This is an old iteration of the theme news file. It is presented here until a new iteration is written.

It began on an auspicious day. A world very much like our own - simple, yet complex in its own way.

And then it all changed. A building here manifested, a geographical feature there. A few individuals gained what seemed to be super powers; others simply had an effect on reality itself, their knowledge somehow manifesting. Soon, it began to grow out of control.

Reality itself rent and tore. Many were consumed by the effects. The survivors - most having these strange powers, and others gaining them - fled what was once their home, which seemed to now be part of a greater fabric of reality.

They were called the Founders.

Soon enough, other worlds were pulled in, merging with what was once the Earth. Some had only a few members of their worlds brought in; others brought their entire known world, including planets and even more. The expansion was rapid and terrifying, though as the dust settled, it became obvious that this new, strange, amalgamated world was the order of things now. And to the chagrin of the Founders, it seemed as though their dreams - and nightmares - had become a reality. Fictitious beings were now real. Strange powers came with them. Physics itself had changed. They could not go home - it was now rent, a wasteland of pure volatility, later to be known appropriately as the Volatile Wasteland. And so they joined with the new refugees that were once merely the creations of humanity, and began to build a society.

And as many before them had found, this was easier said than done.

As the new-found Multiverse expanded, growing by the day - and then by the hour - change had to be adapted to rapidly as more worlds fell into the "trap," none of which seemed to be able to leave. New governments emerged, as the old ones seemed unable to cope with the changes. These new formations, known as supernations, rose and fell. Although two of them seemed to be continually falling and rebuilding - perhaps a result of people getting too used to things, as it was found that time lost much of its meaning and old age was rarely an issue any longer.

The first of these, made of defenders, formed an alliance primarily to protect themselves from those who tried to take advantage of the situation. The second formed itself to try to strengthen itself against the first. The two were gridlocked for a long time. And then the second discovered something. Known as the warp gates, devices for instantaneous transport to other warp gates, using the power of the mind.

This group quickly reformed around this discovery, dubbing itself the "Warpgate Alliance." Unfortunately, being conquerors, they did what one would expect - tried to conquer. The others, forming the haphazardly called "Warpgateless Alliance," fought valiantly. The war was long and bloody. However, it was only a dangerous mission into the Volatile Wastes, the Earth from whence the entire Multiverse began, that managed to stop the rampaging of the Warpgate Alliance. The result changed the Multiverse forever - breaking much of the power of the warp gates, now some regions might not be able to reach others. In time, parts would become too far away to rejoin others easily, if at all. And the so-called Warpgateless Alliance now had the benefit of their own warp gates.

These two groups continued to clash periodically, sometimes going through periods of peace, sometimes heavy war. In the end, they evolved into what are known as the heroic Union, and the dangerous Confederacy.

That was over 400 years ago in Multiversal time. Since then, the true creators of the Multiverse, the Custodians, have made themselves known, combining worlds for some purpose as of yet not entirely known, though their chief wishes to use the power of the Multiverse for his own ends. New factions have arisen, very far from the original two, though those near the Volatile Wastes, occupying arguably the most important areas of the Multiverse, the Union and Confederacy remain locked in combat with one another. New worlds join with the Multiverse, or 'Unify,' regularly. And what of the Founders?

After much turmoil, they found a new place in either the Union or Confederacy, to help them create a new, concentrated branch of each supernation's military. To identify the strongest, smartest, and bravest, those with skill and luck incomprehensible. They were able to perceive the mysterious force known as Aura, which indicated who among each world were champions, and were so often the heroes and villains of various fiction from their original world.

And these characters are the player characters at this MUSH, aligned with either the Union, the Confederacy, or out on their own.
