Synopsis: | Eryl goes to Mirkwood to make up for failing to stop Odin. Offering GARDEN to replace the felled trees, he somehow ended up giving Thranduil lessons on how to use his radio, as well as encouraging him to do so. |
Cast of Characters: | Eryl Fairfax, 592 |
- Eryl Fairfax has posed:
It had taken Eryl a little bit of time to convince ReGenesis that trying to make up his failure to stop Odin to the elves was not 'a needless waste of resources.' But, when you create someone to be an incredible diplomat, you should not be surprised when they use that skill on you to make them see your point of view.
To be specific, Eryl had said that it would be a good way of building relations with someone who had a lot of what ReGenesis lacked: plants. If they can get seeds and saplings from the elves, that frees up the synthesizers for other things.
Thus, Eryl finds himself in the Throne of Thranduil, having declared his intent to make reparations. He enters slowly, arms raises, palms showing, and a small smile on his face. He begins to speak, in a clear, steady tone.
"Great King Thranduil, I thank you for seeing me. I come here today, both as a representative of ReGenesis and as an individual, to apologize for failing to stop Odin when he attacked. As a result, he went unpunished for his actions, and in my attempts to stop him, more trees were felled." He stops before the throne and bows deeply, hands by his sides.
- Thranduil (592) has posed:
Thranduil rises to his feet from his throne when Eryl is escorted through the kingdom. "There were several others that fought this Odin and did nothing to stop him. I imagine that our world was simply not deemed important enough to protect. The trees that were felled are corrupted and sick. The only purpose they serve is to keep outsiders from entering the forest from all sides. I am not certain what I can do for you, but I suppose I can try."
- Eryl Fairfax has posed:
Eryl considers Thranduil's words for a moment. So he believes that the Union deliberately withheld forces? Quite a negative view of things, perhaps he can help correct that. "I can assure you, the Union does not think that way. I was on the radio during the fight; there was simply no answer from anyone else. People must have had the radio off, or were not able to provide assistance. We do not think of worlds in terms of more or less important." Well, they /shouldn't/ at any rate.
"But, as for the trees, I am here to offer something that might help with their sickness. I am simply reaching into my coat now to retrieve it, do not consider it a malicious act." He reaches into his coat and pulls out a small, folded case, offering it up to Thranduil. Should the elf king open it, he would find eight syringes, each containing a dense, sludge green liquid.
- Thranduil (592) has posed:
Thranduil takes the case in his delicate looking hands, looking inside. He removes one of the syringes, never having seen one before. "I am unfamiliar with these particular potions. How are they going to remedy what has been plaguing this forest for centuries? The sickness comes from the evil in Dol Guldur. It is the most hateful kind of dark magic imaginable. It comes from the Necromancer himself. We Elves do not do well in the presence of the Undead, I am afraid, so we keep our distance."
- Eryl Fairfax has posed:
Eryl beams, and begins to explain. "That, King Thranduil, is called GARDEN. It was developed by ReGenesis to make the soil on my home world capable of supporting life. By injecting it into the soil, it begins to propagate, filling it with nutrients and other chemicals, promoting the rapid growth of healthy plants. I must confess, I am not sure if it would be effective against this corruption, but it would allow for swifter replacement of the trees felled by Odin and myself."
He bows once more. "I am sorry to hear of these other issues you are having though. If it turns out that GARDEN is effective against it, please, do not hesitate to get in touch with me or ReGenesis to arrange the sale of more."
- Thranduil (592) has posed:
"Sale...that would imply that we would have something worthy of trade." He closes the case and hands it back to Eryl. "What is it you are after, then? Jewels? Gold? Mithril? Weapons? Our kingdom is quite wealthy, but we are not to be extorted." Thranduil is so suspicious of everyone and everything. "I would not know how to contact you or your world."
- Eryl Fairfax has posed:
Eryl stops the case with his hand, pushing it back. "Please, these are a gift. If you accept these and have no further contact with ReGenesis, that is perfectly fine. As for the issue of trade, ReGenesis is interested in none of those things. What we would like, however... are seeds, saplings, anything a plant could bloom from. Looking around, I am sure you could spare plenty of that. We would not even demand them in bulk."
He puts on his best winning smile, one that shows no hint of deceit or ulterior motive. "As for getting in touch, radio channel 22.2 is dedicated to getting in touch with ReGenesis. If you do not have a radio, I can have one sent to you."
- Thranduil (592) has posed:
Thranduil lifts a brow, then sets the case aside to fold his hands in front of him. "There are healthy trees outside our gates. They have been kept safe from the oncoming shadow, but barely. You may sample them if you wish as long as no harm comes to them. I have a radio, but know not how it is used. I hear voices coming from it, on occasion."
- Eryl Fairfax has posed:
Eryl beams and bows once more. "You are far too kind, King Thranduil. But, as mentioned, this is a gift. I would not sample from these trees unless you place an order with ReGenesis. It is only fair, after all." He stands up straight and rubs his chin when Thranduil mentions that he cannot work his radio. "Then please, let me show you how. I am only reaching for my radio now."
He takes his own radio from a coat pocket and starts giving Thranduil a quick demo of how to speak into it and how to tune into different channels.
- Thranduil (592) has posed:
Thranduil seems to maintain a calm demeanor which keeps his guards calm. "I see. We do not have such things as electricity here. I know not what sort of power makes the radio device work. If it can run on magic, I am certain we can have Radagast come and inspect it so long as he does not manage to burn down the entire kingdom." Thranduil watches as Eryl operates the radio. "This can be used to communicate with others across great distances?"
- Eryl Fairfax has posed:
"From what I understand, these radios run on some kind of a long-life battery. You likely would not have to worry about powering it for a long time," Eryl explains with a smile. "And when it runs out, you could likely simply order a new, charged battery to replace it, rather than fuss around with wiring this whole place with electricity."
He quickly nods, pleased that Thranduil is catching on so quickly. "That is correct! If they have a radio, and are tuned into the same channels as you, you can speak with them. There is also a phone function, which allows you to speak one-on-one with someone else."
- Thranduil (592) has posed:
A slightly puzzled expression briefly crosses Thranduil's face. "I am unfamiliar with the terms battery and phone. We are but simple Silvan Elves, afterall." He folds his hands behind his back. "Perhaps I will attempt to use this radio...but perhaps it would be wise to wait until assistance is needed. That way there will be no necessary contact."
- Eryl Fairfax has posed:
Eryl smiles and begins to explain. "A battery is a device that can store electricity and use it to power devices. These radios run on such things. A phone is another device that allows for communication across distances. But unlike a radio, which allows multiple people to stay in touch, a phone allows for one-on-one conversations."
When Tranduil mentions that he might just use the radio when he needs assistance, Eryl pauses for a moment. "Uh, King Thranduil? This is just my personal opinion, but you should not hide from the Multiverse until you need assistance from it." He carries on, eyes coming alive with an inner light. "There are so many fascinating things out there, and one way to learn about them is by talking with others. You can tell them about Mirkwood, they can tell you about their own worlds. Your horizons will become broader; you will make friends and allies. Simply staying silent until help is required might make you come across as... well, snobbish. Arrogant even."
- Thranduil (592) has posed:
"Outsiders have come here and caused little more than trouble for our people. They killed many, injured more. One was even so bold as to take my son Legolas hostage. It is nearly impossible to tell who is able to be trusted and who is simply playing nice. Speaking and drawing undue attention to Mirkwood will only bring more danger and unwanted visitors. I am not certain how communicating with outsiders will help."
- Eryl Fairfax has posed:
Eryl takes a deep breath and begins so speak, swiftly but clearly. "Well, to be frank your majesty. That is something everyone has to put up with. We can never know what is occurring in someone else's head. But, I find the best way to go through life is to assume the best in people. I understand that you have reason to distrust the Union. Rest assured, those involved in the upsetting first contact you had with us were heavily reprimanded."
"Besides! If you use the radio, and talk to people, you can at least make reasonable assumptions about who can and cannot be trusted based on the information given. Otherwise, you have no prior experience in dealing with anyone, so you go in utterly blind. Better the devil you know over the one you don't, hm?"
- Thranduil (592) has posed:
Thranduil listens and nods once. "There is merit to your logic. I suppose one truly cannot know whether or not who can be trusted until it is often too late. We are aware that you are at war with another army called the Confederacy. We too are on the brink of war with the forces of the Necromancer." Thranduil can't look uncertain in front of his subjects, so he straightens his shoulders, looking down at Eryl regally. "We will make use of the radio device."
- Eryl Fairfax has posed:
Eryl claps his hands, smiling broadly. "Glad to hear it! However, I too have issues to deal with on my home world. Civilisation must be brought back. So I really must be going. I do hope you find the GARDEN useful." Eryl gives another deep bow.
"It was a great pleasure speaking with you, King Thranduil, and I hope I have the opportunity to do so in the future. I will not use up any more of your time. Fare well." With that, unless he is stopped, Eryl turns and starts to leave, nodding to the guards and royal staff on his way out.
- Thranduil (592) has posed:
The Elvenking offers a bow of his head, and the guards flank Eryl to escort him safely out of the kingdom. As he returns to his throne, Thranduil picks up the case again and decides to take a look inside. "Have our scholars inspect these items and report back due haste. I shall attempt to speak on this radio device and see what comes from it."
