When Steve Rogers was picked to be the first test subject of an experimental procedure, he didn't expect to become the world's first superhero - but as Captain America, he became a symbol and an inspiration to many, even after he seemingly sacrificed his life to stop HYDRA from destroying New York. Miraculously surviving in suspended animation, he awoke in the modern day thanks to S.H.I.E.L.D. finding him, and returned to activity under their guidance. He still doesn't tend to call himself a superhero, but he accepts his status as a symbol of American ideals, doing his best to embody and protect them no matter what happens; above all else, he counts himself as a protector of those weaker than himself, willing to lay down his life for their sake if need be.

Living Symbol: Captain America is very much a symbol of America and its ideals, and Steve Rogers knows it, for better and for worse. His heroic identity was designed to inspire patriotism during a war, and even though World War II is long over, the symbol remains. On the one hand, this makes Rogers a target of professed enemies of America and what it stands for, but he accepts that as a soldier: better that he be attacked than random innocents. On the other hand, it potentially associates him with versions of America that have abandoned the principles which it once represented - and he doesn't take that nearly as well; should the situation arise, he will be compelled to take action if he can.

Ideals Worth Defending: Rogers believes very strongly in the American dream and the principles on which his nation was founded, and will not compromise on matters of democracy, liberty, or equality. While he balances the right to self-expression against the exigencies of a military organization, he won't let anyone's beliefs be trampled out of hand. And above all else, he will protect innocents, no matter what it may cost him personally.

Irreplaceable Equipment: So far as Rogers knows, his shield is made from the only vibranium ever found on Earth, making it impossible to replace if it gets lost or destroyed. Fortunately, it's proven indestructible so far - he's used it to block bullets, energy blasts, explosions, even a swing from Mjolnir (and Thor wasn't holding back at the time). Rogers is perfectly willing to keep using his shield as needed, but he's not going to discard it or allow it to be stolen unless there's a truly compelling need - and while he's perfectly willing to throw it in combat, he's never going to leave it in enemy hands for any longer than he absolutely has to. (OOC Note - if Steve is without his shield for longer than two rounds, his Endurance will be reduced by one point until he regains it; this penalty takes effect without delay if he's without his shield at the start of combat. Additionally, if a hostile has possession of his shield, Rogers will target that opponent if at all possible to prevent them from escaping with it.)
