Act 1
Ayumu Asami, a Puella Magi recruited by Kyubey to help with his research, first kidnaps her friend, Suzu Ume, and forces her transformation into the Mirror Witch by poisoning and starving her to force her magic to drain. After the Union interferes to save Suzu, she does the same to Rika Michiko, who turns into the Door Witch. As Union investigators close in on her, she grabs the last of her friends, Kaori Ren, and intends to turn alongside her to get rid of the interlopers. Oriko Mikuni and Kirika Kure are briefly recruited to help due to the former's prescience. In the final confrontation, Kaori turns into the Ink Witch, but Ayumu is disabled before she can turn by Sayuri, who immediatly cleanses her Soul Gem.
Following the Witch's defeat, Ayumu is shown the error of her ways and, after receiving her three friends' forgiveness and explaining Kyubey's ploys, is put under therapy and rehabilitation by the Union, with Setsuko Kaminagi as her mentor and superior.
The Union is left with the information that Kyubey is actively engineering the creation of Witches, but obviously hasn't found a way to gain anything from it yet.
