Profile
A young-girl orphaned in a war-torn empire from the early 20th century. Tanya Degurechaff has enlisted into the Imperial Army and has since made a name for herself both on the front lines and back in the capital. Despite her young age, she displays potent magical talent and a mind far sharper than her appearance suggests. Only extending generosity rarely, Tanya has a very complicated inner life, always working towards some unspoken goal. Tanya expects to be treated as an adult due to her accomplishments and despises being treated as a child. On the battlefield, she attacks swiftly by magically enhancing mundane weapons and bullets. She is often compared to a demon due to her intense wide-eyed smiles in battle. Contrasting this, she often recites prayers when entering combat. Tanya's merciless behavior in combat and ruthless adherence to protocol have given her a fierce reputation both inside the Empire as well as its enemies.
Advantages
Defining
Magic: Despite her age, Tanya displays Class A magical aptitude, which puts her in the top percentage of mages in her world. She can project a defensive shell for protection, create a 'hologram' decoy, dull pain, or trigger an adrenaline-fueled berserker state so she can ignore her natural fear and fight with peerless aggression. Higher grade magic requires activation of her Computation Jewel.
Type-95 Computation Jewel: A computation jewel that allows for high level spell-casting. The Type-95 utilizes four interlinked cores and amplifies all spells run through it, well in excess of what regular single-core Jewels can manage. The Type-95 has two modes of operation:
- Cruising Mode only uses a single core. Tanya's eyes glow their normal blue. In this mode she can fly and perform basic spells but cannot use the Jewel for any advanced spellcasting. No attack spells are available.
- Active Mode synchronizes the four cores. Tanya's eyes begin glowing gold. Her defensive shell becomes stronger. All attack spells become available, including explosive artillery spells, long range precision spells, enchanting blades to cut better, and Magical Diffusion. In order to activate the Type-95, Tanya must speak a prayer to God. This prayer can be interrupted to keep her in Cruising mode.
Significant
Past Memories: Tanya fully possesses the memories of her past life, which is the source of her abnormal maturity and knowledge for her age. She possesses a full life of experiences and education to fall back on, in addition to the strategic studies and combat experience she has gained since her reincarnation. This wellspring of knowledge combined with her young appearance makes her easy to underestimate, as she is surprisingly skilled in diplomacy, strategy, and combat.
Magical Diffusion: Tanya's ultimate spell. This single bullet contains magical energy under immense pressure. On contact with the atmosphere, it rapidly reaches critical mass in an explosion very similar to a fuel-air bomb. Even an indirect hit is dangerous due to the shockwave, heat, and the blast's rapid consumption of surrounding oxygen. It has a rather long ramp-up time while the spell is cast and so she typically saves it for large units of enemy soldiers or mages, vehicle formations, or structures.
Imperial Flight Unit: A device issued to Mages of the Empire to allow flight. Two pieces, this unit is a box of components affixed to Tanya's waist, connected to the thrust unit encasing her right foot. This device converts magic power into lift. When Tanya is in cruising mode, it has a flight ceiling of 6000 meters and a top speed of 300 kph. In Active mode, this ceiling triples to 18,000 meters and her maximum speed increases to over 400 kph.
Minor
Named Mage: Tanya has a reputation in her world of origin. In the Empire she is the war hero "White Silver", the youngest soldier to ever earn the Silver Wings Assault Badge. Her strategic successes and solid advice have given her some pull with the Imperial military leadership. To the enemies of the Empire, she is known as "The Devil of the Rhine" and has a reputation as a terrifyingly brutal soldier.
Equipment: Magic aside, Tanya's equipment is all mundane. She carries a Mauser 98 semi-automatic rifle, a Luger pistol, a standard bayonet, and usually a pair of grenades. Depending on the mission she might exchange the Mauser 98 for a Thompson submachine gun.
Featherweight: Even without a flight unit, Tanya is able to slow her falls with magic and safely drop from any height, much like a parachute. This trick doesn't require activation of the Type-95.
Disadvantages
Ruthless <Trouble>: Tanya has a severe lack of empathy for others. She doesn't care about others unless they can serve some purpose for her. Every action she takes and every decision she reaches are ultimately selfish in nature, though sometimes calculated to appear altruistic. She treats soldiers as expendable numbers and does not actually care for their lives. It only matters to her if their deaths would directly reflect poorly on her. In combat she is horrifically brutal and efficient. Her punishments for incompetence or insubordination are similarly merciless. Even members of her own country's top brass are uneasy about her.
Not-FunSized <Significant>: Being in full possession of memories from a previous adult life, Tanya absolutely hates being treated like a child. She also despises being thought of as "cute" or situations which she feels undermines her self-image. She can swallow her pride and put up with it for limited times if in the presence of allied officers or for public events, where she feels she has no other choice, but her disgust is typically more obvious than she realizes. Unless she has a very good reason to avoid doing so, this risks a violent response on anyone who tries to pat her head, muss her hair, or put her in a dress. As a note-- Tanya is known to "weaponize" her childish charm to trick or manipulate people. What really bothers her is when others treat her this way when she isn't playing that role.
By the Book <Significant>: Tanya is obsessed with rules, order, and efficiency. If there are regulations, she will do everything within her power to adhere to them. Tanya also expects this kind of adherence of any soldier assigned under her and does not hesitate to discipline when this is not the case, violently if she feels it's necessary. Additionally she will not openly object to orders by superior officers, though she might question them under the guise of requesting further details.
Trolled by God <Minor>: Tanya's life is regularly interfered with by a creature that calls itself God. She refers to it as Being X. Working typically from subtle angles, Being X manipulates the world around her in order to undermine her attempts to survive. It subtly creates situations that threaten her life, fosters rivalries, and may even grant power to people who pray to God in search of ways to defeat the Devil of the Rhine. Being X is also not above simply messing with Tanya to inconvenience and provoke her directly. The "miracle" it bestowed on the Type-95 is just one example of its sense of humor.
