315 <X-Union-Chatter> [A] Staren says, "Is everything alright?"
 +
355 <X-Union-Chatter> [A] Twilight Sparkle sighs again. "I...I just don't understand people like that. Why would you want to do that to people? And...why do so many worlds turn to killing so quickly? We have never had to kill a criminal or other threat on Equestria, as far as I know."
 +
362 <X-Union-Chatter> [6] Raditz says, "It's just a thing... Not every universe has had the luxury of that kind of moral center that yours does, unfortunately..."
 +
364 <X-Union-Chatter> [LC] Jericho Hawke says, "A lotta worlds just develop the nack for violence/"
 +
368 <X-Union-Chatter> [7] Toph Beifong says, "Some people are dunderheads, Twilight."

369 <X-Union-Chatter> [LC] Jericho Hawke says, "I mean mine ain't any exception."

 +
373 <X-Union-Chatter> [7] Toph Beifong says, "And well... Equestria is the nicest place I have been to. Makes my world seem like a hellhole in comparison if you're judging it by how nice people are."

374 <X-Union-Chatter> [A] Adelaide Flowers says, "Huh.  Sounds like a nice place to visit."
 +
377 <X-Union-Chatter> [A] Fassad says, "Honestly. There is nothing to understand. Some people are just EVIL VILLAINS, who the heroes of legend must slay! We are those heroes!"

 +
379 <X-Union-Chatter> [A] Blurr says, "Sometimes there's just no other way to stop them."
 +
381 <X-Union-Chatter> [A] Fassad says, "...oversimplify?"
 +
382 <X-Union-Chatter> [6] Raditz says, "Ix nay on the lay say, man."
 +
384 <X-Union-Chatter> [A] Staren says, "Although... although perhaps, this is the kind of in-depth subject we need a side channel for?"
 +
385 <X-Union-Chatter> [3-RF] Psyber says, "Good call, Staren."
 +
394 <X-Union-Chatter> [3-RF] Psyber pings that 1X has been made to continue this discussion.
 +
401 <X-Union-Chatter> [A] Staren says, "Hop over to channel 2X-Morality... oh"
 +
427 <X-Union-Chatter> [A] Karima says, "You'd be surprised what some people would do for a chance at what they think is a better life."
 +
528 <X-Union-Chatter> [LC] Ahri says, "Mm. Jinx is just.. Jinx.  There's really no changing her mind. Summoners have tried."
 +
411 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "Alright."
 +
417 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "Let me think of how I can ask questions that probe at what sets ponies apart."
 +
434 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "Well, yes, there are many reasons. Some learn to fight and kill over desperation. Sometimes there simply isn't enough to go around."
 +
468 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "I can tell you that when people evolve, rather than being created wholesale via deity, evolutionary pressure encourages them to cooperate and help eachother, but only within their own group, whatever that may be. It's like there's a little switch that makes it easy to see people as 'not people', if they're the 'Them' in 'Us vs Them'."
 +
477 <1X-Supplemental> Fassad says, "Honestly, I just think a lot of people are plain out born evil. Possibly due to dark deities and forces."
 +
479 <1X-Supplemental> Jericho Hawke says, "I want to pose a question. Mostly to Twilight, but anybody else can feel free to answer it too."
 +
481 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "I see...so, competition over resources leads naturally to violence, just as it does in nature..." Pause. "A question for me?"
 +
482 <1X-Supplemental> Jericho Hawke says, "Yeah."
 +
484 <1X-Supplemental> Jericho Hawke says, "You fight, right? As a member of the Union? What's your reason for it? I mean everybody's got a reason for why they do what they do, even if that reason is batshit insanity."
 +
485 <1X-Supplemental> Jericho Hawke says, "So what's your's?"
 +
486 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "And then... I suppose they're as easy to kill as any animal or plant that's in your way. Although, Equestria's animals aren't like most, either... But you get my point. You think nothing of damaging or killing plants for your own benefit. In your case, this is because you know the plants on your world aren't people. But would most ponies even consider the thought? Some humans see anyone they don't like as no more than plants."
 +
490 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "Err. Some humans and other kinds of people."
 +
502 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "Why do I fight for the Union? I...fight for my friends. For a more peaceful future."
 +
504 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "Not a bad thign to fight fore."
 +
507 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "When it comes to ponies... I asked Celestia once, the older one, and she said only that Friendship is Magic."
 +
509 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "However, I have a theory about how, exactly, the Magic of Friendship may have changed that world."
 +
510 <1X-Supplemental> Jericho Hawke says, "That's a good reason."
 +
511 <1X-Supplemental> Jericho Hawke says, "I was mostly just curious."
 +
517 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "Which world?"
 +
519 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "The most recent unification?"
 +
522 <1X-Supplemental> Jericho Hawke says, "I assume he means the one with the alternate versions of you and your friends."
 +
523 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "Yours."
 +
524 <1X-Supplemental> Jericho Hawke says, "But I've been known to be wrong, from time to time."
 +
529 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "Oh. Because I was going to ask...where did you find their Celestia."
 +
536 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "As I understand it, the three pony tribes did not mingle, once upon a time. They were trading partners, but each sought to get the most power and exploit the others. Sound familiar? I would not be surprised to learn that there was killing in that time, but that such... grisly details never made it into the history books, since it faded into legend centuries or millenia before history books were even printed."
 +
537 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz ugh, "Please tell me we're not going into science gibberish. Science is one thing I could go without trying to wrap my brain around."
 +
541 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "It may be the theory you expressed before, Staren. That our powers of friendship and harmony are as essential to our survival as the powers of cunning and predation are o other worlds."
 +
544 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle  to other worlds*
 +
545 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "Well, that's one way of stating my theory, yeah..."
 +
548 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "More like history, Raditz."
 +
549 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "Oh, even better.."
 +
550 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "Although, now that I think about it, legends this old may be metaphor. Who knows what it was /really/ like? Maybe historians from Past Equestria might know more details."
 +
552 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "With some theorizing mixed in."
 +
557 <1X-Supplemental> Priscilla says, "If it is possible for a god to giveth life to a people naturally inclined towards peaceful behaviour by their very nature, wouldst it not stand to reason that a god couldst also create the exact opposite?"
 +
560 <1X-Supplemental> Priscilla says, "If ponies can be said to be intrinsically good hearted, then there art other peoples in existence who couldst be said to be intrinsically cruel and violent."
 +
561 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "I don't believe in any gods myself, but if you're going to use that logic... Saiyans."
 +
563 <1X-Supplemental> Jericho Hawke says, "Yeah, we call them Templars where I come from."
 +
565 <1X-Supplemental> Beli Klum says, "The demons and angels of my world are the embodiments of sin and virtue, respectively. It happens sometimes."
 +
567 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "I'm afraid even I do not know the history of our world much beyond the Hearth's Warming story."
 +
569 <1X-Supplemental> Beli Klum says, "Though assuming that a race is intrinsically evil or good is usually a flawed way of thinking."
 +
573 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "I suppose it is possible that once upon a time Equestria was a violent, dark place, but...it is hard to imagine. ...or was."
 +
574 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "_Anyway_, eventually, the emotions between the three tribes attracted a supernatural predator that feeds on hatred, and as a byproduct of its presence, exudes supernatural cold. So thick did the world around the ponies become with the cold of the Windigos that they faced extinction -- even earth pony magic could not grow the crops, unicorn magic was not strong enough to stop the cold, and the weather was so messed up the pegasi could do nothing."
 +
589 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "So some of them, from all three tribes, set out to find a place less cold. Only by deciding to work together could they keep the windigos at bay. And so Equestria, the country, was founded by ponies willing to work together with other tribes and cooperate and be friends. Any filled with enough hatred to not join them, well..."
 +
593 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "So anyway, that's my theory on why Equestria is different."
 +
605 <1X-Supplemental> Jericho Hawke says, "It was founded on a need for mutual survival, as opposed to having something so somebody else couldn't?"
 +
613 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "Yes. Without friendship and harmony, it is likely the ponies and the entire world would have been frozen."
 +
619 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "Yes, and those unwilling to do so indirectly removed themselves from the gene pool. Of course... we're talking in terms of /tendencies/... So, there are still ponies who are mean or rude to one degree or another, it's not like none of them have negative personality traits... But the Windigos removed the worst of them in one fell swoop, and I imagine  the species-wide level of nastiness just never recovered."
 +
625 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "Thaaaat's pretty dark."
 +
626 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "...Yeah. That's why I don't go around talking about it all the time."
 +
627 <1X-Supplemental> Psyber says, "Except that social behaviors are not a genetic trait."
 +
629 <1X-Supplemental> Psyber says, "So you can't really claim that Darwinism fixed this."
 +
634 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "Perhaps, but because of that incident, we have an Equestria-wide pagent every year called Hearth's Warming. We retell the story, and spread the news of friendship and harmony to each new generation."
 +
638 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "Each town holds its own pagent, all throughout Equestria."
 +
640 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "Well, the same argument can be made for culturally passing it on. Heck, that's even /easier/. The founders of Equestria passed on a culture of cooperation."
 +
648 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "But, we have other races on Equestria. Dragons for instance, and they do not seem overly inclined to be nice. Except for my number one assistant, Spike."
 +
652 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "Although I wouldn't discount entirely the potential role of genetics. Heck, it's only genetics that makes it seem hard to explain in the first place. Imagine if Equestria turned out to run on Lamarkian evolution -- maybe it does, I never checked -- That'd make the effect of the Windigos even more direct!"
 +
665 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "Staren. Dude... Let's just assume it's kind of a mystery."
 +
669 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "You realize the only purpose of mysteries is to be solved, right?"
 +
673 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "But...if we figure it out, we might be able to spread the magic of friendship to other worlds!"
 +
675 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "If it /is/ a mystery, that means we gotta find out what /is/ going on! Although, uh..."
 +
678 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "I do have to admit that the current theory sure isn't one that would be ethical to apply to other worlds..."
 +
680 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "I... Am not entirely sure that's how friendship works in other worlds, Twilight..."
 +
712 <1X-Supplemental> Priscilla says, "Hast thou considered the idea that some things art passed down not by physical means?"
 +
717 <1X-Supplemental> Priscilla says, "I am quite certain that sorcerous ability, for instance, stems not from "genetics" in many worlds"
 +
723 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "There's magic in my Universe... It's not very friendshippy."
 +
727 <1X-Supplemental> Priscilla says, "Likewise."
 +
734 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "Magic does seem to be genetic in Equestria. Ponies of one kind cannot use the magics of the other two."
 +
742 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "Anyway, we can talk genetics and science and culture all we want, but that doesn't explain some people, some races.."
 +
747 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "It doesn't?"
 +
755 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "Science is a process. You use it on anything, to figure out /how/ to explain it."
 +
757 <1X-Supplemental> Priscilla says, "Such as those that hath existed since the beginning of time."
 +
769 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "Well, some people develope psychological problems due to environmental or social influences."
 +
778 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "Like people aren't after anything logical, Staren... They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with... Some people just want to watch the world burn."
 +
784 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "some people aren't*"
 +
786 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "And there's a reason for that!"
 +
790 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "We just don't know what it is for every given person."
 +
795 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "Something bad happened to them once upon a time?"
 +
802 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "But that doesn't mean you just /give up/ and assume there's /no/ explanation. Mysteries' only purpose is to be solved, not to be held up as an ideal."
 +
807 <1X-Supplemental> Jericho Hawke says, "People react differently to trauma."
 +
828 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "Curiousity is a virtue, but imagine if someone went around saying 'What? No man, I don't really wanna /know/, if I found out I couldn't be curious anymore!' They are not truly curious."
 +
853 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "Are you gonna ask Jinx then what her reasons for being all loony are? Why she'd rather blow up a bank and not grab the money?"
 +
862 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "I don't think she would see the value in satisfying my curiousity."
 +
867 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle mmphs. "I was going to, but...I didn't think she would answer honestly."
 +
871 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "I bet it's more honest than you'd think."
 +
880 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "But that doesn't mean that there isn't an answer. I figure, as I said before, that she doesn't see most people as of the same kind as her. So she cares no more about hurting them than you do about treading on blades of grass."
 +
881 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle hmms. "Perhaps I will ask her. I am...curious."
 +
887 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "She probably has friends she cares about to some degree, though."
 +
895 <1X-Supplemental> Priscilla says, "Am I required to furnish Sir Staren with a philosophical quandary to keep him busy for the next one hundred years?"
 +
896 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "...I never did finish my study of whether plants on Equestria had any intelligence..."
 +
905 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz facepalm.
 +
910 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "Maybe I'll collect philosophical quandaries!"
 +
913 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "Like some people collect pretty rocks."
 +
915 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "Would certainly be a lot more interesting..."
 +
918 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle giggles.
 +
920 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, ".... Nerrrrrrds."
 +
923 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle sigh.
 +
927 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "You sound just like Rainbow Dash."
 +
929 <1X-Supplemental> Priscilla says, "I hereby command thee to an exhaustive study of the Everlasting Dragons. Attempt, if thou art able, to discern one iota of their culture, psyches, or true nature."
 +
934 <1X-Supplemental> Priscilla says, "Then tell of how thine findings relate to the sciences thou knoweth of"
 +
939 <1X-Supplemental> Priscilla says, "I shall be waiting."
 +
944 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "I admit, why right and wrong matter when they aren't written in physics was a doozy. Had me trying to figure it out for years."
 +
949 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "...What's an Everlasting Dragon?"
 +
954 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "Anyway, some people, some races, they just aren't wired for friendship, Twilight."
 +
955 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "That may be true. Stay away from Creation's Raksha."
 +
956 <1X-Supplemental> Priscilla says, "A being native to mine homeland, which thou hast already shown some interest in. From before the formation of the world. Before magic. Before life. Before death. Before heat and cold. Before the existence of souls. Before time itself."
 +
957 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "If you want a character study of a race that's inherently violent, I can tell you all about the Saiyan Race."
 +
958 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "However... The multiverse seems to favor people wired a certain way. Far more villains you face here are, I suspect, wired for such things -- but the circuits are deactivated for some reason."
 +
959 <1X-Supplemental> Priscilla says, "I wholeheartedly challenge thee to apply thine sciences."
 +
961 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "(That's gonna be a long wait, Priscilla)"
 +
963 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "Well, what have I got to work with, Priscilla? ANy of these still around to study? Are they amenable to study at all? Remember, I only asserted that there /was/ an explanation for everything, not that all explanations are practical to uncover."
 +
965 <1X-Supplemental> Priscilla says, "An entire world's history and one of their descendants."
 +
969 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "Hmm. Maybe I'll get the chance to talk with that descendant, but this isn't a rush order. There may be more pressing needs -- you and I should be around for quite awhile."
 +
972 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "So, Twi, how bout it? You want a profile on Saiyans or not?"
 +
974 <1X-Supplemental> Yuri Stinson belatedly, "It's not just Raksha.  Most of Creation is a shithole you should stay away from in general."
 +
1011 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "I suppose it couldn't hurt. Thank you."
 +
1013 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "... That is also assuming you haven't at some point already read up on Saiyans."
 +
1016 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "Um...well, I didn't want to turn away your help...but, I have read about saiyans. However, you might know things that are not in the history books."
 +
1028 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "Oh, then you probably didn't read a whole lot..."
 +
1032 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "What makes you say that?"
 +
1035 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "Well, my race is... Kind of almost extinct in a lot of places."
 +
1043 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "Any information that isn't 'They got obliterated by a freak meteor' is probably information from Vegeta or myself."
 +
1061 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "I'm gonna fly over to the Library. I'll see if I can't stay bipedal this time."
 +
1068 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "Should I prepare snacks for your visit?"
 +
1069 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "Make extra, I'm bringing someone along..."
 +
1074 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "Mind if I drop by too?"
 +
1077 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "Of course not, Staren."

369 <X-Union-Chatter> [LC] Jericho Hawke says, "I mean mine ain't any exception."
372 <X-Union-Chatter> [A] Staren says, "Some people don't value others' lives, for a variety of reasons."
377 <X-Union-Chatter> [A] Fassad says, "Honestly. There is nothing to understand. Some people are just EVIL VILLAINS, who the heroes of legend must slay! We are those heroes!"
378 <X-Union-Chatter> [A] Staren says, "Don't oversimplify it like that."
379 <X-Union-Chatter> [A] Blurr says, "Sometimes there's just no other way to stop them."
381 <X-Union-Chatter> [A] Fassad says, "...oversimplify?"
382 <X-Union-Chatter> [6] Raditz says, "Ix nay on the lay say, man."
384 <X-Union-Chatter> [A] Staren says, "Although... although perhaps, this is the kind of in-depth subject we need a side channel for?"
385 <X-Union-Chatter> [3-RF] Psyber says, "Good call, Staren."
394 <X-Union-Chatter> [3-RF] Psyber pings that 1X has been made to continue this discussion.
401 <X-Union-Chatter> [A] Staren says, "Hop over to channel 2X-Morality... oh"
427 <X-Union-Chatter> [A] Karima says, "You'd be surprised what some people would do for a chance at what they think is a better life."
528 <X-Union-Chatter> [LC] Ahri says, "Mm. Jinx is just.. Jinx. There's really no changing her mind. Summoners have tried."
411 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "Alright."
417 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "Let me think of how I can ask questions that probe at what sets ponies apart."
434 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "Well, yes, there are many reasons. Some learn to fight and kill over desperation. Sometimes there simply isn't enough to go around."
477 <1X-Supplemental> Fassad says, "Honestly, I just think a lot of people are plain out born evil. Possibly due to dark deities and forces."
479 <1X-Supplemental> Jericho Hawke says, "I want to pose a question. Mostly to Twilight, but anybody else can feel free to answer it too."
481 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "I see...so, competition over resources leads naturally to violence, just as it does in nature..." Pause. "A question for me?"
482 <1X-Supplemental> Jericho Hawke says, "Yeah."
484 <1X-Supplemental> Jericho Hawke says, "You fight, right? As a member of the Union? What's your reason for it? I mean everybody's got a reason for why they do what they do, even if that reason is batshit insanity."
485 <1X-Supplemental> Jericho Hawke says, "So what's your's?"
490 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "Err. Some humans and other kinds of people."
502 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "Why do I fight for the Union? I...fight for my friends. For a more peaceful future."
504 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "Not a bad thign to fight fore."
507 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "When it comes to ponies... I asked Celestia once, the older one, and she said only that Friendship is Magic."
509 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "However, I have a theory about how, exactly, the Magic of Friendship may have changed that world."
510 <1X-Supplemental> Jericho Hawke says, "That's a good reason."
511 <1X-Supplemental> Jericho Hawke says, "I was mostly just curious."
517 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "Which world?"
519 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "The most recent unification?"
522 <1X-Supplemental> Jericho Hawke says, "I assume he means the one with the alternate versions of you and your friends."
523 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "Yours."
524 <1X-Supplemental> Jericho Hawke says, "But I've been known to be wrong, from time to time."
529 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "Oh. Because I was going to ask...where did you find their Celestia."
537 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz ugh, "Please tell me we're not going into science gibberish. Science is one thing I could go without trying to wrap my brain around."
541 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "It may be the theory you expressed before, Staren. That our powers of friendship and harmony are as essential to our survival as the powers of cunning and predation are o other worlds."
544 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle to other worlds*
545 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "Well, that's one way of stating my theory, yeah..."
548 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "More like history, Raditz."
549 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "Oh, even better.."
550 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "Although, now that I think about it, legends this old may be metaphor. Who knows what it was /really/ like? Maybe historians from Past Equestria might know more details."
552 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "With some theorizing mixed in."
557 <1X-Supplemental> Priscilla says, "If it is possible for a god to giveth life to a people naturally inclined towards peaceful behaviour by their very nature, wouldst it not stand to reason that a god couldst also create the exact opposite?"
560 <1X-Supplemental> Priscilla says, "If ponies can be said to be intrinsically good hearted, then there art other peoples in existence who couldst be said to be intrinsically cruel and violent."
561 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "I don't believe in any gods myself, but if you're going to use that logic... Saiyans."
563 <1X-Supplemental> Jericho Hawke says, "Yeah, we call them Templars where I come from."
565 <1X-Supplemental> Beli Klum says, "The demons and angels of my world are the embodiments of sin and virtue, respectively. It happens sometimes."
567 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "I'm afraid even I do not know the history of our world much beyond the Hearth's Warming story."
569 <1X-Supplemental> Beli Klum says, "Though assuming that a race is intrinsically evil or good is usually a flawed way of thinking."
573 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "I suppose it is possible that once upon a time Equestria was a violent, dark place, but...it is hard to imagine. ...or was."
593 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "So anyway, that's my theory on why Equestria is different."
605 <1X-Supplemental> Jericho Hawke says, "It was founded on a need for mutual survival, as opposed to having something so somebody else couldn't?"
613 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "Yes. Without friendship and harmony, it is likely the ponies and the entire world would have been frozen."
625 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "Thaaaat's pretty dark."
626 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "...Yeah. That's why I don't go around talking about it all the time."
627 <1X-Supplemental> Psyber says, "Except that social behaviors are not a genetic trait."
629 <1X-Supplemental> Psyber says, "So you can't really claim that Darwinism fixed this."
634 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "Perhaps, but because of that incident, we have an Equestria-wide pagent every year called Hearth's Warming. We retell the story, and spread the news of friendship and harmony to each new generation."
638 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "Each town holds its own pagent, all throughout Equestria."
640 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "Well, the same argument can be made for culturally passing it on. Heck, that's even /easier/. The founders of Equestria passed on a culture of cooperation."
648 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "But, we have other races on Equestria. Dragons for instance, and they do not seem overly inclined to be nice. Except for my number one assistant, Spike."
665 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "Staren. Dude... Let's just assume it's kind of a mystery."
669 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "You realize the only purpose of mysteries is to be solved, right?"
673 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "But...if we figure it out, we might be able to spread the magic of friendship to other worlds!"
675 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "If it /is/ a mystery, that means we gotta find out what /is/ going on! Although, uh..."
678 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "I do have to admit that the current theory sure isn't one that would be ethical to apply to other worlds..."
680 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "I... Am not entirely sure that's how friendship works in other worlds, Twilight..."
712 <1X-Supplemental> Priscilla says, "Hast thou considered the idea that some things art passed down not by physical means?"
717 <1X-Supplemental> Priscilla says, "I am quite certain that sorcerous ability, for instance, stems not from "genetics" in many worlds"
723 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "There's magic in my Universe... It's not very friendshippy."
727 <1X-Supplemental> Priscilla says, "Likewise."
734 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "Magic does seem to be genetic in Equestria. Ponies of one kind cannot use the magics of the other two."
742 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "Anyway, we can talk genetics and science and culture all we want, but that doesn't explain some people, some races.."
747 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "It doesn't?"
755 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "Science is a process. You use it on anything, to figure out /how/ to explain it."
757 <1X-Supplemental> Priscilla says, "Such as those that hath existed since the beginning of time."
769 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "Well, some people develope psychological problems due to environmental or social influences."
778 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "Like people aren't after anything logical, Staren... They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with... Some people just want to watch the world burn."
784 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "some people aren't*"
786 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "And there's a reason for that!"
790 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "We just don't know what it is for every given person."
795 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "Something bad happened to them once upon a time?"
802 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "But that doesn't mean you just /give up/ and assume there's /no/ explanation. Mysteries' only purpose is to be solved, not to be held up as an ideal."
807 <1X-Supplemental> Jericho Hawke says, "People react differently to trauma."
828 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "Curiousity is a virtue, but imagine if someone went around saying 'What? No man, I don't really wanna /know/, if I found out I couldn't be curious anymore!' They are not truly curious."
853 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "Are you gonna ask Jinx then what her reasons for being all loony are? Why she'd rather blow up a bank and not grab the money?"
862 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "I don't think she would see the value in satisfying my curiousity."
867 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle mmphs. "I was going to, but...I didn't think she would answer honestly."
871 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "I bet it's more honest than you'd think."
880 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "But that doesn't mean that there isn't an answer. I figure, as I said before, that she doesn't see most people as of the same kind as her. So she cares no more about hurting them than you do about treading on blades of grass."
881 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle hmms. "Perhaps I will ask her. I am...curious."
887 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "She probably has friends she cares about to some degree, though."
895 <1X-Supplemental> Priscilla says, "Am I required to furnish Sir Staren with a philosophical quandary to keep him busy for the next one hundred years?"
896 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "...I never did finish my study of whether plants on Equestria had any intelligence..."
905 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz facepalm.
910 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "Maybe I'll collect philosophical quandaries!"
913 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "Like some people collect pretty rocks."
915 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "Would certainly be a lot more interesting..."
918 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle giggles.
920 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, ".... Nerrrrrrds."
923 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle sigh.
927 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "You sound just like Rainbow Dash."
929 <1X-Supplemental> Priscilla says, "I hereby command thee to an exhaustive study of the Everlasting Dragons. Attempt, if thou art able, to discern one iota of their culture, psyches, or true nature."
934 <1X-Supplemental> Priscilla says, "Then tell of how thine findings relate to the sciences thou knoweth of"
939 <1X-Supplemental> Priscilla says, "I shall be waiting."
944 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "I admit, why right and wrong matter when they aren't written in physics was a doozy. Had me trying to figure it out for years."
949 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "...What's an Everlasting Dragon?"
954 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "Anyway, some people, some races, they just aren't wired for friendship, Twilight."
955 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "That may be true. Stay away from Creation's Raksha."
956 <1X-Supplemental> Priscilla says, "A being native to mine homeland, which thou hast already shown some interest in. From before the formation of the world. Before magic. Before life. Before death. Before heat and cold. Before the existence of souls. Before time itself."
957 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "If you want a character study of a race that's inherently violent, I can tell you all about the Saiyan Race."
958 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "However... The multiverse seems to favor people wired a certain way. Far more villains you face here are, I suspect, wired for such things -- but the circuits are deactivated for some reason."
959 <1X-Supplemental> Priscilla says, "I wholeheartedly challenge thee to apply thine sciences."
961 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "(That's gonna be a long wait, Priscilla)"
963 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "Well, what have I got to work with, Priscilla? ANy of these still around to study? Are they amenable to study at all? Remember, I only asserted that there /was/ an explanation for everything, not that all explanations are practical to uncover."
965 <1X-Supplemental> Priscilla says, "An entire world's history and one of their descendants."
969 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "Hmm. Maybe I'll get the chance to talk with that descendant, but this isn't a rush order. There may be more pressing needs -- you and I should be around for quite awhile."
972 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "So, Twi, how bout it? You want a profile on Saiyans or not?"
974 <1X-Supplemental> Yuri Stinson belatedly, "It's not just Raksha. Most of Creation is a shithole you should stay away from in general."
1011 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "I suppose it couldn't hurt. Thank you."
1013 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "... That is also assuming you haven't at some point already read up on Saiyans."
1016 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "Um...well, I didn't want to turn away your help...but, I have read about saiyans. However, you might know things that are not in the history books."
1028 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "Oh, then you probably didn't read a whole lot..."
1032 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "What makes you say that?"
1035 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "Well, my race is... Kind of almost extinct in a lot of places."
1043 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "Any information that isn't 'They got obliterated by a freak meteor' is probably information from Vegeta or myself."
1061 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "I'm gonna fly over to the Library. I'll see if I can't stay bipedal this time."
1068 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "Should I prepare snacks for your visit?"
1069 <1X-Supplemental> Raditz says, "Make extra, I'm bringing someone along..."
1074 <1X-Supplemental> Staren says, "Mind if I drop by too?"
1077 <1X-Supplemental> Twilight Sparkle says, "Of course not, Staren."

Raditz has posed:
For the first time in probably a while, Raditz drops down from the sky in his non-pony form into Ponyville, within walking distance of the library, and for once he's not alone. Flying at his side is a woman in an oriental casual attire, with red fiery hair was Merra. That would be Raditz's wife, and in her arms shee's carrying a bundle.

"You didn't have to come along, you know." Raditz mutters, an eyebrow twitching. Merra cheerfuly replies, "Oh, Raditz, how could I miss this? I've always loved horses as a child, and you did promise..." Raditz just grrs a little.

Staren has posed:
The white unicorn stallion is already on his way to the library when Raditz and Merra come in for a landing. How can he not see that? He starts to approach, but at the comment about having always loved horses, he hesitates, unsure if he risks being on the recieving end of a fawning. After thinking for a bit, he determines that if that /does/ happen, switching forms first will only defer it onto Twilight. So, over to them ge trots. "Hey, Raditz. Who's your friend?"

Twilight Sparkle has posed:
Guests! Late at night! This is becoming a regular thing for Twilight. Which doesn't actually inconvenience her too much. She often stays up pretty late anyway. She is busy in the kitchen, using her magic to prepare a multitude of snacks and drinks for her incoming guests. Knowing she has possibly two saiyans on the way, she makes a veritable mountain of cucumber and carrot sandwiches, along with a couple of gallons of mixed fruit juices.

Then, then gets them all set up in the living room on the coffee table in front of her comfy couch. After that, she clops cheerfully to her front door and opens it, checking to see if Staren and Raditz are nearby. And they are! So, Twilight trots out to meet them. "Hello Raditz! Hello Staren! Hello...ah, forgive me, I don't think we've met." That last part is directed to Merra of course. Then, Twilight's eyes widen. "Is...is that a human foal? Er..ah, baby?" she asks with barely contained excitement. It's so cute, after all, with those tiny fingers and giant eyes and other things that make babies cute.

Raditz has posed:
Raditz blinks a little as he hears the voice, before recognizing the pony formed Staren, "Hey Staren... I'll do introductions in a bit, let's just get inside..." He doesn't want to draw too much attention, and though his presence is already kind of welcome in Ponyville, the additional human might bring curiousity that Raditz isn't ready for.

Of course, going inside is interrupted by Twilight coming on out, "Oh... I guess I'm doing introductions right now then..." Merra shoots Raditz a mischievous smile, and says, "It's fine, I'll introduce myself, Raditz..." She steps forward and hefts up the bundle, which does in fact contain a auburn haired child, "I'm Merra, wife to 'The King of All Saiyans'." Raditz grumbles at the way Merra intones that, before the woman continues, "And this is Gine, and she's technically only half human." She olds the baby to show but not be too shakey. Little Gine just sort of stares at the colorful ponies, before giggling.

Staren has posed:
Only after walking up does Staren get a clear look at the baby. He looks slightly surprised. Simply, he does not /encounter/ babies. So he's not sure how he should act around them. He spends a long moment staring off into space, analyzing the value of babies in general, before some other part of him says hey, dude, you don't need to think about all that right now: This is an ally's wife and kid. Don't be concerned with your interactions with the baby -- be concerned with your interaction with the parents. So he unfreezes and trots the rest of the way up to them. "I didn't know you had a kid. Congratulations! And a wife. Double congratulations! To both of you! I'm Staren, of the Free City of Lazlo. Nice to meet you." He raises a hoof as if for a handshake.

Twilight Sparkle has posed:
Twilight giggles when the baby does, then smiles brightly. "Please, come inside!" Twilight says, then turns toward the library and starts walking. "Oh! I'm Twilight Sparkle, by the way. It's so nice to meet you, Merra!" she says, then giggles again and looks toward Gine. "And you too, widdle Gine." she says in baby talk before she opens the door and heads on inside.

Raditz has posed:
Raditz just kind of sigh with his forehead planted to the palm of his hand, "Thanks, Staren... Yeah, let's just... Go in..." He grumbles and turns to just walk through, before knocking his head right into the top of the doorframe, "Augh! Gee, I forgot that your house is much shorter than it looks." Rubbing his head before stooping on inside.

Merra in the meantime shakes Staren's hoof and nods to Twilight, smiling, "Nice to meet both of you, and thank you, Staren." She follows Raditz inside, laughing softly when she watches him smack his head into the doorway, and carefully walks in without hitting her head herself.

Once inside, Raditz sighs and drops onto the couch, not even waiting to be offered as he grabs a handful of sandwhiches and stuffs them into his mouth. Merra sits beside him and sets little Gine down in her lap, the child's tail flicking about as she just looks around the whole new world of things, as she says, "So, Raditz said he's here to give a history lessen about Saiyans, mm? Good for him." Raditz just grumbles in the meantime.

Staren has posed:
Staren smiles to Merra, then walks in after them. He closes the door if Twilight doesn't get it first. "Yeah. So, you just came to see the ponies?"

Twilight Sparkle has posed:
Twilight takes a seat on a nearby bean-bag and smiles. "I am looking forward to the history lesson. There was some information in the Union databanks, but I doubt it was comprehensive, and even if it was it didn't extend past the saiyan's induction into the Planetary Trade Organization." she says. She looks to Merra. "You are welcome to the sandwiches and fruit juice, and I may have some milk around if Gine is hungry." Twilight says cheerfully.

As Gine's tail flicks about, there is a flapping of wings, then... 'who?' A large owl lands on the arm of the couch, his eyes kind and his posture polished. "Oh! Owlowiscious. So nice of you to join us!" Twilight says. 'who?' the owl says again before looking curiously at the baby saiyan/human.

Raditz has posed:
Gine goes wide eyed as she sees the owl, just staring. The world is just bright and amazing and oooo. Oooo said the owl, and Gine just reaches for the owl, all too giddy and happy at life.

In the meantime, Merra giggles and gently holds her child still, as she replies to Twilight, "Thank you, but I did come prepared." She pats a bag that she had set down earlier. To Staren she laughs and sighs, "Well, I had to see for myself this world of talking ponies. It's so friendly here."

If nobody is paying attention, that mountain of sandwhiches drops by about a third on account of Raditz's appetite, his mouth still stuffed with them, before he gulps it down, and sits back. "Well, Saiyan history is kind of a... uh... History thing..." He scratches the back of his head, "A lot of what I know about our homeworld I learned from my mother, at least so far as I remember. Saiyan families weren't exactly... Close."

Staren has posed:
Staren looks at Owlowliscious with a hint of a smile, but somehow it doesn't feel like the time to indulge in the usual joke. He wonders if the owl is smart enough to understand and care about the joke, anyway. Staren stops briefly to give Gine a curious look as he passes the couple. "Another half-breed, huh..." he flicks his ears and tail in thought, then moves on. He telekinetically pours a few cups of punch, offering two to Raditz and Merra and setting a third on the floor near one of the beanbags. He lays down on it, rather than sitting up, and smiles to Merra. "It /is/ quite friendly. That's what led us to this discussion, actually..." And then he TKs his cup to himself to sip while he listens to Raditz.

Twilight Sparkle has posed:
"Oh. I'm sorry to hear that." Twilight says when Raditz says his family wasn't close. She doesn't seem to mind that the pile of sandwiches is disappearing. That is what she made it for, after all. Then, Merra speaks up, making Twilight smile. "We are trying to keep it friendly here despite all the influences from outside of Equestria. And, hopefully, to help other worlds gain our level of peace." she says to Merra.

Owlowiscious tilts his head when Gine reaches toward him, then flaps his wings and lands on Merra's shoulder. He looks at Merra, then down at Gine. "Who?" If Owlowiscious is smart enough to understand the game, he is apparently also smart enough to not give away that he knows.

Raditz has posed:
The pile of sandwhiches just sort of gradually becomes less and less, as Raditz shakes his head, "Eh, don't worry about it. It's just kind of what happened. My parents seemed closer to each other than most Saiyans and their mates, which was apparently kind of rare." He scratches his head a touch. "Regardless of that, Saiyans have always been fighters for the most part. Granted, some took on more support roles like my Mother. She helped keep the Saiyans fed, which as you know is pretty awesome."

"Hooooo..." Is the response from Gine to Owlowiscious. She doesn't understand words, so that really doesn't count as first word as much as a sound immitation, as she follows it up by babbling!"

Raditz watches briefly, before clearing his throat, "Anyway... Yeah, we fought. Even before the Planet Trade Organization, Saiyans back then just fought each other, and whoever happened to show up. But Mostly each other. The only reason the Saiyans worked for the PTO is because it gave us a chance to fight other someone else." He pauses before grinning slightly, "It was fun." Before his smile fades away again.

Staren has posed:
Staren sets down his cup, swallows, listens. Takes a deep breath. "Why did you fight? Was it to gain something? To protect something? Or are you... do you truly value fighting itself?" He wonders.

Twilight Sparkle has posed:
"Or," Twilight says, "...was combat ingrained in you? Is it simply a compulsion that just seems natural for your species?" She wants to know why they fight, just like Staren does.

Owlowiscious smiles when Gine hoos back. How does a bird smile, you ask? Well, he smiles with his eyes, mostly. Even if his beak doesn't form a smile, his smile is obvious in his eyes. "Hooo?" the owl says back, then spreads a wing out before looking at Gine again.

Staren flashes a brief look of 'So we were thinking the same thing' to Twilight. The word he had been about to say before he stopped himself was 'programmed'. He looks back to Raditz.

Raditz has posed:
"Hoooo!" A few more giggles from Gine, before Merra takes this moment to pull the child into her lap, and tells Owlowiscious, "Gine, that's who." After which, she glances over at Raditz, watching his expressions.

Raditz listens to the questions from Twilight and Staren, and doesn't even change his expression, simply responding, "I didn't stutter, guys. We fought because it was fun. We went to other planets to fight people, because it was fun. We let them have an advantage in the fight, for fun. We destroyed -worlds-. And we had fun doing it."

Staren has posed:
Staren hmms. "Interesting." He tries to remember the explanation he gave Cameron earlier, of the nature of 'fun'. "I see. Fun is... fairly complex, but I suppose you're not really interested in breaking down why it was fun. Perhaps it doesn't really matter."

Twilight Sparkle has posed:
Twilight's ears lie back when Raditz clarifies what he meant. "So...you did it...simply because it was fun..." she says, almost disbelieving the statement. "There was no reason...beyond fun..." Twilight seems deflated by this revelation. She sinks down into her bean bag and sighs. "If there are races that would destroy worlds...simply because it is fun..."

Owlowiscious looks over at Twilight, then flies over to land in front of her. "Hooo.." he says sympathetically, then noses at Twilight, who reaches up to rub at Owlowiscious's head with her hoof.

Raditz has posed:
Raditz himself goes quiet for a few moments, before saying in a solemn, "Staren, it took me a very, -very- long time to be 'saved', that was an almost fifty, or sixty year process, and about twenty of those years were spent dead, in hell, for trying to kill my brother and wipe out Earth, and I only even succeeded in the first part. I should not be alive right now. I still enjoy fighting, but at least now I've given myself a purpose."

Raditz sits back and sighs, "If anyone was the nice Saiyan, it would be my brother, Kakarot... Goku. I'm just doing what I can to make up for the things I've done... I don't even know who I was trying to kid with that news announcement. Nobody's going to turn against the PTO. It's just a giant bluff that everyone is probably calling."

Staren has posed:
Twilight looks over as Staren speaks up. She smiles lightly at Staren's determination, then nods. Then, Raditz speaks up again and Twilight sighs softly. "But...it is possible. To change even a saiyan. The problem is...can we change an entire world? We can reach individuals, I have no doubt, but I was hoping for a way to make large amounts of people see that fighting to kill is not a good solution." she says. She is quiet a few moments before she speaks again. "I think your announcement was a good thing, Raditz. But, you have to stick to it. We have to keep them from doing whatever they want with other people's worlds. Like Yunomi's."

Twilight Sparkle has posed:
Staren takes another deep breath. "Fifty or sixty years, huh? I guess we'll have to learn how to play the long game if we're gonna be immortal." He stands up and stretches. "Hey. Don't sound so hopeless. Maybe it'll take another fifty or sixty years. Maybe it'll take a hundred or more. But... a way can be found, right?" He stares into space for a moment, having finally found what Raditz was talking about. He whistles. "Wow, the Union's officially been called in? Then we can do this. The might of a superfaction... well... I'm not saying it's a magical cure-all, but it's an army of doctors way bigger than any PTO!" Staren blinks. "Mixed my metaphors there. At any rate... even if the Confederacy backs the PTO and drags things out... the Saiyans being on /this/ side will give them a chance to be more than a villain's pets. They'll be heroes. That's what you set out to accomplish, right?" He raises a hoof in a mirror of a palm-up hand gesture.

And then he hangs his head slightly. "Yunomi..." He collapses back onto the bean bag, eyes closed. Then sighs.

Staren all cheerful, and then the wind goes completely out of his sails at the mention of Yunomi. It's rather dramatic.

Raditz has posed:
Raditz grumbles and shakes his head, "Frieza was pretty thorough when he destroyed our homeworld. One shot, and every saiyan on Planet Vegeta was gone, and only a handful of survivors happened to be off planet at the time. You're not gonna find more from my universe, and the variant worlds are gonna be hit and miss. For all we know, nobody was even listening to my message."

He grumbles, "I'm not gonna bother telling you the rest of our history in detail. Planet Vegeta wasn't even really our true homeworld. We just moved in a few hundred years before, and after a while we decided to take over. The natives, the Tuffles... Well, you can guess what happened to them... As you can tell, Friendship isn't magic over where I'm from."

Raditz goes quiet and stands up, "We should go. Sorry that the history lecture wasn't what you expected to hear. Thanks for the food." With that, he nods to Merra, "Come on..." With that, he walks out without really waiting on his wife, perhaps more upset than he's letting on.

Merra nod to Raditz and stands up, "Thank you for having us, Twilight Sparkle. It was really nice to meet you both." Gine just sort of yawns sleepily in Merra's arms, as the woman says, "Raditz really is a better man than he thinks... Take care." With that, she turns and follows Raditz out.

The platter of sandwiches, in the mean time, is empty.

Staren has posed:
Staren's not sure how to reply, and then they're leaving. He looks up long enough to say, "Nice to meet you too..." to Merra. He downs the rest of his punch, then brings the cups to the kitchen. "I... suddenly feel very tired. I think I'll... turn in for the night. Goodnight, Twilight." He heads up to the spare bed.
