Tamamo     A perfectly ordinary Japan, for certain definitions of 'ordinary.' The year 2000, or thereabouts, isn't the ordinary era that Tamamo no Mae remembers, and she isn't an ordinary sight in most Earths of the same era. She's arrived looking every bit the descended goddess, or perhaps the incarnated spirit, the woman with the flowing outfit and three tails and tall ears like a red fox. She is eye-catching, and not in the least worried about making a scene, so long as nobody gets in her way too directly.

She's just come by to browse for fresh eel, after all.
Yomi Isayama On the plus side, walking around so brazenly means that people don't freak out at the sight of Tamamo. Most think she's just wearing an elaborate costume, and a few ask her if there's some event going on. Of course, word of someone with fox ears and tails and an elaborate outfit gets around, and Yomi is quick to volunteer to deal with the situation.

And so it is that a somewhat annoyed-looking exorcist makes her way through the local market, making a beeline for Tamamo as soon as she spots those ears and tail. "...We need to talk."
Tamamo     Tamamo responds pleasantly to anyone who speaks with her, though she doesn't know anything about a special event. She'd just like to know who has the best sea urchins. She doesn't even need to use any of her magic to deal with this much, fortunately, and so it is a very ordinary-looking, or as ordinary as the goddess seems to get, not-literally-glowing Tamamo that Yomi finally encounters.

One ear flicks, orienting toward her. Tamamo looks curious, then smiles, "Ah, Isayama, is it not? It is not our first meeting as such, but our first meeting 'in person,' no? Is something the matter?"
Yomi Isayama If there was a glow, there might be different problems. As is, when she sees the ear moving on its own, Yomi takes a deep breath. "Yes. We have spoken before. But..." She pauses, and glances at a nearby stall, then gestures down the street. "Let's talk somewhere a bit quieter. Please?" The exorcist doesn't yet have a handle on Tamamo, even though she's been assured that the fox is helpful. She pauses for a moment before adding, in a much lower voice, "Someone with fox ears and tails walking around is not exactly normal here. Most of the people probably think you're from off world, at least, but..."

In a shopping area like this, there are of course a few small cafes not far from the food stalls, so Yomi leads the way toward one nearby and pulls out a chair from one of the outdoor tables. "Since I dragged you from your shopping, go ahead and order what you want. My treat. Look..." She rests one arm on the table and gives a slight nod toward the ears atop Tamamo's head. "We've only spoken once before, but we probably got off on the wrong foot. Still, though, your name is not exactly given much favor with the exorcists here."
Tamamo     "Oh...? Why, yes, I suppose I am likely 'from off world,' am I not?" Tamamo answers Yomi, then says, "Just a moment, please," and says goodbye to the fishmonger she's found, but won't he keep that eel in the icebox? She'll be back in not too long. "Thank you. Now..." And so, Yomi leads her off.

"Oh? If you would like to offer me such hospitality, I see little reason to refuse." She tilts her head after that, smiling pleasantly, but not obviously understanding. Or maybe she does, and she's just very relaxed, regardless. She makes a thoughtful "Hmm," then "Is the legend the same here as elsewhere, then? Perhaps if you explained that matter to me, I would come to see your... perspective, as an exorcist. I may say, that I was not too fond of the onmyouji in that past-yet-to-come. Ah, yes, I would have the green tea, if you would be so kind."
Yomi Isayama The fox is polite. Yomi can see that much, at least. Once they're seated, she gives Tamamo a nod, then calls over a waitress. One green tea, one cream soda. It's something she can only ever get when she goes out, anyway. "I can't say we're exactly like onmyouji. There are some western techniques mixed in with the things we do. In any case..."

Yomi takes a breath and focuses her eyes on the fox. "I'll give you the short version. Tamamo-sama is.... not human. As is obvious, I'm sure. She was once linked with the Kyuubi fox and turned into a powerful evil spirit after she died. She's also has no care for humanity and is the one responsible for most of the more malevolent specters I have to deal with." The exorcist wrinkles her nose slightly. "There is a lot we don't know beyond that, but the trouble she's caused us is bad enough."
Tamamo     "Would you not consider yourself a modern onmyouji, then? Even the old traditions came to be from a slow mixing with those across the sea, no?" In any case.

"This does... not sound familiar to mine own ears, no. Apart from the words 'evil' and 'fox,' I'm not sure it relates at all." Her lips form a thin line, then she relaxes again and sips her tea, holding it in both hands. "Another legend, of another world, and still I can only say, 'it was not I,' and protest innocence."
Yomi Isayama Once the drinks arrive, Yomi sets hers on the table and brings her lips to the straw. Though she seems to be relaxed, not once does her gaze break from Tamamo. "Some of us in the Agency are onmyouji, yes. I'm just someone good at killing specters and other problem youkai. I don't have any divination skills."

The exorcist takes a deep breath and lifts her head, giving Tamamo a long, silent look. Finally, she sighs softly, but still refuses to look away. "Even if you are not, I can't help but associate you. It's like if you came across someone with the same name as an old enemy of yours. I'm sorry, but... that's going to color things. I won't lie to you." She smiles a bit thinly. "I am giving you the benefit of the doubt to not try to kill you on sight, at least. If you really are innocent of things like that, then I am not your enemy... but you'll have to forgive me if I can't trust you yet." She pauses a moment and finally looks down, taking another sip of her drink. "...or don't forgive me. That's up to you. If I'm hated for being cautious about keeping my city safe, then I'm willing to pay that price."
Tamamo     Tamamo eyes Yomi for a period that could be uncomfortably long. "'It is better than the old onmyouji treated me,' shall I say? Rather... 'is it not unreasonable to consider this solely upon a name,' I would like to say, but there is power in names. If I must prove my good nature, so be it. I would ask that you look upon my efforts, and decide as to my nature, as there you shall see 'that which I am.' May I guess, then, that you have some mistrust for the words of those who did, if I recall, speak in my defense on that occasion? Oh, but perhaps that is... a delicate topic. Please forgive my having mentioned it."

She takes a moment. "Instead, perhaps you might tell me of the other. You spoke of two who bear my name, yes? Who who seeks your death, and who betrayed you, yet only spoke of the one, today."
Yomi Isayama The exorcist slowly lifts an eyebrow. "Not as such, no. But..." She lifts a hand to give a vague wave. "It's less mistrust, and more... caution of ones I don't know well enough yet. I've seen too much, you might say." Yomi glances down again, pushing her now empty glass a few inches aside. "I don't dislike them, though that one... Rook? She seemed pretty defensive of you. I can recognize loyalty, at least."

Yomi taps a finger on the tabletop a few times. "Mmmn. That one. There was another, same name as you, same face as you. Same voice, same ears, same tail. Nobody knows what Tamamo-sama looks like, but I have met this other one in person. I gave her the benefit of the doubt, let her take a part time job in a cafe here." Her finger rubs at the tabletop as a look of annoyance comes to her face. "Then she leads friends from the Concord to one of our libraries to steal some books." She brings a hand to rub the bridge of her nose. "I know that one also isn't you, but the sting is still pretty fresh."
Tamamo     "Lilian Rook is the one whose prayers called me to this era, and those prayers I did see answered." Tamamo says. "She is many things, for one so young, and 'loyal' among them."

On to other figures. "Ah, yes, the... what did Lilian call her? A 'computer-generated copy'? It is outside my knowledge, though I have met her husband, sir Almasy. An intense young man. I expect he was... if anything, more confused by the sight of me than anyone." Her brow raises in curiosity. "Can you imagine, at that, meeting an entirely different woman, but the same in name and in every physical respect as your own wife? I admit, I cannot, but it explains why he chose to think of myself as his wife's twin sister. 'A different person who looks the same.' Still, as I said, I have no knowledge of another."

A pause. "With that said, please accept my condolences. I shall not, at the very least, rob any libraries, no matter whether I begin with a deception as cafe waitstaff. I am certain that none of my goals require such a thing. Ah, however, please forgive my confusion on this, but are libraries not now treated as facilities that provide their books freely?"
Yomi Isayama "I admit, I still don't understand how things like that work. But like I said, I'm no diviner. Magic and the like is a bit beyond me." Yomi thinks for a moment and nods. "I've met him also. And I can imagine the confusion. You share her voice and looks, but you don't talk like her. So I suppose it's easy enough for me to differentiate the two of you."

The exorcist shakes her head. "Not that kind of library. This one was more... private. A repository for the historical and magical tomes that the Agency uses. Mostly the onmyouji and the shikigami users, though. I've only been in there a few times, myself. Still, the books belong to us and I'm sure a lot of them have some sort of power."
