beifong     Perhaps it's a skill she's picked up, as Toph lets out a slight snort when Faruja gives that brief glare. But she does not. "If somebody can do it, it's me." At least she's as confident as ever, right? And she /is/ the greatest earthbender of all time. "Just let me know when." Most likely it will not happen immediately as there's always something or another that needs to be prepared.

But at least it will give her something to do. It's always easier when you can focus on doing stuff, at least for somebody of her mindset.

Just ignore the slight face she makes when Faruja pecks Ainsley's cheek. She doesn't handle oogies all that well either.
Finna     "Whenever you're brave enough to try!" Finna retorts with a last little barrage of tickles.

"Ugh, we're going even deeper? IN this heat? I wonder if anything more used to the heat lives down here..." Her ears flatten out amidst one of the loudest grumbly noises she's made in a while.
Marrik When the cage exploded Marrik sighed. "Why is it," He paused to put his coat back on in spite of the heat, "It's always the crazy ones that are geniuses at this sort of stuff?" Still, he had a direction and without realizing it was staring south east. Then he frowned and realized which way he was pointed and walked to the appropriate wall. "I'd rather go load up before we go in, but at least we know where to start." He pulled a water bottle from his pocket and took a drink. "Might earn my keep yet," Soft chuckle, very soft. He was actually still at low ebb so that his cage had even temporarily worked had been unexpected.
Allyn Allyn squirms as he gets tickled still and then shifts to his human form and sits up and tickles Finna a little and then pets her flattened ears. "Yeah there are fire ant things and stuff like that.. Maybe you should go hunt some and maybe you can come up with a way to deal with the heat? You'd make a cute fire ant thing." he teases Finna with a grin. Yeah, he's probably going to be glared at for that one. "I'll probably just have to deal with the heat."
Finna     "Mrrrooogh...." Yup, Finna's suffered revenge for that assault sooner than expected. She's UTTERLY stopped with the cutesy, the mischief, the arrogance and the recklessness since encountering Phoenix... at least for now.

So Allyn just gets this sort of sulky, twisted glare .
