Gaige rubbed her hands together with excitement, a big grin on her face. If it worked, well... if this worked, this would be awesome. It better work. She tapped on the console for a few moments, before the call began to route. And route. And route. And...
After a minute, it started ringing. She perked up, a grin on her face. Then it answered.
"Hello?" the voice said. Gaige stared at the screen, a hand moving up to her mouth. She couldn't believe it. She couldn't. She felt tears well up in her eyes. She hadn't heard his voice since, well... since everything. She then ran the program as she had been directed. And once she was sure no one was listening in, she responded.
"Daddy?" she said softly.
There was silence from the other side. Then... "Gaige? Honey?"
"Hey, daddy!" she said, trying to keep her tone cheerful. "I got a friend to help me set this connection up. Don't worry, it's secure. No one can get to it, we're safe. I just--"
"Honey, are you okay? Where are you? No, don't tell me that, are you okay?"
"I'm fine, daddy. I'm on Pandora now. Safe and secure. And... I made some friends, you've been reading my blog, right?"
"Every day. Up to 33,000 followers. I saw your run of the bullymog nest. Very impressive. Are you eating okay?"
"Like, yeah. Of course I am! I'm in this place called Sanctuary, fighting the good fight, and--"
"Do they have cocoa there?"
"Daddy..."
"Do they?"
"... A little. But it's not as good as yours. But I've made a bunch of new friends! And I made my way through the portals and I just--" There was a beep from the phone and she sighed. "Daddy, I gotta go. This connection... well, I'll call you again later, okay? But I won't go this long again, I promise."
"I understand. And Gaige, honey?"
"Yeah, daddy?"
"I love you."
There was a long pause from the girl. Followed by a nod. "I... I love you too, daddy." Then the connection broke. She stared at the screen for a few moments, a hand reaching up to her eyes to cover them as the tears fell down. She shook in place, giving a weak, soft sob before leaning forward.
After a few minutes she got to her feet and wiped her eyes off on a rag, a grin forming on her face. "Right! No need to spend all day moping!" Her shotgun formed in her hand. "Let's go hunting! WOO!" Before she ran out the door.
