Date of Scene: | 09 February 2015 |
Location: | Njorun Station - Deployment |
Synopsis: | Three technical types of different sorts have a chat. |
Cast of Characters: | 279, 359, Corona Arclite |
- Corona Arclite has posed:
It's probably not a surprise that eventually a machinist would manage to gravitate towards were a lot of the Union's heavy mechanical work was done. Most of the surprise was to Corona upon seeing the sheer magnitude spanning out before her.
"Iffen I didn't know better I'd swear I'd gone to engineer heaven," the vixen drawled out in an awed tone. Tail flicked side to side to keep her balance as she leaned almost dangerously over the railing of the observation platform watching all the work going on before her.
A rather large hammer with an odd portal shape inset to the head sits leaning against the railing next to her. As if all the metal details and the goggles hanging around her neck weren't indicator enough of her own mechanical profession.
- Elasaid Hood (359) has posed:
It's with no surprise at all that Elasaid's made her way to the hangars again. Stepping off a shuttle as it lands, the rather short scotswoman adjusts her kilt, then hoists a satchel that clanks resonantly over one shoulder, before stooping to pick up another equally large sack that also clangs. "Thank ye kindly, laddie! I'll give ye a shout if I need a lift back." she calls to the pilot, before walking off towards one of the access lifts, clanking and chiming all the way.
She spares a quick glance upwards at the foxgirl. "Oi! Ye dunnae wanna fall from there, ye'll hurt yeself."
- Maxine Sandberg (279) has posed:
Maxine meanwhile is finishing some programming on one of the work on one of the mechas, "That should take care of any errors present." That was a bit frustrating. The unfamiliar fox engineer catches her attention, "Yes, you should be careful around here." She nods in agreement with the fellow redhead. "Good evening, how is everything going?"
- Corona Arclite has posed:
It's the clanking and clunking that gets Corona's attention, ears angling forward curiously. Though the muffling aspect of the bags' material and that she doesn't really know yet what sort of metals these people may use make it difficult for even her sharp hearing to tell just what the contents may be.
Then both her and another lady actually speak up. "Oh, don't worry 'bout me. I'm up on high walls all the time." Though she does stop leaning over the railing so far as to be dangerous. "... Though my excitement did get a bit better of me," she admits afterwards. Then the foxgirl's attention refocuses on the lady with the sacks. "So what ya got in the bags there miss?"
- Elasaid Hood (359) has posed:
Elasaid blinks, then looks at her bags. "Swords, few warhammers, some platemail breastplates, there's a kite shield in t'other bag, some helmets... I'm headin' te th'outfitters at the roots, 'e runs a LARPin' group an' asked me te make some gear fer his Warrior an' Paladin."
- Maxine Sandberg (279) has posed:
"That sounds rather heavy." Maxine can't really picture herself in non powwer armor. "I'm Maxine Sandberg." She figures she should introduce herself before she forgets. "So do you repair mecha then?" She's kind of curious what the foxgirl would be doing up on high walls.
- Corona Arclite has posed:
Corona Arclite lets that rattle through her head. Weapons are an old familiar thing, even when you come from a region that's as often toting sideirons as they are a blade or some sort of bludgeon. People are more likely to fasten metal plates to what they already wear or under their jackets than wear full suits of it, but the concept of armor is still there.
Then Elasaid mentions that she -made- them, and those ears go right up in interest again. "A smithy? Well don't that beat all. Know my way 'round a forge myself." A gloved hand grabs her hat to doff in it a brief but polite half-bow. "Name's Corona Arclite... Nah, I run the walls to keep the depot's defenses up and runnin'. Turrets, gear-crossbow mounts, that sorta thing. Smith the parts to fix em with, too."
She grabs her hammer and lifts it to rest on her shoulder, but then her expression scrunchs a bit in confusion. ".. What's a laarrrp?", her drawl draws it out like saying the word for the first time and listening to how weird it sounds.
- Elasaid Hood (359) has posed:
Elasaid chuckles good-naturedly. "Elasaid Moira Hood, ye can call me Ellie. An' aye, I'm a smith. Me dad's a much better'n than I am, but I'm gettin' there!" she glances over to Maxine. "Tis 'eavy lass, but a good strong back an' legs make it seem lighter." she hefts the sack in her offhand idly. "LARP, it's an acronym, means Live Action Role Play... s'kinda like a game, ye dress up in costumes an' stuff. S'fun, if ye have time te do it properly."
- Maxine Sandberg (279) has posed:
"That sounds like a lot of work, it must be nice to be that strong." Maxine's not known for her physical strength. "I don't really have the free time for something like that." She's rather busy. "It's a pleasure to meet you both. That sounds rather steampunk." She can't help but to note Corona's description not to mention the way she's dressed.
- Corona Arclite has posed:
Corona Arclite puts her hat back on and adjusts the brass trimmed brim between two fingers. Then tosses her head back with a chortle at the explaination. "Haha!! So like the yokels that show up thinkin' to tame the frontier they just gotta dress up in a buncha leather and flannel and ride a horse 'round!.. Well 'cept the greenhorns think they're actually doin' it, not play actin'."
The foxgirl hops over the railing, grabbing a verticle pipe with her free hand on bracing her boots against it to slide down to the lower level with the other ladies. "That's what the rep guy said too." The loud clunk her reinforced boots make as they hit the deck makes up for not having spurs on them to jangle. "Don't rely just on steam these days, but the description does fit rather well."
- Elasaid Hood (359) has posed:
Elasaid looks Corona up and down a bit, now they're on the same level. "I guess so? Most LARPers do it te relax, unwind after a hard work week. Dad supplies the Glasgow Faire wi' weapons an' armour fer the rennaissance festival." she explains. "Steampunk? Maybe we can swap notes on smithy techniques sometime? I'm always lookin' to expand my horizons."
- Maxine Sandberg (279) has posed:
"I suppose it wouldn't hurt to familiarize myself with other power sources. I might have to do repairwork on someone powered by steam sometime after all." Maxine knows there's steam-powered AI out there. "So you're from a high-technology Western world then, Corona?" It sounds like it from what she's said so far.
- Corona Arclite has posed:
"And I gotta learn what I'm gonna be working with 'round here, so that's a right dandy idea." Corona shifts to the side slightly, letting the hammer lower to the ground so she can lean on it instead, cupping hands over the base of the handle. "That's one way of puttin' it. Years 'go Brimsteel was a lot more industrialized. But a chain of freak seismic activity shattered much of that infrastructure, and people returned to the ways of the frontier in order to survive. The advent of the Pulsarium Rush and the mega-trains capable of survivin' transit in the volcanic badlands are only recent. Things are only really startin' to get back on track." The vixen snickered softly. "Pun intended."
- Maxine Sandberg (279) has posed:
"Earthquakes and volcanos. Were they caused by tectonic activity or something else?" Maxine notes that Corona said they were unexpected. Maybe there was some kind of accident? "Well, I'm sure I don't know a lot about your technology but is there anything I can do to help?" It sounds like they might be able to use her help.
- Elasaid Hood (359) has posed:
Elasaid is about to say something, when her phone starts ringing. It's a songtone you can use on new smartphones. She sets the sack down, pulls out some slender doohicky from her sporan and clicks the answer button. "Aye? Aye, I'm on me way no-- aye, I know ye waitin' I'll be down in a mi--" click. sigh. "Me client's gettin' restless, best get goin'. See ye lassies around."
Thusly, she puts her phone away, picks up the sack, and trundles off, clanking away to the access lift.
- Corona Arclite has posed:
Corona Arclite shrugs her shoulders a little. "Could of been either. Once they discovered it also pushed a lot of the mineral resources closer to the surface, people didn't really care much how." Then turns a bit to wave after Elasaid. "We'll talk shop notes another time Ellie. Seeya 'round!" She makes a bit of a funny look at the sound the phone was making, but doesn't bother asking about it seeing as the lass was already in a hurry now. So just turns back to Maxine. "And just what is ya do?"
- Maxine Sandberg (279) has posed:
Maxine waves to Elasaid, "I understand how that is, hopefully we'll have a chance to talk again sometime." Her attention then turns back towards "I'm a roboticist but I do work on other machinery as well sometimes. Yes, I'm sure the mineral resources attract a lot of people. It might be a good idea to do research on what caused them to rise. That would likely be better suited for a geologist though." As smart as Maxine is, she can't do everything.
- Corona Arclite has posed:
Corona Arclite bobs her head a bit as she listens. "So basically ya do the same thing but yer machines can think for themselves and stuff." Then shrugs her shoulders a little again. "Pro'ly is, but that's a bit outta my field. I just make the stuff into usable stuff. Doubt anyone's gonna complain about it bein' easier to get to, mines are dangerous nuff as it is."
- Maxine Sandberg (279) has posed:
"It sounds like some kind of automated excavator might be useful then." Maxine figures it's better than people being put in danger. "Well, I'm glad the minerals are easier to get to but if there's another earthquake or eruption..." She frowns as she says that. "It would be helpful to know so it could be detected in advance."
- Corona Arclite has posed:
"Like I said, it ain't a bad idea. Yer just talking to the wrong gal." Corona stands back up and pick up her hammer, resting it on her shoulder like before. "But I'll mention it to the administration when I get back home.
- Maxine Sandberg (279) has posed:
Maxine nods at that, "Well, do you make any kind of vehicular defenses or mounted weapons?" She figures the excavators might need those too and it would be a way for to help. "Would I stick out on your world?" That's about the politest way she can think of putting it.
- Corona Arclite has posed:
Corona Arclite puts her other hand to her chin thoughtfully. "Not too often, but that don't mean it can't be arranged for. Most people just worry 'bout being able to get 'way from danger. Or to it. Not fightin' from it. That's what ya have someone riding shotgun for." The foxgirl stopped a moment, blinking a few times. Then as the implication dawned on her, laughed instead. "Oh, ya mean because yer a human? Oh shucks, we got those too, don't ya worry none."
- Maxine Sandberg (279) has posed:
"Yes, that's one way of putting it. I mean humans are pretty common in the Multiverse but I know there are places without them." Maxine figures it would be best to ask first. "Well, I'm not exactly the combat type myself, but I do understand the need to defend yourself." She knows words can only go so far. "Plus, you mentioned mutant wildlife."
- Corona Arclite has posed:
"Mutant, alien, same difference. Critters needed to adapt to survive too, but it made some of em outright nasty now. Plus ya got the typical badits, claim jumpers, rival outfits willing to resort to violence. The typical. Besides," Corona yanks the sawed-off from where its tucked in her belt, flips it around, grabs it by the action and lets the moment lever it for her, then flips it over again to catch it properly. And pointed harmelssly straight up. And never actually took the saftey off, either. "Sometimes yer best defense is makin' sure the magma-sucker can't attack first." Idly she flips the sawed-off again to stuff it back into its sling.
- Maxine Sandberg (279) has posed:
"Yes, I don't think I would survive long on my own in a place like that. Thankfully, where I live is relatively peaceful. Though, I'm sure you learn fast about survival there when growing up." Maxine notes that Corona's world sounds rather hostile. She doesn't seemed too phased by her drawing of the shotgun, certain the foxgirl knows how to correctly use it.
- Corona Arclite has posed:
"Yup, pretty much. A good ol' wompin' ain't always the best answers, but sometimes it's the only solution ya got." Then Corona smirks a bit once the gun is safely stowed away. Holds up her hammer. "Of course, I always got this too. Just as useful for fending off a punk or two as it is hammerin' metal into shape."
- Maxine Sandberg (279) has posed:
Maxine nods in agreement, "I usually leave the fighting to others. I'm much more comfortable being a scientist." That and other people tend to be better then her at it. "It sounds like you don't have problem with that though. I suppose if I grew up where you're from, I wouldn't be too heistant." She can't blame her for being the way she is.
- Corona Arclite has posed:
"We are what we gotta be. Nuttin' wrong with that. As long as yer using it right, that is." Corona returned the hammer to its usual resting place on her shoulder. Might be one of the reasons the shoulders of her vest has reinforced coverings, come to think of it. "Ain't much one for 'research' as it were. Engineers don't do the sciencin'. We just make usin' it practical."
- Maxine Sandberg (279) has posed:
Maxine nods at that, "So you deal with maintence and upgrading mostly then. There's nothing wrong with that, someone has to keep machines working and up to date. When it comes to survival you usually stick with what works and being state of the art isn't so important." She can certainly understand where Corona's coming from.
- Corona Arclite has posed:
"But I wouldn't have much to work with it you folks weren't comin' up with new things! Survivin' comes with strength, and strength in numbers counts. Or something. I ain't really the philisophicatin' sort either." Corona snickers after that, then shifts her attention elsewhere. "I really oughta find where to bunk down for the night."
- Maxine Sandberg (279) has posed:
"Well, there are beds in the deployment center which you came through on the way here. I sleep there once in a while, if I'm too tired to make it home." Maxine informs her, "Speaking of which, it's getting late. I should go check on Annie and get some sleep myself. I've got work tomorrow. It was pleasure talking with you Corona. Maybe we can work together on something sometime." It sounds like she's about ready to head out herself.
- Corona Arclite has posed:
Corona Arclite laughs at that as she turns back towards the exit. "And they use to tell me I was crazy for sleepin' in the workshop. Awright then, seeya 'round Maxi."
