Taro     Autumn is settling in, which in Neo Arcadia is cool and dry. The dawn air is crisp and clear, with only a few wispy clouds and the occasional trail of steam pluming up from an industrial condensor against the lightening sky. The city-state never really sleeps, but it's certainly dozong at this early hours. The trains are still running, and there are a few people out and about, but few people and fewer aircars.
Taro has decided that Kari's progressed enough to move out of doors for today's lesson. There's a nice park along one of the many pedestrian skybridges that link Neo Arcadia's towers: a neat diagram of grass, flowerbeds, and shrubs, with park benches here and there. There's not so much dew on the grass as there is remnant droplets from the sprinkler system, so his armored boots get a little damp as he steps off the sidewalk. He still has no habit of smiling, but from the way he's carrying himself, he seems to be in a good mood.
Kari Wolf     Kari has not gotten used to the layout of Neo Arcadia yet, so she has settled into Taro's pocket as they travel, asking questions about this or that as they move through parts that she hasn't seen before. When they finally do get to the park.
"This is like some of the parks they have in Techno Urbania!" She says as she looks around with wonder. "Are we flying again today?"
Taro     Taro is happy to play tour guide along the way, answering her questions and pointing out items and places of inerest. There's a definite note of pride in his voice when he talks about the city - Neo Arcadia is Confederate by conquest, but he considers it his responsibility as conquerer, and therefore he takes pleasure and pride in its achievements. "Have you and Harriet and Zarenna been settling in well? Are you happy with your new apartment?"
"We are," Taro confirms with a nod, then extends a hand to give Kari a spot to hop out of his pocket. "It's not the most scenic park, but there are no trees, and the breeze is usually not very strong. A good place to continue your lessons."
Kari Wolf     "Master has been doing fine. She likes the new neighborhood and that there's a lot of people who she can talk to about work with. Master has been talking about building a new sister like Harriet too. Harriet is doing good! She made friends with some cyber elfs and they talk a lot about chess and philosophy things."
Kari hops out and looks at the park. "Is this what the land around Neo Arcadia was like when it was green?"
Taro     "It sounds like all of you are fitting in. Good." Kari's question leads him to gaze out over the park as well, his voice turning a bit somber. "Somewhat. There were very likely more trees and a much wider variety of plants and insects. So little information about what the world was like before the Elf War has survived, and thus it's hard to say just what it was like before then." A pause. "Even when the wasteland outside is restored, CyberGoddess willing, it will not be as it was before. Still, it will be far better than it is now."
Kari Wolf     Kari ooohs. "That'll be pretty nice to see! Especially from the air, right?" She sounds anxious to start today's flying lessons.
Taro     "Indeed. Until then, once you're ready for that step, we'll fly out over the wastelands together." Taro doesn't so much smile as the corners of his eyes crinkle slightly. "Go ahead and change into you Eukrante armor, and go through your preflight checklist. I'll radio traffic control to let them know of our flight lesson." Which he does, followed by unfolding and extending his own armor's wings.
Once she's ready, he quizzes her with, "You remember what to do before takeoff?"
Kari Wolf     With a shimmer of light, Kari's armor changes to the purple, white, and black Eukrante armor. "Uh well! Look around for things in the way!" She's looking around, then looks up, shading her eyes with her hand. In her vision the system checks scroll by with a final "OK!!!" flashing as everything turns up green. The little Howling then starts up the thrusters and anti-grav, floating up about eye-level to Taro. "See? I do listen sometimes!"
Taro      "So you do," There's a bit of amusement mixed in with the pleased with his student tone of voice. He too makes a quick glance to either side of him and then above him as his wings' countergrav softly hums to life. He doesn't move far, just skimming the ground. "All right. Rise to fifty meters, ahead a hundred meters and then bank right to above the light pole at the northwest corner. From there, fly straight until you're above the second park bench." Following directions, paying attention to ground markers, these are things they've practiced in their most recent lessons. The only real differences are the extra distractions around them and the fitful breeze from the east.
He's confident enough in her abilities that he simply glides up to the same alitude to watch, without trailing her.
Kari Wolf     Kari seems to think that rise 50 meters and ahead 100 meters is meant to be done at the same time. She swerves a few times to avoid thrown objects (such as a ball or frisbee), but does make it with some wobble from the breeze. But she kicks off the light pole instead, and flies straight towards the second park bench. She might be showing off.
Taro     To be fair, Taro wasn't explicit in his his instructions, only in his directions. A faint smirk plays on his lips as he watches just how she interprets them. He also doesn't call her on her showing off a bit, since she doesn't seem to be distracting herself with it. "Now, make a full loop of the park," he calls out the next set of instructions to her, "back to the light pole, then dive to skim the bushes without hitting them! Then return to me!" He chooses a relatively soft target for what will later be worked into bombing/harrying runs - if she mesjudges, landing in the bushes shouldn't hurt very much.
Kari Wolf     The loop goes well enough. There's some children who haven't seen a robot as small as Kari who watch. Maybe Kari can convince them to buy a Harriet-sized model from Zarenna? She does hit the bushes though, and doesn't come out the other end flying. Instead she walks out of them, scuffed up. "Guess I got more practice to do, huh Taro?"
Taro      They're attracting some attention, but Taro doesn't mind. They're another kind of distraction that Kari will have to get used to.
One side of his face twists up in a half-wince as Kari's dive takes her into the bushes, but that expression is gone by the time he gently glides down to meet her. That -is- why he made them her target instead of something more solid and unyielding. "So you do. It's not the easiest to master, but it is essential."
Kari Wolf     Kari dusts herself off. "How long did it take you to get the hang of it, Taro?"
Taro     "Several tries to understand the basics, even more practice to master. In some ways, I'm still perfecting it." Taro gives a small shrug. "I have the advantage of having already had flight as part of my standard motor control matrix, but they had been meant for a different shell than the kind I inhabit now."
