The apartment was large, luxuriously so, and well-appointed to boot. Too large, Fate thought. Times like this, all she could do was lay here, listening to the faint clicking of the clock across the room, watching the shifting patterns the fading sunlight made, filtered through the curtains behind her.

<Fate...>

The blonde absently reached over, brushing her fingers through her famili ar's warm pelt in a touch that was meant to be reassuring. She doubted Arf was fo oled at all, but the wolf knew when it was best not to press a matter. She knew w hat the linked beast wanted... and she wasn't willing to provide it. She couldn't rest, not now. Not with the flashing yellow of Bardiche telling her that somethi ng was happening. Something intense, strong enough that it could be another Jewel Seed.

"Let's go, Arf," she murmured softly, rolling off the sofa. She surpresse d the wince that followed, feeling pain flash through her shoulder, arm, and back again. The abraisions were already almost healed, but they still stung. That did n't stop her from staggering to her feet, though, nor did it stop the flare of he r cape splaying out and her Barrier Jacket coalescing about her.

She had a task to perform. Five of the Seeds were delivered now, but sixt een remained to be sealed and delivered. Five had not been enough... had not even been enough to earn a reward. More were needed. Until she had them all, the apar tment would stay empty but for her and her familiar. She couldn't afford distract ions.

Distractions like that blue-eyed mage girl.

Fate closed her eyes, remembering the trust and hurt in the other child's eyes. She hadn't lied... she really was sorry that she had been forced to attack the girl. Her intentions seemed so honest, so earnest... so pure. But that is ex actly what made her dangerous. She knew now that girl would never give up her own quest for the Seeds. If that made them rivals, enemies... so be it.

Without even realizing it, Fate lifted her hand to her eyes, rubbing away a trickle of tears that had snuck out when she wasn't paying attention. No... no crying. The lash marks on her back, over her shoulders and arms, hadn't brought tears to her eyes. Neither should this. She needed to be strong. Especially now. This is what she'd been trained to do from the start.

"Let's go," the soft-spoken blonde repeated. "Mother is waiting."
