Manehattan Murder Most Foul!
Date of Scene: 21 June 2014
Location: Divided Equestria
Synopsis: The Multiverse's keenest minds are called by House Moon and Star to discretely look into the killings of a squad of royal guard.
Cast of Characters: Maya, 39, Staren, 150, 264, 470

Pinkie (470) has posed:
Manehattan. A city on a knife's edge. While on the outside to all appearances the metropolitan island sprawl is a pristine jungle of skyscrapers and clean streets, the fact is far from the fiction. Its populace is almost fictional certainly; a melting pot mix of races, both humanoid and equine, unicorns, pegasi, earth breed, even a smattering of griffon or chimerae here and there, and the occasional Changeling is probably spat on when spotted.
It would seem there's been a string of murders, and the local authorities, representatives of a group called House Moon and Star have called out for aid in investigations while their governing house handles attempts at diplomacy beyond.
The crimescene is a seemingly abandoned warehouse, and its cordoned off by police lines and a slew of officers and HUGE, armored looking knight-like ponies in golden barding. Royal guard from the looks of it. All it takes is a flash of credentials and a non-disclosure agreement to let this leak out to the locals however and investigators will be allowed to have a look.
The scene is a blood bath. Preserved by local unicorn law enforcement magic to keep it from aging, while investigations are pending. There are at least eight more of those armored figures insude, though several in their humanoid forms, the fact of the matter is, they are all dead. Very dead. Dead as doornails and left in crumpled heaps of armor and sticky blood.

Hayate Yagami (150) has posed:
"-ead, Naom..." Hayate trails off as her coattails settle down into the slightly higher gravity of Manehattan and the wind of displaced air die away. She sighs once the glowing circles and polygons of the transportation glyph fade, "That girl needs to calm her trigger finger, if she's a mind to." For heavens' sakes, there wasn't time to straighten her uniform yet.
Hayate does so now, reaching up to push her tie knot snugly against her collar and giving herself time to look around. There was supposed to be a warehouse, with police guarding it. And the police should look like the pictures in the files, but all she could see was most of an empty lot and what looks like a series of abandoned, distinctly not-warehouse-like buildings in front and to either side of her. Did Naomi get her coordinates wrong? That girl...
This is the way that Hayate Yagami of the Time-Space Administration Bureau arrived on Manehattan: facing the wrong way and worried by personnel problems.

Eliot Ness (264) has posed:
'You should go out into the Multiverse more, Mister Ness.'

An off-hand comment from Kiyoko Saito from a couple weeks back. Perhaps the girl had been right about that. The Multiverse's residents had paid him no small amount of kindness with their aid, so he should see about where he could pitch in, in return.

And that was why Eliot Ness had decided to actually journey outside of his own world for the first time when a mission within his skillset actually came up: Murder investigation.

And so, wearing his hat and long coat, along with gloves and a suit, Eliot Ness stepped out of a warp gate not too far from the crime scene and made his way towards the officers guarding around the outside of it. He waved his Syndicate pass a couple times, "Eliot Ness. US Federal Agent. I'm here to investigate a murder."

Jinx (39) has posed:
There's another addition in the warehouse, likely an unwelcome one, but an addition nonetheless. An entirely 'unarmed' Jinx of Zaun, sitting on a crate outside of the actual area of investigation, calmly eating an apple and staring at the guards.
A lack of handcuff means she's not in custody, but... she is staring at the cops with more than a little malevolence. Still. She'd made semi-quick friends with one of the lovely natives here, so... she's here to 'assisst'.

Maya has posed:
Maya had got the call about a string of muders? She's had some skills which might be useful and some experiance in such,. Though at the very lest her experiance having to go through dungeons might give her some effort. She takes a moment to look about at the dead and is keeping back she does have some magic and she ponders for a moment.

"My name is Maya and I'm with the Union, I am here to answer the call for aid in this."

She takes note of Eliot Ness and she looks for a moment. She'd heard of him via the news and several union reports. She also takes note of Hayate's arrival as well.

Staren has posed:
Okay. After sleeping on that somewhat unsettling experience, Staren can step back a bit. It was shocking to hear, sure, and it's /possible/ that Fallen Twilight was just like Twilight until Things Happened... but that doesn't really sound like her. She might have been a much worse person to begin with. It's not really fair, at this point, to be more worried about her than about the people she's hurt. Yes, Twilight herself offered friendship to Discord, early on... but he rejected it, and in the end she didn't hesitate to turn him back to stone. She later reassured him that it was okay, that sometimes you couldn't really try to save the villain.

He just never imagined Twilight's advice might apply to... Twilight.

The investigation seems like an excellent chance to learn more about Equestria. He doesn't need to hide from authorities and he can openly ask questions since he's not from here! It's pefectr.

Staren steps out of the warpgate just after Eliot Ness, it so happens, and follows the detective-looking-man to the site. When Eliot starts badge flashing, Staren's eyes widen in a 'huh, that's a good idea!' look, and he reaches into his bag and pulls out a badge to stick to his coat -- The shield shape screams 'police badge', although one might wonder what the proudly engraved letters 'LDF' stand for. He offers a stern nod to the guards and pinches his coat next to the badge to draw attention to it.

Never mind that Staren is a pilot and not a detective -- /they/ don't have to know that.

And then he sees the astounding number of dead bodies. "Geeze... Did one person do all this??"

Pinkie (470) has posed:
Badges are flashed, teleportations are made, and the COPS are eyeing Jinx. But with the investigation team's arrival, the squad at the entry scuff hooves nervously, and wring hands in cases where they have them. But the officer in charge steps up when Ness flashes his pass. He's a massive Earth Pony man, made of muscle on muscle and in a heavy brown trenchcoat. "We normally don't like looking out of house for this. But all my boys are stumped and -our- feds are breathing down our necks about it." He grunts motioning for the extremely disapproving knightly guards. "Name's Gum Shoe, I'm in charge here. And if you guys are as pro as I keep hearing you offworlders are then this might blow over a little easier. But it's hard to keep ten of Moon and Star's best men getting offed without so much as getting a chance to fight back."
He motions for the bloodbath beyond before pausing. "You lookin' for somethin' over in all those empty lots, toots?" Called to Hayate before he looks to Staren. "We donno. Our guess is you'd need a whole serious hitsquad to pull something like this, these guys were hardcore."
Without further ado he tugs up the police tape and jerks an elbow into the warehouse for any who want to look in.
It's a mess. The victims are all a mix of pegasi, unicorns, and earth breed, and their heavy armor is in pristine condition aside from being covered in the blood and dust of a fight. Windows are shattered and there's glass everywhere, but it looks like the warehouse wasn't being used to store anything at the time of the incident, it's empty save for the bodies.

Hayate Yagami (150) has posed:
Talking! Calling! People walking past after coming out of warp gates! Hayate turns around slowly, in a I-meant-to-do-that sort of way, and faces the expected warehouse with the expected amount of sangfroid expected of experienced investigators and officers.
Then she promptly loses her sangfroid and claps her hand to her mouth. This would be a really bad time to paint her breakfast all over the streets, she thought to herself, then added that she should not have had black pudding during breakfast. Not at all.
Gum Shoe receives a silent, ash-faced nod from Hayate before she focuses her attention on absolutely everything and anything other than the bodies. A quiet text message back up to the Wolfram instructs some poor middie to go wake Shamal - but there is no hurry. There's no hurry for any of them anymore. No, bad Hayate, stop thinking about those and... and... hey, glass.
Hayate crouches down near a window and carefully peers at the glass, because it's not a body. Is it blasted in? Blasted out? Shattered? Broken? Bloodstained? If only she wasn't blocking her own view with her hand, this would be easier...

Maya has posed:
Maya looks to the police offiers and nods for a moment as shelooks at Gume Show and she tilts her head a bit. "We'll do what we can, it could be a single killer. I know of people with the ability to do this, it could be someone non native to your world."

She looks about trying to take things in she's looking over the body no signs of direct killing? Magic? Posion? Maya mutters for a moment before pulling a card out of her pocket she couses and a blue fire like energy leaches out of it and into her hand and starts to focus on the spell she's weaving trying to suss out the body and see if there's anything like a toxin or a curse within thier system.

Eliot Ness (264) has posed:
After giving polite nods to all present, Ness continues to carry the calm professionalism of one law enforcement agent talking to another as he nods to Gum Shoe, "I'm not here to step on anyone's case or get under..." He pauses from saying foot. Instead he simply says, "Get in the way." He's still getting used to cross-species relations.

"I'll let them check out the inside," Ness states, pulling out the most old-fashioned detective's tool a good man can have: A small notepad and a pen. He pulls the cap off the pen and then taps the tip of it to his paper.

"First question: Do you have a time of death?" He asks, taking this real slow because he figures the answers are gonna be pretty long. Fancy off-world forensics means he won't be as useful inside examining bodies as he will be outside asking questions.

Jinx (39) has posed:
Jinx just watches the cops roll in and be coppy, head in her hands, kicking her legs a bit.
One of the pony-guards shuffles closer, carrying a night stick and keeping an eye on the girl. Okay, totally in custody. "Boy, look at all this fine police work, top notch, cleaning up after the fact." Glum? From Jinx? Her sarcasm is broken, it would seem.

Staren has posed:
Staren nods to Gum Shoe and looks inside. That's a lot of carnage. The completely undamaged armor sticks out, though. He's no detective, but he /is/ able to record the scene for later perusal. He sends out a few fly-sized drones (tiny helicopters with cameras) to fly around the room so the reconstruction won't be limited to the angles Staren saw from. Staren considers how to try and investigate this... Well, the weirdest thing is manner of death. Completely undamaged armor? If only he had the medical training to work out how they died... wait.

Staren turns to Gum Shoe, and after he's finished Answering Eliot's question, he asks: "Second question: Do you have a /cause/ of death? Their armor's undamaged... are there even any signs of a struggle?"

Pinkie (470) has posed:
"'Ey you got something you wanna say?" Gum Shoe snipes back at Jinx for her spite. In face he seems to eye her harder, but lets one of his boys trot over to keep a better eye on her. Because she's just plain suspicious.
But the detective's attention is back to Ness, arms folding across his chest. He does, in fact, have feet being in his humanoid form but the rest of the locals are varied so it's a weird case for terminology. Not that it's important, because he can tell he's clearly working with a professional right now, so he gives Ness what he can. "Our phorensics unicorns put it sometime around three or four PM yesterday. We've kept the scene pristine since then." Though he does look back to Staren, "Cause of death's on the bodies, not the armor, kid. Get a closer look."
For the record, only one window has glass that was blown inwards, the rest are all pocked and cracked with what look like bullet holes, but Hayate would probably be able to recognize that the scorch marchs dotting the walls are magical in nature- which might make sense with the fact that several of those among the dead are unicorns.
Staren and Maya, up closer don't need fancy technology or spells to see the causes of death. The armor is pristine, it's the bodies that are bloody, the worst of it shows that the men were bled out from gaps in the joints of their armor, but a clear stab wound on one body's neck. Another was bleeding excessively, indicating a fapid flurry of horrifyingly precise blows of the same weapon through the joint where a pegasus' wings come free of the armor. It looks to be a double edged blade with a diamond cross-section, making for wounds that close and heal poorly. Assuming there's survival. But there's no sign of poisons nor toxins
There isn't in this case.
There is one body that sticks out a little more than the others. A unicorn-man in armor more ornate than the others. The squad leader perhaps, propped up with his back against a pillar.

Hayate Yagami (150) has posed:
Hayate takes her hand off of her mouth long enough to tug free a handkerchief, put it in her hand, and press it back onto her mouth. Gloves or no, protection is important for this sort of thing. At least a little color's returned to her cheeks.
Wordlessly, she stands up again and turns to go back out of the warehouse, heading out the same door that everyone went in. She gives Gumshoe another hopefully encouraging nod on the way past and then heads for the outside of the blown-in window. There should be tracks, right? Perhaps on the rooftop...

Jinx (39) has posed:
Jinx spits right back at Gum Shoe. "I didn't even have a fuckin' thing to do with this! This is crap, you can't just hold me like this! Wheres your probable cause? What's the charge? I want to see my attorney! You'll hear from my lawyers! They're guns and very loud!"

Staren has posed:
Staren blinks at Gum Shoe, then shrugs and walks over. While he's not as squeamish as Hayate, it's still disturbing.

He tries to focus on the idea that bodies are meat machines and that this is no different from examining damaged robots. It makes him feel a little better, but it hardly puts him at ease. His eyes widen when he notices the pattern. "This many precise stabs, /never/ scratching the armor?? Who could /do/ that!?"

Eventually, the one suit of different armor grabs his attention. As he stands and walks towards it, he stops, briefly, and pulls out what looks like a clear-screened flipphone with a crystal embedded in the base, and scans the room for magic. If there isn't anything screaming out for his attention, he pockets it and pulls out a pair of black gloves with circular crystals on the back of the hands, pulling them over his hands and kneeling to gently touch a clean part of the squad leader's corpse. The gloves are enchanted to pick up on psychic impressions, but it's not a very strong enchantment yet so it tends to only pick up vague results. Although it seems like half the time he uses it, he instead discovers something's psychically scrubbed the area. Sigh. Still, maybe he'll get something useful.

Eliot Ness (264) has posed:
"Three to four PM?" Ness stops, letting Staren ask his question while the man calmly writes down notes on his pad. He looks around towards the area surrounding the warehouse. Hazel eyes flit across a few buildings, "Well then my next question. Simply put, did you have any witnesses to the crime?"

"Mid-afternoon seems like a rough time to bump off a buncha people," He conjectures, "Warehouse like this isn't in much disrepair. Seems like you'd have a lot of workers comin' and goin'." He posits to the man, "Why that time of day, this place'd be hittin' on all sixes. Midshift settled into work. Dayshift gettin' ready to leave. Nightshift bein' here in a couple hours."

He flits his eyes over to Jinx, "Which means it was a quiet affair. Which means you should probably let the dame go, since she don't strike me as the quiet typ. More of a flapper."

Maya has posed:
Maya cancles her spell as she gets a closer look, this was done with knives. Or something along those lines, Maya's decent with a knife very skilled knife work too.

"Looks like it, I can think of some types of people who have this level of skill. No toxins eithere by the way this was pure knife work."

Maya goes to check out the seeming remains of the squad's leader.

"I'm thinking we're very likely looking an an elites handy work here..."

Pinkie (470) has posed:
Heading outside to the point of breakin, Hayate will find herself in a shadowy dead end alley, the dead end beind the wall of the warehouse. Thing is, there's no discernable means up from here; whoever got in either smashed through the window from the roof, flew, or is a ridiculously good climber. There's no sign of rope hanging from the top either and the alley SEEMS undisturbed. There's no signs of a group having been through here, like the officers surmized. Just trash and dust and a new mystery of entry, but the handprint on the wall higher up says that someone was here.
Gum Shoe makes something of a face. He's about to snap at Jinx again, but Ness stills him, leading to a gruff motion for his officer to 'unhand the broad' and a clear motion of his fingers pointing at his eyes and then back to the twintailed terror. But then he looks a little awkward. Tugging at his collar when asked about witnesses and where the shift crew were. "We got nothing." He says honestly, looking both flustered and upset. "I donno why these guys were even here, they're like spooks and when a load of 'em go dead without an answer..." He grumbles before hushing his voice. "Between you and me I think they were up to something here us grunts shouldn'ta known about, because shifts were running like normal just a few days back."
There are traces of magic present, in fact. Though only the faintest hints. Like the kind that would be completely gone by now if not for the time binding magic the forensics unicorns have on the crime zone. They're erractly placed... Splotches? It's hard to tell, really at this point but they're like splotches that seem the heaviest in the shadows. With the lights out as they are right now, even with the sunlight coming in through the windows, the warehouse is pretty dark. But the squad leader is in worse state than his men. His wounds are NOT the kind like the rest. Same weapon, but rather than going for a quick kill, his attacker pointedly -crippled- him and left him to bleed out slowly, stabs aimed for joints to hobble and... A calling card.
One long, vicious cut slashes his face wide open from ear to ear in a sloping parabola that widens his mouth considerably, cutting flesh and muscle cleanly and letting his jaw hang open in a death's rictus of an ear to ear grin. Those gloves will pick up the fleeting memories of an obviously intense and gripping fear. Something slim, fast, and dark.
It looks like with his last action he used his own blood to draw something in the floor beside him. A large, single, teardrop looking shape and the initials 'C M'.

Jinx (39) has posed:
The Loos Cannon hops off her crate and snorts a bit, shuffling over to grab a steampunk looking bracelet from one of the guardhorses. She carefully slips it back on, and calls up PopPow, letting the shoulder-slung Mini-gun rest comfortably against her back as she saunters back out of range of the cops. "Now, if you ask me, this is something... well. If it had been me, I would have let EVERYONE know about it. If you've got this sort of body count and no one claimin' it and no one wantin' you to know about it, that's a different sort of message."
She smiles over at Ness and grins. "Or a different brand of killer, really. I'd be looking for someone with a grudge or with cause to be pickin' fights with your secret Po-Leece."
She carefully tosses her braids up and out of the reach of the blood on the floor.

Hayate Yagami (150) has posed:
"Ah," Hayate takes one more glance around the alley out of habit before pushing gently off of the ground and floating carefully upwards towards the handprint. This is something she understands, definitely. Although a handprint that can be seen from down here... what could it be made in? Hopefully not dried blood.
As she closes, Hayate invokes the sensor routines and pulls out the (dumb) TSAB device of a scanner and camera. The handprint is thankfully not nearly as embarrassed under her examination and recording as, say, one of her subordinates. Good.
"Handprints... so nobody local, unless the handprint occured afterwards, of course. Or before. I wonder if there's a match in the database anywhere..."

Eliot Ness (264) has posed:
"Or." Ness points out to Jinx and Gum Show, "The killer didn't have a message to send at all." He conjectures.

He taps the tip of his pen against his pad, "My theory's that... the killer wasn't aiming to send a message. Wasn't aiming to be found at all."

One gloved finger wags around in thought, "You have the emptied out area. No workers. Group of people the detective says are basically ghosts. Commandos." He rubs a gloved hand under his chin.

"This is military. One of those shadowy missions. They came here to send someone a message, got a message sent to them instead, I think."

Staren has posed:
Staren winces when he realizes what happened to the leader. The psychic impressions don't really provide anything he wasn't expecting. He steps back and pockets his gloves, shaking off the feelings. Staren's been wondering, whether Fallen Twilight's guards are the good guys or the bad guys. But whoever did this to them... was not a good guy. Not that that means /they/ were.

He found a new clue though. So he returns to Gum Shoe. "That symbol... CM with a teardrop. What does it mean?"

Maya has posed:
Maya says "Any luck with IDing them? Then again if their operation wasn't normal you won't have the clerance to know which ... is a problem."

Maya hates the red tape of more developed nations than her home, seriously taxes were an alien thing to her people but that's another story.

"hummm wait there is some ... magic here it wasn't just knife play it seems."

Maya humms trying to get an idea but well and nodes to Jinx.

"That's a very good thought.

"Could just be targeting the military directly then?"

She pauses looking at Staren, they are going to need to see if they can match that symbol up with anything.

With another quick question: "How soon afterward did the forensic mages get here? And that symbol... CM with a teardrop. What does it mean?"

Pinkie (470) has posed:
There's quite the disconcerted look on Gum Shoe's face for a moment. Jinx's OBVIOUS criminal insight pulls his frown even deeper with thought as he runs a hand through his hair to try and clear out some nerves. "Question we can't figure out is -what- kind of op was going on. They're obvious House Sun and Moon, but I can't touch them, too way above my pay grade." He grunts to Ness in the way that says he knows someone will have his gun, his badge, and a knife in his back if he goes digging. Gum's clearly a good cop, but he's also a pretty spooked one. "Whatever they found here... I'm glad it's not here anymore."
The handprint outside it a flat one. That is to say... No fingerprints. No handprints. Though it looks like there's a weave throughout. However busted in was wearing gloves- fabric gloves, not leather or rubber.
To Staren though, Gum Shoe pauses. "Few hours, our teams got here the same night. Yeah. We saw that. We got a couple of guesses." He admits, using an elbow to tug his coat aside and jerk one thumb at the embroidered image of an unlaced and dressy shoe with gum stuck to the bottom, with a magnifying glass. "We think it might've been the last Cutie Mark he saw."

Staren has posed:
Staren glances back towars the warehouse, thinking, then looks back to Gum Shoe. "Well if they're spooks on a secret mission for House Moon and Star, why aren't /they/ doing an internal investigation with access to more of the facts, instead of calling you?"

Eliot Ness (264) has posed:
Ness lets out a heavy and tired sigh, tapping his pen against the pad, "Dead commandos, cordoned off area, law enforcement not brought in," He furrows his brow and then adjusts the sleeve of his jacket. His gloved hands finally come up to fix his tie.

"Wounds like those are less the weapon and more their wielder. Some trained a very long time to be able to do exactly what we've found here. You should all be very careful." He says this to Gum Shoe very specifically, "Please understand that people who dig too deeply into cases like these vanish. Wash up in rivers." It's not a threat. It comes across in the hard tone of a man who comes from a world with a very corrupt police force.

Hayate Yagami (150) has posed:
Hayate finishes scanning in the handprint and, a little disappointed, returns down to more earthly places. It wasn't a total loss. She's discovered a few things about the possible perpetrator.
The suspect is not very tall. Perhaps even her size.
The suspect entered in a human form, or at least one with hands.
The suspect is left-handed, since the knife would presumably already be in h-
Hayate stops, re-checks her thinking, and floats up near the window again. Only this time, she peeks over the edge just far enough to shout, "Ah, excuse me. Can you please confirm that the wounds are made by a left-handed wielder? Erm... I'm not good at looking... looking at those things."

Jinx (39) has posed:
Jinx isshort, has hands and is currently using her left hand to flip off a passing cop.
"Yeah man, even i try to keep away from scary spooks. Those dudes are like ninjas and ninjas are always bad news unless you're a pirate. I mean, especially if you're a pirate those guys hate each other."
She does turn to look at Ness though, and grins. "And no one wants to find dead horses in rivers. That's how people get like... cholera nad all those weird ass old times diseases. Bleah."
You're an awfully chill pig."

Maya has posed:
Maya thnks they got something very serious going on all things considered but as to what that's not entirely clear.

She looks to Eliot nodding catching his warning. It's one of caution to watch your back, from one police officer to another or so she's reading it. "Yes this is right htere's a lot of training here to pull off something like that.

Pinkie (470) has posed:
"It's because the real Moon and Star suits haven't shown up to 'take this out of my hands'," Gum Shoe mutters at Staren, before eyeing the knightly gaurds that are looming nearby giving him an evil look. But he tugs his coat back closed. "Believe me I'm not keen on being found face down in the Hoofson river."
As per the bodies, there are pierce wounds on both sides of the corpes, making it evident that the killer might have had a blade in both hands rather than just the left, if anyone wants to answer Hayate.
"Chances are they're busy stretched as it is with the King, Queen, and ArchMagister in town. Focusing more on protecting them, but they'll probably want ans-"
They will want answers it seems, as the armored knights split aside to reveal a black-coated pony in a dark suit. He's got on shades and an earpiece, and even has a set of shades as his Cutie Mark. Before he rises to two legs and abruptly takes on his human form then and there, to adjust his already perfect tie. "Secret Service, Moon and Star federal investigator. This investigation's now my investigation."
Looks like they'll be wanting those answers, considering the sigh Gum Shoe heaves.

Eliot Ness (264) has posed:
Ness hands Gum Shoe (but NOT Secret Service) a business card that gives his contact information in Chicago, "I'll be in touch for future investigation."

It's a simple greeting, and it forces the government agents to be at least somewhat beholden to local police to get Ness's information. He looks to Jinx and says simply, "I'm not a cop. I'm a federal agent." Is all the response she gets to her chill comment. And then he's turning and walking off in a predictably hardboiled manner.

Maya has posed:
Maya takes notes of what else the officer state his enjoyment of breathing, Maya meanwhile is taking a look and humms for a moment.

"Looks like it might have been dual weilding from the looks of it for what it's worth htis is just my experiance in dealing with weapon wounds I admit." She pauses at the suit entersd and she nods for a moment. She is going to be shuffling off after reporitng what she could to the team working on this then depart.

Staren has posed:
Staren nods slightly to Gum Shoe. And... sure enough, here's a Moon and Star pony now. Staren's eyes widen when he changes -- they can DO that?!

He'll stick around briefly in hopes of overhearing something that explains more about how Moon and Star operate, but he won't object when told to leave.

Pinkie (470) has posed:
They apparently can do that, yes. And with Secret Service on the scene he gives a 'get the buck out of here' jerk of his thumb at the investigation team.
"I need a drink." Gum Shoe laments.
