Synopsis: | Harry and Inga meet Bertram and discuss wizarding and maging |
Cast of Characters: | 206, Inga, 826 |
- Harry Dresden (206) has posed:
It is a very muggy, awful day out in Chicago. And that's why it is a 'not going out until after dark' sorta afternoon in the cool dark basement Dresden/Frejyersdottir Residence. There's the smell of crepes and coffee in the house, and Harry Dresden has at least ventured forth to pick up a copy of the Tribune and snag some day-old donuts from the corner coffee shop to suppliment what is undoubtedly healthier options from Inga's skillet.
"Cooking channel? Really? Were you out with Riva? I didn't picture her as a cooking channel sort of girl."
- Bertram Silent (826) has posed:
When Bertram comes, he comes dressed in his lumberjack's clothes. Solid cotton pants, denim-ish, and cotton shirt, along with a pair of aldgoat leather boots and a belt of the same leather. He's also carrying a big metal milk jug, though by the fact that it's steaming it's probably fairly hot. He lets Dresden know he's here through a private radio ping, and waits at the door.
- Inga has posed:
Inga is standing a the stove, stirring the cooked blueberries for the crepes in a saucepan. She's dressed in nothing but her undertunic, which is still considerably more than most people would be wearing on a hot, muggy day like this one. It's made of a light linen, sleeves tied up, but its still ankle length. Her feet are bare though, helping her to stay cool. "I saw it while I was at Kotone's. Sometimes we get together and watch the television and eat snacks," she explains. "It looked easy and I had these blueberries I picked so..." Inga shrugs lightly, flipping the crepe. Nearly done.
- Harry Dresden (206) has posed:
For his part, the Wizard is in sweatpants and a grubby looking Cubs T-Shirt, looking lanky and gigantic as usual. "Well, I suppose that's okay. And I'm happy to see the blueberries have come in. Did you move a patch out to the forest or did those just sorta come with theproperty? I guess I never properly looked around at the local fruits and stuff."
He siiiiips at the coffee while poking at the comic section of the Trib.
- Bertram Silent (826) has posed:
Once inside, Bertram drops the bug metal milk jug next to the table. "I brought coffee." Apparently he brought lots and lots of coffee, that's a big jug and it looks pretty much filled to the brim. "So what kinds of ghosts are you dealing with, Dresden? Anything I can help with?"
- Inga has posed:
Inga nods. "There was some out there. I don't know if it is native, but someone brought some if not," she answers.
Inga loops up then, blinking. "Someone is at the door," she says, then flips the crepe off the pan and moves over to open the door. "Ah, hello! Come on in. The crepes will be done in a moment," she says, standing aside for Bertram to enter. Inga goes back to finish making crepes, stuffing one with blueberries. She'll give their guest the first one, of course.
"Oh, and thank you for bringing coffee. How kind," she says.
Hostess mode engaged.
- Harry Dresden (206) has posed:
Bertram gets a smile and a salute from Harry as he shuffles up to his feet to give the Eorzean a handshake. "Well, we'll see actually. Have a seat, Inga's got breakfast. And it's... uh."
He shuffles the paper around and slides a manilla folder over to the other side of the table. "Dumb ones who can't figure out they're dead. I've got a freind here in town, and ectomancer, who comes to me with help sometimes. This one's got mojo. Former local hegde caster."
The dossier is of a middle aged guy who looks pretty average save for the rather outlandish looking robes he's wearing. "Name was Sam Hopwell. I don't think he was originally from Chicago."
- Inga has posed:
Ings sets down coffee and crepes for all, then gratefully has a seat. "Mojo," she says, shaking her head. "It is a bit of trouble, but I think we could deal with it. Harry does not think my proposed method is well advised however," Inga says. It probably involves blood somehow.
- Bertram Silent (826) has posed:
"So we need to break it to him that he's dead?" Bertram sits down and looks around for a cup, once he finds one, or is handed one, he dips it into the jug he's brought with him, filling it up with coffee that way. "Well if you need help, I don't mind giving it a try. I haven't forgotten what you've done for the Twelveswood, miss Freyasdottir."
- Harry Dresden (206) has posed:
Harry grumps over at Inga, but does take the crepes, and blueberries, and piles them high. "Well, Inga's done a lot of good in a lot of places. But yeah, sometimes I... uh." He grumps and sips coffee. "I'd rather light him on fire and be done with it, but that's hard to do with ghosts, you know?"
- Inga has posed:
Inga smiles to Bertram. "Anytime my services might be of aid you are welcome to call on me if the gods have not already done so first," she says, then takes a sip of her coffee.
She looks to Harry, the corner of her mouth quirking upward slightly. "The method I know of banishing this ghost would require a sacrifice to be sent. Or, I suppose, I could try to raise a more powerful spirit...but I suppose you see where that might not be the best option. I shall have to think on it more. Hmmm...perhaps and iron nail..." she trails off, thoughtful.
- Bertram Silent (826) has posed:
"I appreciate it." Bertram smiles as he sips his coffee, and thinks about the challenge of ghosts. "I admit I'm not much of an exorcist, the restless dead I'm used to being forced to deal with are rather more corporal, but I'll do what I can."
- Harry Dresden (206) has posed:
The Wizard chuckles. "And the problem is calling up the dead, like binding them to this plane, is forboten for Wizards here. That sorta stuff corrupts a person. Not kosher." Harry shuts up as he shoves pancake and blueberries in his face. Om nom.
- Inga has posed:
Inga grumbles. Oh the White Counsel and their rules. "Never 'corrupted' me."
Inga sighs, the takes a bit of her crepes. "Oh, this is delicious," she says, pleased with herself. "I will work on it as well. If we can lure and trap the spirit I may be able to dispatch it. Perhaps if we could find out where his remains are? I can remember a story I heard once that you can use an iron nail and a hammer to dispatch a spirit. Blessed, obviously."
- Bertram Silent (826) has posed:
Bertram tries a crepe, and seems to want to say something, changes his mind and just says, "It's nice, thank you." He moves a hand through his beard, leaning back to think. "I may be a conjurer, but I try to avoid calling upon anything but the elements. Though you strike me as more of a thaumaturge, mister Dresden."
- Harry Dresden (206) has posed:
The Wizard points a fork at Bertram. "If that means 'light shit on fire, yeah I do that from time to time. I mean, I much prefer not having to do that, you know." A cursory glance around the room with any sort of magical senses, however, will detect and number of weapon foci and heavy hitting wards in the house.
- Inga has posed:
Inga grins, nudging Harry. "But he's so /good/ at lighting things on fire!" she says with a laugh.
Back to Betram, she frowns slightly. "I'm afraid I do not know what those words mean."
- Bertram Silent (826) has posed:
"Conjury and Thaumaturgy are two paths of magic in Eorzea. Conjury calls upon the everpresent elements of earth, wind and water, and uses them to support and heal our fellows. I'm a conjurer." Bertram starts to explain, "Thaumaturgy calls forth the fleeting elements of fire, ice and lightning. It's a potent discipline, it can do a lot to destroy and slay, but it's far less gentle." He pauses, then adds, "They do 'light shit on fire' to use your words, Dresden."
- Inga has posed:
Inga nods. "Ah, I see. Do some people walk more than one path? I do not know what you would call me. I can do a bit of fire and lighting, healing with blood magic, protection...and I am a Seer," she explains. If that helps at all. "Likewise, Harry doesn't /only/ light things on fire. We are flexible," she adds.
- Harry Dresden (206) has posed:
Harry grumps around a mouthfull of crepe. Mmgggnnggff-swallow. "Around here 'thaumaturgy' refers to a lot of different ritualized magical spells. You take a little bit of something or someone and use it to effect the rest of them. A bunch of people I've run into have used that in the past to do awful things to people. I mostly use it for tracking and divinations."
- Bertram Silent (826) has posed:
"Yes, but it's hard, and generally it's not feasible to use more than one at once. It's especially unlikely one masters more than one." Bertram finishes his crepe and gets another. "I know a bit of thaumaturgy and arcanimacha, more arcanimacha than thaumaturgy, but I'm really only a conjurer. I'm learning a form of conjury that until recently I thought to be lost. White Magic." He takes a sip of coffee, "I wonder if Black Magic is still around in some form, too. Probably not, but I can't be sure."
- Inga has posed:
Inga nods. "Different worlds," she says, lifting her coffee. "I've heard many people use the term black magic to refer to magic they think is bad...but I am still quite fuzzy on where those lines are drawn. I was taught that magic is magic. It is the intent that matters," she says with a shrug.
- Harry Dresden (206) has posed:
Harry slugs a mouthful of coffee, before pointing a fork at Inga. "You know why I don't indulge in the forbiddn magics here, but yeah, even if the intent is good, some of those things corrupt. Make it easier to justify doing it in the future. Like rewriting people's memories or turning them into toads and stuff."
He looks at Bertram. "And I get where you're stuff comes from too. Different worlds and all that. I don't have a big giant crystal guiding my hnd here." A sly grin. "Did Inga tell you she had a run in with uh... Hyadelin?" he mangles the pronunciation, but gets as close as he can.
- Bertram Silent (826) has posed:
"The stories of why Black Magic is a lost are aren't any better than the ones about White Magic. Apparently you can conjure some truly dangerous stuff if you want to." Bertram sounds really serious about this. "The Voidsent do not belong in Hydaelyn, and I've no reason to believe Black Magic is inherently bad. No more than White Magic, at least." Then, he smiles. "She didn't need to tell me."
- Harry Dresden (206) has posed:
A look at Bertram, nad Hary ponders the last thought. "And I'm guessing your crystal told you she's a fellow Chosen type person for her world, yeah?" A little chuckle, and Harry nudges hs partner in the side with a friendy poke.
As for summoning things, though, Harry grumbles. "We've had... we've had people call up some nasty things here too in the past few years. You call em Voidsent. We call them 'Outsiders'. Like, Outside where we're supposed to be."
- Bertram Silent (826) has posed:
"From the Void." Bertram says calmly, like it sounds familiar. Too familiar. "Anyway. Let's not dwell on unpleasant topics, not while we enjoy these lovely crepes." He sounds like he may have a few suggestions to make them even more lovely that he's biting back. "So, ghosts. What can you tell me about them?"
- Harry Dresden (206) has posed:
Harry leans back in his chair as Inga shuffles off into the basement lab, and looks to Bertram. "Well, Mr. Hopwell was, like I said, a hedge mage. Not powerful enough to get into the White Council, but he sorta provided services to the local magically inclined as a... finder of curious things." Harry sips on his coffee, letting that one settle in.
- Bertram Silent (826) has posed:
"Sometimes I find curious things. Some of the curious things I find I'd rather not have found. What kind of curious things are we talking about?" Bertram dances verbally a little but not much, getting to the point, "Did one of his curious things kill him?"
- Harry Dresden (206) has posed:
"That's what I think yeah. I mean, it's likely, he had a lot of weird crap in his shop that I really would rather not know how he found, but... well, he was my supplier for a few of hte less, uh. Illegal things." He grumps. "It's awful hard to come by shaved depleted uranium, you know."
- Bertram Silent (826) has posed:
"Pray forgive my ignorance, but what do you need that for?" Bertram asks, raising an eyebrow, before going. "Have you gone through his collection of curiousities."
- Harry Dresden (206) has posed:
Harry scratches his head. "Uh, shaved cold iron and shaved DU in a powder turn into a very effective anti-fae substance. Works pretty good on ghosts too, if you need to force them to remain corporeal." He wobbles a hand. "It's a conceptual thing, you know? Cold iron represents man's early mastery over nature and the uranium is one of his defining current masteris over the atom, so..."
He grumps though at the second question. "Well, that's the other part. He got himself killed a fw months back and his business got shut down when the police investigated it. New owner moved in and now he's complaining about the ghost."
- Bertram Silent (826) has posed:
Bertram suddenly has a pen and paper, and he's writing things down. "That would complicate things. So uh, how do you deal with getting rid of ghosts?" He takes a sip of coffee, "As I said, I'm used to my restless dead being more corporeal."
- Harry Dresden (206) has posed:
"Uh,depends on the kind of ghost, really." He gets up from the table, shuffles over to one of the bookcases, and starts poking through. "You'e got your regular spooks, you've got haunts, you've got poltergeists, you've got wriths and revenants, you've got murderghosts..."
He pulls out a heavily dogeared copy of Tobin's Spirit Guide, and hands it over to Bertram. "Here, this is one of things I use to sorta... get a handle on stuff. When I cna' I try to help them cross over, when I can't, I force the issue. Mtaphysically."
- Bertram Silent (826) has posed:
Bertram looks at the book, opens it and starts going through, but he squints a few times. "I must needs admit that I'm having difficulty reading this. Some of the letters look familiar, but overall it looks quite strange and unfamiliar." He frowns, "I fear this doesn't help much, but I'll help you if you have any way I can."
- Harry Dresden (206) has posed:
"Oh right, other languages Uh." Harry takes the book, and grins. "Well thing is I'm rubbish at the, you know, spiritual side of things. My method if that is usually invading their personal space and being a jerk and sometimes that's not the ight method, so... I'll bring you out next time we do something."
- Bertram Silent (826) has posed:
"Sure." Bertram finishes his coffee and gets out of his chair. "I fear I must away. I've got a few things I promised to do that I shouldn't delay any longer."
