Scene #4715: The Less Lonely Gem

Rose Quartz	Thank goodness that nice Greg fellow sprang for the extra-large bath-tub! It's so comfy, and even two gems of Rose's size can fit in it! Which is why she's there with Lapis now, washing the other gems hair while Lonely Blade (the original) plays on the TV screen that was recently installed in it. "I don't get this. Has Steven explained to you why this man with the sword is so angry?"
Lapis Lazuli	Lapis Lazuli nodded. "Yes. I do believe that he is angry because he has no one in his life and suffers deep depression caused by extreme loneliness. It likely doesn't help that everyone he cares about dies within thirty minutes of meeting them." She glanced back. "Are you certain that this... washing thing is necessary? I don't exactly get dirty much."
Steven Universe	On a bright sunny day near Beach City, under the watchful protection of the Temple Lady sits the home of Steven and the Crystal Gems. It is a simple house, with lots of open space and a loft bedroom without walls, and in that loft bedroom usually rests a TV with attached video game (currently absent), a scattering of toys neatly organized on shelves and in a chest, a small but comfortable bed with attached Steven sleeping peacefully. The events of the last few days have been somewhat tiring after all. And yet, as the familiar sounds of a beloved TV show (and video game) echo through the house, Steven stirs from his slumber. With a stretch and a yawn, he becomes semi-aware of his surroundings and more directly aware of a pressing personal need. He makes his way to the bathroom, only to find the door closed. He knocks confusedly, still not fully used to the idea that anyone but him actually uses this room... "Umm, hello? Is someone in there?"
Rose Quartz	"Steven! Come on in," comes Rose's voice. "Lapis and I were just watching the first Lonely Blade movie." she says from inside. "And yes, the washing is part of your punishment. You'll sometimes need to do things that you think are unneeded or boring. It's also good for bonding with your teammates. I remember the first day that Pearl found out about germs. Oh you should have seen the look on her face!"
Lapis Lazuli	Lapis Lazuli nodded, giving a sigh. She then glanced to the door. "Steven? Oh! Do you require assistance?" she asked, giving him a smile. "Rose is washing my hair." She then paused. "What are germs?" Oh, right. Explain THOSE to lapis. THAT will go well. "But washing ones hair is a waste of time and energy. I don't even particulalry like hair. Water always gets messed up in it. Though it does help to store it...."
Steven Universe	Okay, Rose and Lapis are in the bathroom. At least no one has locked him out? He enters and pauses just inside, uncertain how to parse the scene and rocking from foot to foot. "Oh, um yeah, that was the best one! But um, are you going to be finished soon? I... kinda need to go..."
Rose Quartz	"Steven..." Rose says with a confused look on her face. "You... You just got here. Why are you leaving?" she asks as she gets a small blue bucket and dumps water over Lapis' hair to wash the suds out. "Now hold still so I can brush out your hair. MMmmmm... Maybe you should grow it out a little. I think your hair would be lovely if we put it in a ponytail."
Lapis Lazuli	Lapis Lazuli nodded, watching his dance. Then nodded. "Oh. Go ahead, Steven. I don't mind. Don't worry about the smell, I already think you humans smell weird as it is. Let me know if you require assistance." She sighed and shrugged. "Really? I considered having hair like yours when I reformed, but I preferred this. But I guess PEarl prefers long hair too..." She said in mopey tone.
Steven Universe	Steven desperately considers, embarrassment of using the restroom with his mom in the room giving Lapis a bath (which he is carefully Not Looking in the direction of the bathtub just in case), versus the embarrassment of making a mess that he will then have to clean up before Pearl comes home... Aaaand then Lapis actually says it out loud, and the embarrassment is truly begun. "Ummm, nevermind. Just um, don't look for a minute?" Boy, it suddenly sure is a good thing there are already loud water splashing sounds in the room to at least cover the audio track. One of the more embarrassing minutes of his life later, he is washing his hands, much relieved, fully clothed and still Not Looking in the direction of the bathtub.
Rose Quartz	"Well, I think you're beautiful just the way you are, and Pearl feels the same way. But we ARE shape-shifters. I think you should try long hair for a while. Just to see how it feels." she says, utterly disinterested in what Steven's doing. "Why, we could even trade! I'll mimic your hair style, and you can mimic mine!" she says.
Lapis Lazuli	Lapis Lazuli blinked and then... "I suppose. We could try that. Wow, humans have such strange things. Can all humans shoot water from their waists?" Oh, poor steven. Poor, poor steven. She glanced by. "I... suppose. But my shape shifting isn't very... good. Hold on." She takes a deep breath and closes her eyes. Focusing and, slowly, her hair begins to grow out. It grows wild... it's soon bigger than her. She turned into a saiyan!
Steven Universe	Steven accidentally notes in the mirror that both gems are in fact clothed, and breathes a sigh of relief. That is a level of teenage thought he is still not prepared for! But then, come to think of it he has never seen any of the Gems unclothed, and the clothes are actually part of the body of light they create so it doesn't matter anyway, why was he even concerned about that at all? Ah well, such complicated thoughts and feelings can wait for another day. So lost in thought he is, that he almost doesn't catch Lapis' embarrassing question, and simply blushes brightly in response. "Oh wow! That's... a lot of hair! You should try brushing it, sometimes Pearl brushes my hair and it feels really soothing. It used to get caught in the brush but not anymore. Anyway, it's really nice." Yup, casual conversation about an entirely different subject, that's the ticket!
Rose Quartz	"He's right you know." she says, getting out a comb and a brush as her own hair shortens notably. She was serious about mimicking Lapis' hairstyle. It's unusual, her neck not having the strain of ten pounds of hair on it. She starts brushing and combing Lapis's hair, eager to tame it before it totally dries out. It takes her a minute to realize... "Steven can shoot water from his waist?" she says, her eyes wide. "Steven! That's a new gem power even I don't have! Oh I'm so proud of you!" she exclaims, reaching over to hug him.
Lapis Lazuli	Lapis Lazuli nodded and then blushed. "A... Steven, you have water powers? That's not a human thing? What other powers do you have? Can you demonstrate for the others later? Perhaps we can combine them! Does your little human friend know? The one you fused with?" Oh by the stars, that poor boy. Though, she did smile at him. "Also, Steven, do you like this hair?" She shakes her head and disappears in her hair. "Ack! It's dark! Save me!"
Steven Universe	Stunned into utter paralysis by a single phrase, Steven is hugged and at a complete loss for words. "Ack, er... um... but..." A moment to recover what wits remain, and he just plain gives up on dignity. "It's just a human thing. We eat, we drink, we process food and then we use the toilet. It's not a power, and it's usually kind of a private and embarrassing thing."
Rose Quartz	Rose Quartz smiles as she peels Lapis' hair back. "Easy there, Lapis." she says, taking comb and brush to the wee gem's hair, curling it slowly. "There, you look wonderful." she says, setting Lapis on her feet outside of the tub and standing up herself. She pulls Lapis' hair back and puts in a headband to keep it steady while the curls dry.
Lapis Lazuli	Lapis Lazuli nodded and had to lean forward super far as to not fall over. "How do you walk with hair like this?" To be fair, Rose was... a very stable woman. Lapis was... well, she was tiny, stick like, and VERY unstable. In more ways than one. She had to hold the wall as she walked, before sitting by the table. "I see. Well, it is an interesting power, Steven."
Rose Quartz	"Hmmm... I have had a lot of practice, and I used to wear my hair short before the rebellion. All it takes practice." she says. "Hmmm... Maybe I could braid it! Like that girl in Connie's book! Unfamiliar Familiar, I think? Didn't Lisa braid her hair to avoid the government for a while?"
Lapis Lazuli	Lapis Lazuli shrugged and shook her head. "I... don't know? I never learned how to read human. Is it any good?" she asked, looking up at her. "And if you wish, go ahead. Will it hurt when I turn it back to normal?" She'd pretty much given up. It was her fate to be Rose's barbie doll it seemed.
Rose Quartz	Rose isn't really doing it to make Lapis uncomfortable. She just doesn't understand WHY anyone wouldn't want to be fussed over and pampered. "No it won't. It will just unravel when you turn it to light." she says as she starts to straighten the hair and slowly braids it with beads and jewelry.
Lapis Lazuli	Lapis Lazuli never said she disliked it. In fact, she quite liked being fused over and pampered. She closed her eyes and leaned back against Rose. Honestly, it kind of reminded her of when Rose owuld do this for Pearl, when she was just a mirror and... had to... sit there and... and watch it. Just lay there. Helpless. Watching them live their lives and-- She shuddered and hugged herself, moving a little closer to Rose. She needed a hug. She realllllly needed a hug. Or a Steven. She looked around, grabbed Steven, squeeze hugged.
Rose Quartz	Well Lapis, today you can have both! As she watches Lapis squeeze Steven, Rose makes an intuitive leap... And hugs the little blue gem. "It's okay. What happened wasn't your fault, and it's okay to feel sad. You're here now, and that's what's important. I'm sorry, for what happened." she murmurs as she starts to fold Lapis' hair over itself. "Just hold still a little longer."
Lapis Lazuli	Lapis Lazuli nods and closes her eyes. "Right. Of course. Just... just need to be calm. It's all over now." She was still for a little bit, still holding steven. Then she looked down. "Do you think Pearl will like it?" she asked softly. "Or Peridot? Steven, do you like it?" He was probably still in brain lock mode from the whole peeing thing.
Steven Universe	Steven is still a little stunned as the two Gems discuss hair, but after a bit decides it's not even a big deal, right before Lapis hugs him. Now that, that's a pretty great deal. He likes hugs! "I do like it, Lapis. It's fun to change things a bit sometimes. My hair doesn't change a lot, but I bet I could if I tried. I just never really thought about it before. Maybe I'll try that some time." Steven is still obviously a little uncertain about his shapechanging ability.
Rose Quartz	"Of course Pearl will like it. You know Pearl, loves everything Big. Big Hair. Big Gems. Big heart." she says, poking Steven's tummy a little. "So Steven," she says after a moment. "Can you explain Lonely Blade to me? He always seems very upset and unhappy."
Lapis Lazuli	Lapis Lazuli blinked and then her eyes widened. "O-oh! I never showed you my attempt to change me, did I? I... visited this strange shop and she said I should try to... find myself." She blinked a few times. "And gave me new clothes. Would you like to see? Perhaps once she finishes with the hair?"
Steven Universe	"The Lonely Blade is... Well, I mean, he was the lone survivor of a major war, and now he's trying to make up for all the bad stuff from the war by saving a thousand people, one at a time, and he can't let himself settle down anywhere and make friends because then he'd stop travelling asaving people." Steven nods, pretty sure he covered the basics. "You got new clothes Lapis? That sounds fun, I'd love to see them!" He grins brightly, excited at some everyday sort of fun, just enjoying his family and not at all thinking about any embarrassment of a bit ago.
Rose Quartz	"And I would love to see your new clothes! Clothes always startled me when I first learned about them. Imagine, appearance modifiers that aren't attached to your body! I'd never even HEARD of such a thing!"
Lapis Lazuli	Lapis Lazuli nodded and then got up, her hair done. She did a little spin, her gem glowing. Her dress disappeared and, in its place, a purple kimono appeared. It had black snow flakes and a snowy sky-gray sash around the waist. As she twirled slightly, water sparkled around her. Once she finished her hands folded in front of her and she looked up. "Do... you like it?"
Steven Universe	"Oh wow... So pretty, that would totally fit in with the Lonely Blade! Look, some of the characters wear clothes that look like that!" He points at the TV screen, which he just now realized is probably closer to the tub than is a good idea, something Pearl warned him about a long time ago. But on the screen a woman in a white flowery kimono is speaking to Lonely Blade. "I always thought those looked really pretty, it's one of the things I like about the show."
Rose Quartz	"Whoa..." Rose says... For once in her life, Rose appears to have nothing to say. Lapis' little magical girl transformation into an Oriental Beauty has given the Big Gem Mama a bad case of being tongue-tied.
Lapis Lazuli	Lapis Lazuli blushed and looked down at steven. She gently reached up and put a hand to her cheek. "You... really think it's... pretty?" she asked softly. Then looked to Rose. She took the silence... poorly. "You dis approve?" She looked down and gently hugged herself. "Do... you think... Pearl... wouldn't like it?"
Steven Universe	"I bet Pearl would love it too! It's pretty and kind of formal and neat, and she likes things pretty and tidy and neat." He nods, certain of himself.
Rose Quartz	"No... nonono. I just... Wow, you look fantastic." she says, her cheeks very pink and, dare I say it, rosy? Yeah, I do dare say it. Rose is quite smitten with KimonoLapis. "I just... I can't, you look great!" she says. It's obvious where Steven got his nervous stuttering around people he likes.
Lapis Lazuli	Lapis Lazuli blinked and then her cheeks went even redder. Her hands lightly fidgetted in front of her. Her hair blew behind her, larger than her. Oh my gosh, she had become a weeb. "Y-you... really think that? I-I look... fantastic? Do you think this would be a good... me? Then? For me to... become? For me to find?" she asked softly.
Steven Universe	"I think you're pretty great exactly the way you are, Lapis. And I think you're great dressed like this too, or however you like, really. Because it's you that makes you fantastic." He borrows the word his mom used because it really seemed to make her happy. "Changing clothes and hairstyles and stuff, that's fun, and can change the way you look, but I don't think you need to "find" you. Just, have fun exploring you!"
Rose Quartz	"Yeah, what Steven said. What you look like isn't as important as who you are. Gosh, I remember when Pearl first started going through that Samurai phase of hers. She was all 'honor this' and 'ritual suicide that'. Of course, it didn't mean a great deal, but this was back when Homeworld was still sending the occasional sortie... We had a long, hard talk about the price of failure, and that poofing yourself was NOT the right way to do it."
Lapis Lazuli	Lapis Lazuli nodded. "Oh, yes. Pearl was always talking about that with me. How she needed to fight and protect you, it didn't matter if she got shattered so long as you didn't get hurt," she muttered with annoyance. She then blushed and smiled to Steven. She then gave another little spin. "Hee hee. I... i think I like this. This... changing. Exploring. What else do you think I should try next?"
Steven Universe	"You could try a big lacy dress, or a cool tux and tophat, or maybe like a sports uniform, or a tee-shirt and shorts like me, you could try em all! There's a whole world of ideas for clothes and hair out there. One time, I did a talent show thing in a light blue top and skirt with makeup and everything! That was really fun, and kinda funny too! I think it made Sadie feel a lot better after I pushed her to sing on stage. Just, she was so good..." Steven rambles, his mind going off on tangents as it sometimes does.
Rose Quartz	Rose giggles and grabs Steven's hands. "oh, and we can teach her how to sing! I bet Lapis has a fantastic singing voice. She's already so pretty, can't you see her up on stage performing a ballad?" she asks, squeezing her 'sons' hands.
Lapis Lazuli	Lapis Lazuli blinked and looked confused. "I... I can try them, I... sing? On stage?" She'd only sung once. While in a fusion, and a good part of that had been with Pearl and Rose inside her. "I... I don't know if I'd be any good at that. But... but I like the idea of... trying other things. Exploring? Exploring myself and... this... it's... it's fun." She smiled gently to them. "I... I want to see what I become."
Rose Quartz	"That's a good way to think of it." she says, humming softly to herself. "But truly, you look fantastic." she says, running her fingers through her now short hair. Oh god. She's blushing up a storm, she just knows it.
Lapis Lazuli	Lapis Lazuli gave another soft smile. She was doing that a lot lately. She then glanced back to her hair, then up at roses. slowly she held out her hand. "Would... you like to try... dancing again? No fusion, just dancing. I... I liked doing that last time." Oh my gosh she was RELAXING!
Steven Universe	Steven smiles and makes his way out of the bathroom to the loft, where he keeps an LP player his dad gave him and a small collection of various music of all genres. "Want some music to dance to? I have most of the stuff Dad loves."
Rose Quartz	Rose... Flinches a bit. things have been difficult with her Greg lately. She's not around, she doesn't treat him like a person... They had a long talk recently, but it's still fresh and raw, imagining that people really are 'just like gems'. It's a blow to her ego... "S-sure. Something classy."
Lapis Lazuli	Lapis Lazuli blinked. Why did Rose flinch? Was it her? She pulled her hand back and hugged herself. A familiar gesture for her. "Do... do you not w-want to dance? Am I being selfish? I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean to, I-I just thought... d-dancing seemed fun and... and I'm sorry. I didn't mean to upset you..."
Rose Quartz	"No! I do want to dance, very much. Just... Things have been difficult lately, with my version of Greg." she says. "Thinking about him is awkward right now." she says as she shifts into a closer fitting 'club' outfit like what Rainbow Quartz wears.
Steven Universe	Steven doesn't see the flinch, and wouldn't really get why if he did. But he leafs through the records and finds one of something classical and slow, no lyrics or anything. "Classical is as classy as it gets, it's even in the name!" Hearing this last bit from Rose as the music starts, he does slump a little, though he's facing the record player again so it's not very obvious. He had hoped things were at least... okay.
Lapis Lazuli	Lapis Lazuli blinked a few times and then nodded. "I... I see..." She didn't come closer again. "Are... you planning to leave Pearl for him again? I thought you were a different Rose? Not like her?" And that smile was gone. Her eyes were lowered, her face in the shadow of her hair. This was not pleasant lapis anymore...
Rose Quartz	"Honestly? I don't know.' she says. "Probably not. There's... an infinite universe, multiverse, out there now. It's hard to say how things will play out... But knowing how things will turn out." she stops and sighs. "I really don't know. Even garnet's future vision can't see all ends." she murmurs, sitting down against a wall. "I either hurt my best friend, or Steven is never born."
Steven Universe	Steven seems to be really focused on the song, swaying slowly back and forth with the music. Maybe he didn't hear, maybe he doesn't know what to say, maybe he's just trying not to intrude on what is fast becoming a little personal. Regardless, he is watching the record spin slowly, still swaying.
Lapis Lazuli	Lapis Lazuli narrowed her eyes and pulled back a little more. "So you intend to, then. You ARE that rose. The one who... hurt Pearl. I thought... you might be different. From different times. A different place. A...." She shook her head and turned her back on her. "Maybe you were... different..."
Rose Quartz	"So what, do you want me say that this wonderful boy never gets born?" she asks, curling up in the corner. "I don't want to hurt her. But I don't want to hurt Steven either." she says. "In an infinite universe, there's a billion of me, of him, of everyone. And it's still so personal. How am I supposed to choose? Do i not? Do I just let things go as they are?"
Lapis Lazuli	Lapis Lazuli looked back between rose and steven... then... "YES! You do! You're not... you're here now! you aren't there. You won't be there! We have a steven! We don't need a spear. But... but pearl needs you... Steven needs you. They... they all need you."
Steven Universe	Now Steven turns to face them, tears streaking his round face under reddened eyes. "No, Lapis. She's not the same, and Dad isn't anymore either. I may not be an adult, but even I can see that can't work out this time. And I'm here, you don't have to give yourself up to make me, Mom. I'm already here. Mom loves all of you, all of us, but she doesn't love dad the same way she would have, and he's different now anyway. Everything's different, and I don't think love works that way." He's clearly very upset, but not angry, just... sad. Hurt in a way that can't really be fixed.
Rose Quartz	"I don't want to hurt anyone... I hurt enough people already during the war." she says, curling up. Her form flickers, starting to glitch out.
Steven Universe	Steven leaps up, runs back down the steps and buries his face in between Lapis and Rose, clutching at them both and crying softly. "We all hurt each other sometimes. But we try to do better and we just keep loving and forgiving each other, that's how it works!" At least, that sounds like what he said, somewhat muffled, ewtting both of them with his tears.
Lapis Lazuli	Lapis Lazuli was not nice to Rose, unfortunately. So she lashed out. "See? You're hurting him! Steven needs you and you're just ignoring him, talking about leaving. You already left pearl and the others behind and now you worry about leaving him behind too?"
Rose Quartz	Rose's eyes are green now, little swirls in her head. "I can't win. Either I hurt Greg and doom Steven, or I hurt all the other gems." she says, shuddering, trying to keep it together. With a supreme effort of will, she hugs Steven tightly to her. "I don't want him to disappear."
Lapis Lazuli	Lapis Lazuli went silent for a long moment. Then... "If... you don't then.... then he'll... disappear?" Aaaaaand now she sounded scared.
Rose Quartz	Rose looks up, with an anguished look on her face. "I don't know. I don't know how closely linked the universes and timelines are. If I decide to not carry on with Greg, what if Steven vanishes? Just one day, poof, he's not there anymore."
Steven Universe	"I'm here, you're here, I'm not gonna disappear. I won't! I won't! So you can't either!" At least, it sounds like that's what he said. Seems pretty clear, in spite of the increasingly sob-stained voice-muffling.
Rose Quartz	"You promise? You promise mama that you won't disappear?" she asks, hugging him tightly. She kisses his forehead and tucks him into the nearby bed. "Then... Then I'll stay." she says, tears streaming down her face.
Lapis Lazuli	Lapis Lazuli looked down and then... then she hugged Steven. She hugged him so tightly. Little tears formed in her eyes. "He won't. He won't ever, ever, ever disappear. He won't. He can't. He won't he won't he won't..." She sounded terrified. Then again, he did free her. But it was more than that. She did let her tuck him in, eventually though.
Rose Quartz	"I'm sorry, Lapis..." she snuffles. "I just... It's one of the things I'm most terrified of, is that I'll set a foot wrong, and I'll wind up erasing Steven. And all of you. AndI can't. I can't lose all of you, not... Not so soon."
Lapis Lazuli	Lapis Lazuli stared at her for a while and... "You won't," she whispered. "Things... must be different. If they weren't... then... then they'd already be gone... wouldn't they? You're... you're probably from another dimension."
Rose Quartz	"I hope so... But then, what about the Steven that was supposed to be from my world?" she asks, reaching out and burying her face in Lapis' enormous hair.
Lapis Lazuli	Lapis Lazuli blinked and took a slow, deep breath. ".... If you return there, you'll have to decide then. The greg here isn't... your greg. Right? So then... you need to worry about it when your actual greg comes. Right? You haven't met him yet. And... and if you return..." she paused. "You... have to let me out... please...."
Rose Quartz	Rose kisses Lapis just briefly. "I promise. I'll let you out. I'll let every one of you out that I can find." she says with a quiet sniffle.
Lapis Lazuli	Lapis Lazuli nods rapidly and smiles. "T-thank you. I jsut... if I could get out sooner..." She smiled. "That's the human thing, right? The kiss? It means... you're happy? Kind of? With me?"
Rose Quartz	"Oh Lapis, you're my little treasure." she says, giving the smaller gem a hug, adjusting her braid so it stays braided. "You're a wonderful gem. Even if you're bad sometimes, you don't mean it and you're trying to make up for it."
Lapis Lazuli	Lapis Lazuli blinked a little and then turned an adorable shade of blue. "Y-you're little... treasure?" she asked with a little squeak. "P-please don't bury me. I-I don't wanna be an eccessory again..."
Rose Quartz	"No, not like that. You're My Lapis." she says, kissing the end of Lappy's nose. "You're important to me. To everyone really, but especially to me." she says, standing up and putting on the music again. "So... Care to dance, my little Lappy?"
Lapis Lazuli	Lapis Lazuli blinked. "Especially to you? Why?" She held out her hand none the less, allowing her to pull her in to dance. She yielded again, allowing the larger woman to lad her, to direct their movements, slow and steady. Gentle, too...
Rose Quartz	It's a slow ballroom dance. "Why to me? Because I know you. I've fused with you twice now. My Pearl may fuse with me more but... You need me. You need someone strong and tough who can handle you at your worst so that you can be your best."
Lapis Lazuli	Lapis Lazuli blinked a few times. "W-what? But... but Pearl needs you too. And... and I have Steven. He's there for me. He's always there for me..." She slowly closed her eyes and rested against the larger gem. She was starting to see why Pearl loved her. Why she needed her. It felt... good. It felt safe. As if nothing was going to go wrong...
Rose Quartz	"This Pearl... She's moved on, or so she says. It's complicated, with different dimensions and timelines running into each other." she says as she twirls around the house with Lapis.
Lapis Lazuli	Lapis Lazuli nodded, swirling gently around her and sending off little specks of sparkling water as they move. So it's beautiful and radiant and gorgous. "She hasn't. She may say she has but... she needs you. She definitely does. I... I know her. I know the way she looks at you. The way she wants you... wants to touch you..."
Rose Quartz	"I know..." she says softly. "And it's hard, because I know she's my Pearl... And she's not. Nobody is, here. I haven't met anyone from 'my' time-line... And maybe that's for the best?"
Lapis Lazuli	Lapis Lazuli nodded a little. Each step had to be small, as the kimino didn't allow much movement. However, she still tried her best. "Maybe. I... I know how that feels.
