Taro     Sometime overnight, word was passed to Zarenna by way of Ferham and Kari that Taro was asking for Zarenna to see him in Neo Arcadia. The original message would have included that he had suffered battle injuries and that this is a good opportunity for her to gain some hands-on experience with advanced reploid repairs. Only the CyberGoddess knows what the message sounded like by the time it reached her ears, though...
He may have also miffed some of his own by specifically asking for her when there is a surefit of qualified roboticists here already, but he does not particularly care. He's already having to suffer the indignity of wearing a hospital gown, therefore the others can survive a few bruised egos.
Directions would have followed the message at some point, along with a guide to meet Zarenna (and Kari and Harriet if they tagged along) at the warpgate. By the time they arrive at hospital, the android priest has already been berthed in a repair suite and mostly cleaned up. He's lying on his side so as to not rest weight on his back, his hair is washed but untidy mess across the pillow propping his head, but more importantly his right arm has been removed at the elbow joint and capped off pending its replacement. His left hand is bound up in an antistatic mitten that doesn't quite match the sheet laid over him in as much protection as to reclaim some dignity.
Kari Wolf     Zarenna does indeed have Kari and Harriet in tow. Kari is nestled in the lab coat pocket with the hare familiar while Harriet is perched on the woman's shoulder. Pulled along in a large luggage cart thing is a raft of tools that Zarenna doesn't normally use; she specializes in micro-robotics after all and these tools are mostly too large to work on the likes of Harriet or Kari. Well, honestly they range in scale, which is why they're in a luggage case. Security is free to inspect the contents of course, but the truth is that the tools are either awful for being a weapon or hideously dangerous. Such is the nature of industrial tools.
Zarenna enters the room. "... I see that android hospitals aren't any better about patient dignity than human hospitals." she says. Harriet seems to be taking in the new environment around them, possibly in case of attack.
Kari waves to Taro from the pocket and says "Hi Taro!"
Taro     The case would have been given a cursory inspection back at the warpgate - the guide that brought her here also helped her navigate city security by vouching for her and her purpose for the tools. His rank does have its privileges.
Taro opens his eyes as the door opens, then nods to the trio in greeting. "A byproduct of equal treatment, I suppose. Hello. You'll excuse me if I don't get up." His dry humor seems to have survived, at least.
His gaze then shifts to the luggage cart-sized pack that Zarenna brought along. "Ah. If you find yourself in need of a tool that you do not have, there are plenty in the drawers over there." He gives a nod in the direction of them on the side of the room that the head of his repair table faces. "If you wave your hand in front of the holomonitor, it will turn on for you."
The room appears to be 100% Assassin free. But he appreciates Harriet's vigilence.
Kari Wolf     Nevertheless, Harriet is keeping an eye out for attack avenues and escape routes in case something happens! She and her familiar end up settling on the bedside table.
Zarenna ahs. She waves her hand in front of the biomonitor. "I have to confess that I'm more familiar with the interfaces at the Citadel. I might be a little slow because of it." She turns to undo the rolling case only to find that Kari has hopped out and undone it, the whole thing unfolding into a toolchest type thingy on wheels. "... Thank you Kari."
Taro     The best avenue for egress would be the door they passed through - it is a repair suite, after all, so doorways are kept to a minimum. Though it's possible that someone of her size could pass through the air vent or the drop ceiling...
The holomonitor blinks to life, briefly displaying the hospital logo before switching over to the display of Taro's vital signs. Core is fully intact and functional, right forearm cannot be located, left hand 45% functional, 10% myomer fiber shear along upper back. His schematics are in the corner for her to expand and examine at her leisure.
"You are here to learn," Taro points out in response. "I know your experience thus far has been with shinki, but I think you'll do well enough with us larger mechanical lifeforms once you have some experience."
Kari Wolf     Zarenna sighs. "At least you didn't lose your head. Now where are those spare parts?" She is saying the last to herself as she glances around the repair bay and starts gathering the parts she needs. She asks Kari and Harriet to get the smaller parts from the bins, the stuff they can carry. The shinki divide the labor; Kari is calling out parts while Harriet gets them (due to her larger size and greater strength). Soon there is an array of parts needed to reconstruct Taro's missing arm laid out.
Taro     "Thankfully," Taro agrees. "That is a terrible pain to replace."
He lies there quietly as the trio gather all of the necessary parts, offering locations as needed if they cannot find something right away. He also keeps a watchful eye on what's brought out for assembly, just in case a bit or bob is forgotten. While trying to not sound too patronizing, he does say, "If you have any questions, please ask. I designed this shell, and so I know its quirks."
Kari Wolf     Zarenna nods to Taro. "The first thing I'm going to do is assess which components are damaged and remove them." She means the parts that were damaged by the severing. "Do you have any pain sensors or the like that need to be turned off?" Well, it's polite to ask.
Meanwhile the shinki seem to be playing chess with each other.
Taro     "All right," Taro answers with a small nod, followed by, "I have them, yes, though I already switched them off at the elbow. It was becoming rather uncofmortable." He could ignore the sensation for only so long after his arm's less than expert removal.
He keeps half an eye on Zarenna, while also keeping half an eye on her daughters. They're a pleasant distraction. "I'm glad to see that the two of you get along so well," he remarks. Pause. "Is that a legal chess move?"
Kari Wolf     Kari uhhhs. "Yes! It's something Harriet found and calls 'castling'!" Harriet looks lost in concentration, staring at the holographically projected chess board atop her familiar.
Zarenna nods. "I wasn't sure if reploids could turn them off when they wanted. It's better to ask than assume. Alright then!" She starts systematically testing and removing the damaged parts or non-functional ones, being meticulous about it.
"I have to ask why you wanted me to perform your repairs. There has to be experts on reploids in Neo Arcadia."
Taro     "Ah." Somehow he's not surprised that Harriet has taken up the game, but Kari's interest is unexpected. He'll keep that thought to himself for now, since he'd hate to interrupt their concentration further. Intead, Taro looks back to Zarenna as she bsgins testing.
His bad pun of disarming was true, since his right arm is simply gone from the elbow down. The good news at least is that the joint coupling is undamaged, and the connectors for his myomer musculature are mostly intact. One does need replacing, and another is iffy, but the others appear to be fine. If she's checking his left hand as well, it's been sliced cleanly down to the skeleton from about his thumb and across his palm - it could almost be mistaken for a terrible kitchen accident.
"There are, yes. However, I find your work to be excellent, and as I said, it seems to be a good opportunity to expand your skillset as a roboticist."
Kari Wolf     Zarenna sighs as she sees the left hand. "Girls, would you please gather up the parts for a new hand? It looks like Bishop Daisho is going to need a new left." The shinki glance up from the game. They save their place and read up on the parts needed for a new left hand, setting about gathering the much smaller parts as necessary. Kari is humming quietly but cheerfully as she helps.
In the mean time, Zarenna is removing the damaged parts of the hand as well. This is definitely more delicate work and the kind of work she is more used to. She has even donned a magnifying face-mask thing to help with the work. She's not bad for a human in that regard. "I trained in general robotics, but I specialize in micro-robotics. I just find the work more rewarding than standard cybernetics and industrial robotics. There's no finesse in industrial armatures and the designs for cybernetics like your arm are pretty standardized."
Taro     Taro's hand is rather intricate, but then the degree of manual desterity he has requires no less. There are also a number of highly sensitive sensors intigrated into his palms and fingertips. Perhaps that's why he wears gloves so much of the time?
"Ah. I see...well, I apologize if you find me boring by comparison." He holds extremely still as she strips away the shorn and damaged bits. "Still, I thought if you planned to continue exploring new shinki designs, it wouldn't hurt for you to get better aquainted with this level of robotics technology." He makes a sidelong glance of Kari as the shinki delivers parts, but since he doesn't know whether Zarenna's said anything about a new body, he does not mention that.
"Have you studied AI architecture at all, or are you interested only in physical hardware?"
Kari Wolf     Zarenna comments idly as she removes a fragged piece of tiny servo from the damaged hand, "Primarily the hardware. If I was any good at cognitive architecture, I'd have uploaded myself into a cybernetic body already."
Since the shinki are still getting the hand parts, Zarenna starts with the missing length of arm, starting with the base frame/skeleton parts. After she gets the servoes and myomers for the forearm hooked in, she says "Alright, if you could test the new connections for me, we can see if I missed anything or got something hooked up wrong." to Taro.
Taro     Taro raises his eyebrows slightly at Zarenna's remark, since tilting his head would cause too much movement. "Mm...you've considered augmentation then?" It's not quite idle curiosity behind that question.
He grunts almost silently as she fastens the new arm-frame into place, not out of pain, really. More like the sound one makes when bumped into. His gaze shifts over to her as she restrings fiber (it's a heavier grade than what's in Harriet, of course, but the technique is the same), showing remarkable composure for someone who's being operated upon. Once she's done, he says in an almost absent tone, "Beginning self-check sequence." He flexes and rotates his wrist insofar as he can without a hand, and afterwards his elbow. The motions are a bit stiff and jerky, but he reports, "All connections are operational."
Kari Wolf     Zarenna nods and starts attaching the whole right hand. Much simpler than replacing the broken parts, but Zarenna was definitely a waste nothing type of person. The hand is calibrated carefully, with a few key components replaced to meet with Taro's specs; a few touches of superconductor-based servoes here and there, pico-amperage governors to add precision to the motion, the tiny sensors necessary for feedback.
"My world already practices some moderate genetic augmentation. Mostly corrective things like eye-sight and genetic disorders. Nothing designer though. Mostly I've considered getting my hands replaced with somthing similar to your own."
Taro     Another near-silent grunt as his hand is slid into the wrist, but then falls quiet again so as to not distract her as she makes all of the necessary conntections.
"I see," Taro says during a pause in her work. "There's no shame in improving yourself in such a way. Should you decide to do more than consider, I would be happy to assist."
As she calibrates, he closes his eyes so that he can better focus on the sensory feedback. "Hm...yes, that's much better."
Kari Wolf     Zarenna starts applying whatever passes for 'skin' on a reploid to the replaced left arm parts. "I'm still undecided." She intones.
She glances at the table, where both Kari and Harriet have laid out the replacement right hand parts in a giant exploded view of the hand. They've hung a coil of myomer on one of the side hooks as well. Harriet is reading something or another, while Kari seems to be trying to put together a tiny hand out of scraps from Taro's right. Zarenna smiles. "Thank you, Kari and Harriet."
Taro     Taro makes a sound that's probably acceptance of her choice, then again holds extremely still as Zarenna applies synthskin over it all.
He opens his eyes again as he hears her words of thanks, and looks over to see what Kari and Harriet have been doing. "Productive," he says in a tone that makes it a compliment. "Yes, thank you. I appreciate your help in being made whole again."
Kari Wolf     The repairs to the left hand take a little while. It's a bit more delicate work, and Zarenna has to redo several parts.
"Hm..." Zarenna says as she pokes about with a diagnostic tool. "... Looks like a governor blew when it was hit and damaged some parts further down from it." She repairs the hidden damage, largely some frayed myomer and wonky servos. After more time passes, the hand is finished. "Alright, let's see the diagnostic test on that hand, Bishop."
Taro     "The Assassin bit me deeper than I thought," Taro says, tone mildly irritated. At the one who attacked him - none of it is directed at the three of them, of course. Then, in that same absent tone as before, "Beginning self-check sequence." He touches thumb to each fingertip, beginning with the pinky, then follows through with flexing his wrist and his elbow. Then, a small flick of his wrist that triggers the knife sheath secreted away within that arm, though since that was emptied, all that happens is a soft 'click' of the mechanism. "All connections reporting as operational," he reports, facts supported by the holomonitor's readout.
Kari Wolf     Zarenna looks at the readout after Taro is done flexing (as it were). "Are there any stiffness or coordination issues associated with replacement parts? I mean, do you need time to adjust to the new parts?"
Kari hops onto Zarenna's shoulder and climbs up on top of the woman's purplish-green hair, eliciting motions of bemused irritation from the human. "All better, Mister Taro?" She cheerfully asks.
Taro     Taro balls his hand into a fist, then unclenches it. "There is some stiffness," he answers, "but that's to be expected. A nanite treatment, followed by a full reset will complete the integrations. Since this is merely a replacement and not an upgrade, adjustment time should be minimal."
The readouts look very good, definitely within normal operational tolerances. There's a couple of flutters here and there as he moves, but nothing that suggests anything's imporoperly functioning.
The corners of his lips twich faintly upward as he chuckles quietly at Kari, and reaches out with his freshly repaired hand, palms up. "Much better. Zarenna does good work, just as I expected. Thank you for helping her. You as well, Harriet."
