When Steve Rogers was picked to be the first test subject of an experimental procedure, he didn't expect to become the world's first superhero - but as Captain America, he became a symbol and an inspiration to many, even after he seemingly sacrificed his life to stop HYDRA from destroying New York. Miraculously surviving in suspended animation, he awoke in the modern day thanks to S.H.I.E.L.D. finding him, and returned to activity under their guidance. He still doesn't tend to call himself a superhero, but he accepts his status as a symbol of American ideals, doing his best to embody and protect them no matter what happens; above all else, he counts himself as a protector of those weaker than himself, willing to lay down his life for their sake if need be.
